Fandom won’t allow adblockers

I disabled Brave shields to use this site and then my phone turned into an air fryer from all the bloatware it was loading. Temps went up like 20 DC.

The spite I have for fandom… is… so… intense

Numbers go brrrr

Also, don't use Brave.

Brendan Eich is both vocally and financially opposed to LGBT+ equality. The browser has actively enabled targeted ads. They've actively promoted crypto and have been in bed with specific crypto brokers to promote its use. They've been adding their own promo codes to URLs for private benefit.

They don't give a shit about privacy. Don't touch them with a barge pole.

I don't mean to make light of the bigotry, but the fact that that fuckwad inflicted JavaScript upon the world is reason enough to hate him and avoid his shit by itself. He has a proven track record of incompetence and terrible design decisions.

29

javascript is one of the best programming languages in the world. is was one of the first mainstream languages to adapt features such as coroutines, imports based on filename instead of classname/library name, etc.

it does a lot of things right. haters gonna complain about the 5% efficiency lost because it doesn't use static typing.

Brendan Eich

All of his crimes against humanity puts him in the same circle of hell as the Koch Bros and the Mercers.

If you don't like Firefox mobile is there another ad blocking mobile browser that you'd suggest?

3

Personally I use waterfox, it's what firefox was before the ai trash was shoved into it and what it should still be.

Are Firefox forks on the table? I use IronFox and like it for mobile use.

12

If you already have strong opinions about browsers, then I'm guessing this is unlikely, but if you have an iPhone, Orion is decent.

Cromite has a built in adblocker but it also allows you to install extensions.

I have Ublock Origin and Libredirect installed in Cromite on my phone.

Nah, Cromite doesn't allow extensions. Other than the built in ones, it doesn't do extensions. There was another Chromium android browser that could do extensions, Kiwi I think. But it was a smidge shady how it did its search queries so I'd avoid it.

And side note: Cromite's Fdroid repo link is shot. It's been down for me for month, and I tried disabling VPN or switching to other countries and i either get a timeout or not found error, similsr to this forum post. So like I'd have to keep downloadong apks to keep it up to date, and I'd rather just pray every website i use works on FF than do that.

Attached is a screenshot of Cromite browser's "chrome://extensions" page with extensions installed and running. Also shown in screenshot is the Ublock Origin applet pinned to Cromite's toolbar

1

Sheesh, you schooled me. I genuinely didn't think it had the option for them, especially since I tried to test it with libredirect's crx file. Is it because you have to enable developer mode in the chrome flags?

1

To use BreezeWiki, just replace "fandom.com" with "breezewiki.com", and you'll instantly be teleported to a better world

Neat!

Thanks didn’t know this existed

Also wasn’t expecting to see “lisp”**

One entry in the Testimonials section links to a satire website and people might not realize that.

Nice, although I'm slightly suss about the extension wanting access to my Google data.

this is extra funny because as anyone who's been to fandom without an ad blocker knows, the site is 80% aids

73

My eyes and brain felt like me being immunosuppressed by HIV and infected by 17 different bacteria everytime i went there without ad blocker. It is a fully accurate description

5

I've been there. I've watched the site enshittify right in front of my own eyes

13
lemmy.world

Firefox with Ublock Origin doesn't have this issue. (Or whatever Firefox derivative you prefer.) Please stop using Chromium-based browsers. Google is actively trying to kill adblocking. Stick with Gecko.

Fandom has become progressively more fucked and unusable over the years. Can’t remember the last time I visited that site, it’s been a long while, but I remember being more than mildly infuriated.

31

You can also add "anti" just in front of "fandom" in the URL, and all the nonsense get stripped out.

How to allow ads on school & corporate networks

Seems pretty fucking sketchy. "Please use these tricks to bypass your admin"

24

Well thats because brave is shit. Try a firefox fork like waterfox with ublock origin.

I just did and had 0 issues.

Agreed and upvoted but the browser is good. It works better than pretty much anything out there especially on android. Firefox for me is getting slower on desktop for some reason. Websites take a lot of time to load.

Have you tried Firefox on Android? You can actually have plugins. It's the only mobile browser I know of that supports that.

I haven't had your issue with Firefox getting slower though. I use Zen, but it's still Firefox and it seems fine. Maybe it's just the mainline branch getting slower? Could it be AI? Do you have it toggled off?

I tried literally everything (troubleshooting mode, uninstall all extensions, use the default state on a new profile, use the default state on a fresh install, use arkenfox user.js, etc) before installing brave origin. Even tried Librewolf. But seems like a Gecko issue for me. I was later told to diagnose what is slowing it down using the network tab but I had already switched by then and didn't want to troubleshoot anymore when Brave Origin works flawlessly for me.

