What communities DON'T you want to see here?

I will start by saying I have toyed with posting this because as soon as someone says they don't wanna see it, someone will make a community for it. However I feel like some of the stuff that makes Reddit annoying is creeping over. And just because I don't like it does not mean its not a valid community. So if it is least put in the right place (rather that the bigger generic communities) I can then just filter or block it.

Ill start I don't want to see

  • Am I the arsehole
  • Relationship drama
  • Celebrity worship/drama

So what communities DON'T you want to see here?

Any sublemmy that's name starts with "fuck".

Always a miserable time, even if I agree with the sentiment of some of those places.

2

Focusing on things you hate leads to noticing more of the thing you hate. Sounds miserable.

I don’t care because I can just block the community.

I use voyager webapp and blocking a community takes 3 seconds:

  • you are in the „All“-tab
  • you see a community you want to never see again
  • you don’t have to enter the post or community, simply press and hold the community
  • tap „block community“
73

This is the way. Everybody has different interests, that is what "subscribed" is for. I have no interest in Anime, Sports and Porn, but do I think people with those interests shouldn't be here? No.

The question op asked is a legitimate one, and I deliver the solution to the whole problem. Instead of being frustrated from communities I can simply block them.

I do block and I’m getting better at it.

What’s prompted the question for me has been:

Relationship drama in ask lemmy
Celebrity crap in news

That’s just 2 there has been more. In R they would have been in defined spaces that I ignore. Here people don’t know where to put them so it’s usually a generic but common community. This has had me thinking what do I hope does not start appearing.

Still curious though. what one community DON’T you want to see here? Unlease your gripe, we all have them.

3

For lack of content on lemmy I basically use “All” like my personal feed.

Things I find 0 value in or which annoy me or impact me negatively get blocked.

It takes some time but if you keep blocking stuff it will get better

Communities that are about actively looking for things to get mad at. Cringe, lolcows, ragebait, etc. It's not healthy and it quickly devolves into bullying.

39
AskewLordreply
piefed.social

that's the majority of what drives people's engagement on the entire internet.

the most angry folks are the most engaged and produce the most content. and bullying is the point.

-7

selling crack is the best way to get quick buck! The most desperate folk are the ones you get the most money from. And getting them addicted and dependent on you is the point.

7

Any of the MGTOW/redpill/incel communities, as well as the communities posing as self improvement ones while feeding their new members directly into the redpill/incel pipeline.

46

I would propose that someone just make a conservative instance if they feel motivated enough to do so and then other instances can defederate according to what they feel is necessary.

Edit: half the posts are just hyper horny transfem lesbian memes too so I don't even know how you'd be offended by it

7

I had to go check when you said 'as a cis man'. I thought blaja was just some meme comm. Huh.

femcelmemes seems to be a very tongue in cheek community, based on what I've seen there. at best they roleplay the female equivalent of an incel to make fun of them.

depends on how you perceive of things. my experience of femcels is a lot of hostility and toxic behaviors.

but i don't think women are inherently weak or harmless, which if you do, would color how you interpret things, and is the default bias most folks have.

-4

*femcels are indeed as you described.

The femcelmemes community, as I said, is tongue in cheek and makes fun of femcels.

Important distinction.

I wish people would limit US politics to comms designated for that, rather than forcing the rest of us to wade through that filth looking for world news. It's already all over every other news source.

47

God damn I know, like you can't even escape it even in meme communities. The worst is the meme community posts that are literally just news posts in screenshot form. I don't fucking care, how is a screenshot of something an American politician said on Facebook or Twitter funny?

Keyword filters work pretty well for this. I have keyword filters for Trump, Musk, Boebert, RFK, and I couldn't give a flying fuck about if Mitch McConnell is dead or not.

6

Yeah, I have keywords for the usual suspects as well, but that requires them to be mentioned by name in the title, and it doesn't cover US politics not involving those.

3

the political people here will argue with you how the shape of your poo is a political act and determines your 'team'.

for a lot of people US politics is the only thing that gives their life meaning.

Fuck no, I DO wanna see the Lemmy flavor of AM I THE ASSHOLE!

We're all a bunch of older tech guys who regret how pro tech we were in the 00s or younger zoomers tryna "detox" from classic social media... or russian bots and creepy eastern europeans trying to convince be Black Arch should be my new daily driver. I WANT to see how you're the asshole there!

Like my god, imagine it. Imagine the kinds of things we'd see. Like

"Am I (52m) the asshole for telling my wife (59f) she can't use iPhone and telling her to use a dumbphone?"

Or some shit like

"Am I (20m) the asshole for telling my friends I'm not gonna make a tiktok account?"

my god, this would be glorious! I want it, I NEED IT, bro! I fucking NEED to see this shit!

