Yeah, if he's buying them for his kids, chances are that he doesn't live there.

Imagine being one of the kids and seeing this is how your gift was done.

But at least you're in daddy's Top 5 of that 14.

Exactly what i was thinking!

"Hey kids, have some random shit some algorithm thought you might desire. Best dad ever, amirite?"

Showcasing his blatant disregard for his progeny in front of millions of people while trying to hype his latest stupid tech. It's really no wonder this guy's this richest person on the planet, just galaxy-brain shit 🤯

Well two have divorced him, he broke up with another one recently, and the fourth has disavowed him. So idk if he's even got one woman there

"Your computer has detected your credit card and is automatically purchasing items it thinks you need" was a very old Dilbert comic strip.

73

Pretty funny. I wonder which of his readers sent him that idea.

People can make the best things while being absolutely horrid and morally bankrupt. Demeaning a bad person's abilities lowers our guard against predatory meritocrats and gives them cover.

16

The comics weren't really that good. They just hit it right with a their target audience and that was because his readers would send Adams their stories. That's no secret. I honestly stopped reading them before he got political because it was getting repetitive and boring. I remember being done with him before he called fossils bullshit. There's only so many "Boss is Dumb" strips you can make before you're scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

Does this even appeal to anyone? "We can automate the only part of consumer capitalism that's any fun?" Seriously?

Billionaires have so much money they literally can't spend it all. A bot could blow $100K on their behalf and they could laugh it off as a funny story.

They've worked very hard to divorce their fate from the fate of the general public, that has worked, and it shows in ways they don't even perceive anymore. They don't have any reason to look for good deals. This is strictly an imaginary scenario for little people, from their point of view.

I mean... Shopping for parts and materials is usually my least favorite part of any project, conceptually not having to deal with that sounds great if I didn't have negative trust in the mechanism. If you find it fun, maybe we should team up!

4
feddit.online

I guess I would counter that the sort of project you have in mind isn't likely to be part of what I'd call "consumer capitalism." You're building something as opposed to buying that thing.

1

It's more like I have to buy things so I can build/fix other things, and tbh kinda the main input I still require from "the system". Belts, bearings, seals, gaskets, relays, control boards, pumps, props, etc. Recent outboard motor refurb is a great example: a new one would be $5-8k, I spent ~$300 doing rings and bearings, new impeller, new seals everywhere, new zincs, new prop, fresh paint, new spark plugs. Still had to do a lot of shopping! Arguably more than the high roller who just buys a new motor, that's a low double digit number of parts vs one big thing

Anyways it wasn't meant as an argument or some kind of rhetorical gotcha, more a long shot at making a new friend and not having to shop anymore lol. People have a lot of different ideas of fun, mine's closer to tearing something apart and seeing how it works than trying not to get ripped off while meeting material needs

1

I hope someone uses the information above for good one day.

The most ridiculous part is expecting someone to ask AI to spend hundreds of dollars on their behalf with zero supervision. You have to truly be in the top .3% for that to be a consideration.

61
davadreply

So...a "fun" reminder about the wealth gap. If you're in the top 0.1% of wealth in the US, you're still closer to homeless than you are to the billionaire+ class.

A source I found puts the top 0.1% at $64 million net worth (link) And the difference between 64 million and a billion is about a billion.

43

Depressingly after Occupy Wall Street, now it's not the 99%/1%, it's the 99.9%/0.1%.

19
prolereply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Maybe closer on the chart, but you can't pretend that the actual lived experiences between homelessness and $64 million in the bank aren't almost as different as they can possibly get.

7

The lived experience is definitely very different. But if the wealthiest group was only worth hundreds of millions, we might be able to avoid having any homeless.

I posted because people tend to have trouble internalizing just how big the wealth gap actually is. The brain can't really conceptualize how big a "million", "billion", or "trillion" actually is. It leads to a lot of misconceptions (another example, national budgets). I hope little nuggets like this will stick in people's brains to help them engage better with large numbers.

Edit: here's more data on the wealth gap

According to one source I found, there are 996 US billionaire+ that control $9.5 trillion. The bottom half controls $4.3 trillion.

If we pretend that 171,469,137 people are able to organize to the same degree as 996 people, and that those 171,469,137 people don't need to cover necessities with their wealth, the billionaire+ still have an outsized financial impact on politics and power structures.

WHO CARES. This fuck can buy a new identical house every hour of every day for the rest of his greedy life and still be disgustingly rich on his deathbed. I genuinely don't think people comprehend how much money this sociopathic narcissist has.

43
retrofed.com

Everyone in Austin knows where this house is. All his neighbors have beef with what he's done there and it's been in the news. I doubt he ever goes there based on what I've read.