Also on Android I don't need any plugins other than an ad-blocker which brave has built in. Only downside to Brave is that I have to turn off their Crypto bullshit. So yeah brave ticks all the boxes for me currently.

I didn't think I needed plugins on mobile until I had the option. I still don't have as many as desktop, but there are some incredibly useful ones. things like Indie Wiki Buddy, for avoiding Fandom, as an example.

2

My use-case for browsers is just searching stuff, opening a website, reading stuff—the basics. Even on desktop the only extensions I use other than ad-blockers are Bitwarden, Sponsor Block and Return YT dislikes.

1

Fandom is such a shitshow... I was part of a wikia based wiki for more than a decade and experienced the transition following the buyout rebrand to fandom/curse (it apparently wasn't a buyout, sure felt like one though).

The first thing they did was fire almost all the local staff and replace it by their people, then the enshittification began; they introduced a new discussion feed to replace the forum function (which was basically just lazy a Twitter clone). It was completely separate from the main wiki and pretty much killed off that side of the community. There were a lot of users that just used that without ever stepping a foot into the main wiki, which obviously isn't very helpful when the site relies on users to create and maintain articles.

They also trippled the amount of ads on the site and introduced a new layout that fucked up the old one we had meticulously created.

I left that place in 2017 and so did pretty much all of the users and admins I knew. Once one of the top ten German language wikis, it's pretty much abandoned now.

You should use the plugin Indie Wiki Buddy. It's better than the people saying "just use Breeze Wiki." It actively transfers you to the indie wiki option even when you select a Fandom link (if you have the option set). It also does a lot more than just Breeze Wiki. You can toggle certain wikis on or off and set their priorities. For example, some games won't have a Breeze Wiki page, but they will have some other Wiki, and this handles that without you having to think about it.

12

+1

Honestly this should ship with many browsers, be a default for search engines and such.

3

Ohh, look at that, another website disappears from the net. Need to start taking any site that does that shit and spread it out on nomadnet

10

there should be a libredirect extension that gives you a bit slower but open platform instead of crap like this.

also as every comment said before, dont use brave. try fennec or ironfox.

10

Tap or click the URL, change "fandom" to "antifandom"

Been doing that to skip the annoying kid/adult popup

6

I block and and all sites that demand I turn off adblockers. Like, they don’t even show up in searches.

UBlacklist FTMFW.

6

Wikia is actual cancer. Dont validiate their claim to a concept they have no right to.

4

I just browse Fandom pages using Internet Archive (or sometimes other archival sites except for Archive.Today and I won't be explaining why here)
Also Fandom has not been good in years there where controversies such as: that incident Mcdonalds paid turning the Grimace page into a ad,intrusive ads,not much protection against vandalism and so on...

3

Never had a problem getting on that shit site. It’s Safari ands Wipr2 on t my phone or it’s that or Firefox with uBlock Origin on the desktop.

These sites are fighting for the scraps while more and more people just ask the chatbot for the information.

3

I use the app Wikipanion to access fandom wilis on my phone

As someone who has used AdBlocker for as long as I can remember, I can't come up with a single reason why sites should allow it. Exact same thing with the YouTube controversy. Of course I don't like that they're trying to prevent me from blocking the ads but I sure don't blame them for it. Using an adblocker doesn't necessitate for me to come up with justifications for convincing myself that what I'm doing is actually moral because it's not. I'm perfectly capable of holding both of these two thoughts in my mind at the same time.

My test for whether behaviour is good or not is to consider what the world would be like if everyone did what I do and whether we'd all be better off for it. There one thing is for absolute certain: YouTube would not exist as a free platform. It would either not exist at all or it would be a subscription-based only.

You can have an ad-free service or you can have a free one but you can't have both and demanding that is ridiculous. Even now, the sole reason you're able to use Lemmy for free is because someone else is willing to take the financial hit by paying for the instance upkeep. We all just take it for granted.

If you're old enough, you remember that people put content up for free on the pre-Youtube internet and it was a much better place when made up of only enthusiasts and hobbyists. If Youtube and all its users treating the internet as a vessel for making money went away it would be glorious.

10

Someone is still paying for hosting that content. That works for text, pictures and gifs but once you move to videos it starts getting expensive. I too put content on YouTube without any intention to make money from it but I still understand that it costs YouTube money.

I'm all for passion projects but it still needs to be sustainable one way or another.
