Stargate Worlds, an MMO that never launched, gets its own rogue server that you can play right now

If you cast your mind way, way back, you might recall the promising MMO project that was Stargate Worlds. Based on the hit sci-fi franchise from the ’90s and 2000s, Stargate Worlds was announced in 2006 and progressed all the way to the beta stage by 2008. Unfortunately, the collapse of studio Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment in 2010 meant the end of hopes for this MMO, even as it was nearing launch. [...]

Downloaded, logged in, the demo starts, no option to fire or punch, just stand there while the demo bad guy slowly drains your health, die, logout.

Others are saying the main game, as opposed to the demo, is more functional (although still eventually hitting functionality issues).

I should watch them again. It's been long enough that it'll almost feel new again. I also never finished Atlantis.

Yes, though I did manage to get it to work on Linux using Lutris.

Cool. Were you able to do anything like fire, punch etc?

Yes! I didn't do the demo that others have reported issues with but the main game "worked". I could do quests, level up, fight and defeat enemies and talk to a few NPCs. Though after just a few quests on the first world you go to I got stuck not being able to complete a quest, couldn't talk to the NPC Anat, not sure if that might just be the end of content. Otherwise a lot of the game systems are not implemented, for instance when you level up you get talent points that you can spend at your class trainer to unlock skills, but the skills don't have icons, can't be equipped or used, and just don't do anything.

Edit: I'll just strike that part because I did just find how to use the skills, though they do still seems quite half finished.

Hm... why make an old, unreleased game playable again instead of making a game from scratch? Wouldn't that be easier?

How would making an entire new game be easier than patching up an existing game?

If you have to reverse engineer everything, I imagine that's way harder than just writing it from scratch, no? I can't imagine they got the source code to the original game. If so, how? That would be interesting to know because there probably is copyright and it's supposedly a fan release.