I liked seeing AITA posts on bestofredditupdates. we can't have that without first having an AITA comm. So i support the creation of an AITA community

15

What would it be called?

It would need quite specific rules. I’m not creating it however I do worry about those kind of things.

I set up a guest tv and I felt really bad having to explain I use dedicated tv boxes and don’t want to tv connected to the internet. I was tempted to make a guide. I argued with myself it was an unreasonable expectation on my visitors.

2

Controversial, but fauxbait. It means "fake jailbait". Jailbait, of course, refers to lewd pictures of underage girls. So fauxbait is women who are of the age of majority, but strive to look as young as possible. They shave and wax, they don't eat as much as they should, and they're generally short to boot, so it looks like you're looking at a middle school kid, but it's really someone who can drink at the bar in America (21+).

Especially since Lemmy is so big on exposing the people in the Trump-Epstein files who are trafficking and abusing young women and girls, I don't want to see people posting fauxbait. It makes the whole fediverse look bad. Like we don't care about the girls, we only wanna take down the billionaires, and we only pretend to care about their extracurricular activities because it's ethical leverage.

I guess if you're 17-20, these girls are fine to you, but I'm pushing 50 and have nieces and nephews who are older than that. I like seeing grown women as much as the next guy, but if my first thought is, "she needs to put something on," she's probably too young (or is trying to look that way) and that's something I don't wanna see.

30

I think this one is very pertinent, I don't see a lot of fauxbait here but I get frustrated at the Anime when some of it skirts with similar issues. I know its a cartoon but it still perpetuates it, and it seems acceptable to portray sexualised youth because ya know it's just cartoon culture (yeh its not). The normalisation in so many areas is horrible to see.

Reddit used to have r/picsofdeadkids. I'm probably ok without that one.

I think there was a sub that was called /r/jailbait as well.

The fact that Reddit became mainstream after all that vile shit thriving on that platform is nothing short of insane.

Key to enjoying the fediverse is blocking the fuck out of every comm you dont want to see on your feed. I have lots of stuff blocked, some keywords and users as well. I recommended Voyager as a client, it has various features in that regard.

24
lemmy.world

I spend enough time playing whack-a-mole on my various platforms now that I might as well call it a hobby.

2

Yeah but this is how it should be. Too many poeple expect the feed to curate itself for them and we know how that ends up.

yeah and its nothing against the communities. sometimes its just not my thing. Even with users it might not be that bad a person but they just grate on me. With the fediverse I decided to throw out many of the internet conventions and treat it like I would real life.

1
Smoogsreply
lemmy.world

That's a very reductive meaning of word minority.

Minority doesn't just quantity. You can have large quantities of slaves and they are still the minority in a world where money=power.

Billionaires are not at risk of disenfranchised by someone with more power eg: money. In a world that benefits those with money with power.

They don't have their lives literally at risk over not being able to pay a medical bill. Or eat.

Billionaires benefit from social economic oppression.

Billionaires are social economic oppression.

5

They don’t have their lives literally at risk

Which is exactly the issue such a community would be addressing.

4
hemkoreply

That's not what minority means. What you're talking about is marginalized groups

it's funny how violence is totally cool here, as long as the person calling for it doesn't feel like they would be subjected to it.

-5
feddit.online

I have 0 patience for people who "don't want to see that" on fedi. The whole concept behind fedi is to have a single connected web of every social media platform -- the design and implementation is specifically intended to make space for literally everyone and everything. If you don't like encountering something, it is incumbent on you to use the curation tools at your disposal to remove it from your feed -- you have no right to try to remove it from fedi altogether.

12
slrpnk.net

Just because I'm saying I don't want to see it doesn't mean I don't want you to see it. Let's not get heated out the gate.

9
feddit.online

If this is straight out of the gate for you, I'm sincerely sorry your first comment you read on the matter was me getting heated. For me, this is approximately the 4 billionth thread about "how should we gatekeep fedi?" and I'm extremely over it, possibly to the extent that I react when "who should we gatekeep?" is only a small part of a larger conversation.

7

Sports communities.

I hate how many pop up post 3 things a day for a month then disappear. Bloats the hell out of my block list.

19
sopuli.xyz

It's because someone thinks "My team can have a community here!" And they try, they post stuff and try to get the fans together to talk about the team and sport they love.

But if there's minimal engagement, they eventually give up.

15
feddit.online

It's definitely discouraging. Getting to the point that the median post on ![email protected] was above zero took like 2-3 years -- I'm not surprised the vast majority of posters don't slog through.

2

For over a year it was only me posting in ![email protected] with almost no interaction.

I started following the nwsl because of your post's and community. I do not have time to watch games, but I b dope among because of you.

2

Yep so hard to scroll past. Wow there's a lot of butthurt people here

0

things that could bring the server under investigation for illegal activities.

otherwise, I can block them.