(Technically it's in Westlake, which is a wealthy, white suburb that incorporated itself decades ago to avoid being annexed by the city of Austin. A lot of "fiscal conservatives" there.)

43

Nothing wrong with that. At least his neighbours don't have to see the misshapen dweeb hanging out at his pool.

3

I think they're probably more annoyed by the fact that it doesn't appear to actually be used as a private domicile and it's fucking up the scenery and inviting a lot of noise pollution and traffic that wasn't there before.

Also a bit of a dick move to just ignore all the local ordinances everyone else there is abiding by. Like a 6 foot fence is quite different than a 16 foot one.

God I wish I could see Musk in a guillotine. That's the public execution I'd like to watch.

So totally don't do it.

26

That's not his home address. But news about his home in the area has made it to the news in recent years due to a dispute he had with the city, and since it ended up going to public hearings there was a public notification requirement regarding the address.

23

What is it with american houses and having like 20 different roof surfaces?

8

I wouldn't be surprised the reason the address wasn't redacted is because he had AI make the post too.

20

Honestly, people that rich don't need to be worrying about their home address being public. Hell, we all used to have the addresses of everyone in town delivered to our front door. It was called the White/Yellow pages.

For people this rich, there's really no danger of their home address being public. Their homes have extensive security guards and tall fences. The address of someone like a twitch streamer getting doxed is a big deal. They're mostly just ordinary people that happen to have a very public job. If you're an average person without a security detail, having your address public means some rando could show up at your front door. For a billionaire, having your address leaked just gets added to the threat profile of your security team.

All of Austin is like this. It's really incredibly boring, very little to do (esp if you like natural beauty and the outdoors), and all has a mid tier feel. San Antonio at least has some neat architecture but Austin feels like one giant strip mall. I don't think I'd ever leave coastal northern California (even with absurd taxes that aren't actually used in a society improving way) but if I really wanted to avoid taxes at least parts of Nevada are close to the Sierras, or close to Zion.

7
v_krishnareply
lemmy.ml

Fair enough. There's also a nice history of cyber culture stuff in the 90s (FringeWare Review for example, though interesting to note Paco Nathan has long since relocated to Northern California). And obviously UT is a good school, I saw a great Ween show at Stubbs once, etc.

I was just in Austin last week and every time I go there and then come home to Berkeley I'm reminded how much I love where I live. And esp with teenage daughters how I'd never live somewhere that doesn't respect their fundamental rights.

5

UT has its flaws in bending the knee to the powers that be. They killed the "woke" programs like women's studies and cracked down on the ability to protest.

Austin does have outdoorsy stuff to do. There's the greenway and the parks. I guess the nature is not very integrated into the urbanized areas. This is because the urban planning is ass, as is the case in much of the USA.

As for rights, yeah. Fuck the butchers of Nueces and their modern successors.

I wouldn't expect the home address of anyone famous to be all that hard to find with a little effort.

14

From Zillow: This 6934 square foot single family home has 6 bedrooms and 7.0 bathrooms.

Fucking hell. That's nearly 650 square meters, larger than every home I've ever lived in combined.

13
sh.itjust.works

It's still not obscenely huge like some mansions are. That's a time and a half the size of the biggest house in my neighborhood, and I don't live in a huge city. It seems like a lot of bathrooms though for the size...

14

That's just his postroom house, the one he gets online orders sent to. So that they can't mailbomb his real house

I think I must have lived in countries with much smaller homes on average. I can't even imagine what a 650 square meter home looks like. It's over six times larger than my home now.

We rented an enormous house once when we had 6 kids living with us, and 2 more sometimes staying with us. 3,600 sq ft. Spacious as fuck even when 10 people were there. Unfortunately the landlord decided to sell it and kicked us out (apparently they can break a lease, we can't), but perfect timing as most of the kids were off to college or work.

I can't imagine twice as big would be better? At some point it's just useless space. Our house now is about 1800 I think, and it feels big.

3
lemmy.world

Oh I bet it would be great if they have a similar family dynamic to what I grew up with: loud, low emotional regulation, and not really wanting to spend too much time together

1

It was fun, there were always extra kids coming over and absolutely epic parties. We had just consolidated families so the kids were getting to know each other, they are close now and happy to have such a network of siblings. And yeah, several ADHD, but in such a big house there was room to hide out too.

How relatable, being able to not care about what precisely you are buying and how much it costs and letting an AI just spend a few hundred dollars without you even knowing whatever the hell it was.

If trying to show getting a gift, way to show that thoughfulness of fobbing off the whole process to a bot.