6
piefed.world

Most any community dedicated to reposting content from another site, especially if it's automated.

Simply reposting things from Reddit or feeding something like hackernews directly to a community is not helpful, and doesn't really inspire discussion. It just adds more noise that people have to sort out

9

I think the main thing there is not to just post links. repost the text of the source. Im don't care if it reduces traffic to the other sites. not going to reduce my traffic and I aint gonna to to it. so put in text to converse about or I won't be discussing it.

3

not so much community, but the general thing I can't stand is the victim echo chamber mentality things.

it's so bizarre to me. there is a lot of it here, and no matter if you block the communities the mentality is everywhere in every thread, and folks are hostile about it. and most of the communities here built around their victim status turn it into a superiority complex about how they have magical powers and abilities that their 'oppressors' do not.

9
lemmy.world

I came in here expecting people would want rightwingers and fascists banned. Instead a bunch of y'all are here just going "I block out anything that's not fun!!!1!!1!1! I don't want to be reminded of the very real issues that plague the world!!" which I mean, you have every right to do that I guess. Good for you, enjoy your hole in the sand

3

Humans were not designed to endure this 24/7 flood of miserable shit happening all over the world, which you can't have an effect on anyway.

It's often better to engage with it in a controlled manner, at least in my opinion, especially if you're already suffering from multiple severe mental health disorders like me, even without these things making it A LOT worse.

3

Being on niche platforms kinda makes forces you into accepting being around weirdos and fascists. You get used to it. It kinda makes me feel good knowing I'm better tbh

3

Yeah. Out of curiosity what does that help? Have you solved some problem that plagues the world? People don't have to be bombarded with how shit the world always is.

1

Im one of those people. You seem angry about the concept. Is it morally acceptable to have any facet of life that doesnt revolve around the very real terrors that we cant stop?

2

I don’t want to see any Reddit communities. Anything worth emulating there died 10 or more years ago. I’d rather we came up with our own original communities with actual standards.

IMO the worst Reddit communities are the ones themed around other Reddit communities and posts. Best of XYZ, XYZ updates, XYZ drama, etc. They are designed to generate shit-tier rage commentary and they get reposted relentlessly. I miss the days when reposters would get attacked in the comments and mass downvoted.

6

Any community that puts rules on who can post/comment. If it makes it to a front page it's free game. None of this bullshit of you have to be so and so to comment here; keep it subscribe only then.

0

pretty much if its unfun, then it gets blocked, so like pretty much everything politics related, most things pertaining to real world drama, and the communities that solely exist to bash on so-and-so. they are often pretty negative.

::: spoiler we block a lot of stuff, heres a screenshot!

:::

the reason we block stuff is simply that we're here for fun, not really to dabble in politics and so forth. there are times and places we set aside for that, where we do put effort into activism work, but this place is one we seek enjoyment in.

please remember that happiness is a vital part of healthy being :)

2

I don't want to see 'explain the joke' communities.

Some jokes are meant to be inside jokes, do your own research it takes a few secs, and the communities just become repost farms.

4

Asking what people don't want serves no function since you have no way to prevent it anyhow, it only serves to give trolls inspiration.

5
Cherryreply
piefed.social

I thought that at first but the truth is stuff is starting to migrate over and is appearing in communities such as this one or news etc. I would rather it was added but added in the right place. Then it gives the individual control to block.

I don't think it can be stopped and conversations and management are better thought of in advance.

I think my title could be less baity.

2

The other aspect you have to consider in the fedi vs typical sites is instances. It's entirely possible to have the same community name in several instances and the flavor of them be wildly different depending on the instance culture and mods.

5

Looking and other replies, I don't agree that this post has to have to do with technical solutions to what we don't want to see here. Obviously we can block what we don't want to see, so that's not even a question I find engaging. Instead, I'll make my response about what communities used to annoy me over at Reddit and why.

  • Grooming subs, subs that generate and/or distribute CSAM, ban evasion subs (hopefully I don't need to give reasons for this one. If you want reasons, ask).
  • White supremacist subs, because I'm leftist and I hate to see the otherization and demonization of marginalized people that they foster.
  • Big tech offshoots like r/TikTokCringe because I went to Reddit to get away from them before it went shit, news subs like r/news because if I want watch or read the news I go to my own sources, braindead slop like r/LivestreamFail because they're already available over at Meta's toilets and TikTok if I wanted to have anything to do with them.
4
lemmy.world

The best thing about Reddit is that it lets you mute any community you don't like, and you can even block notifications and your timeline from giving you recommendations or suggestions altogether. So honestly, with all these features, Idk how anyone could still have a problem with certain communities existing!

3
jayciferreply
lemmy.world

You can’t block any community you don’t like on reddit because there’s a limit on the number you can mute. I know this because I hit that limit before I deleted my account.

7

Exactly this! I left Reddit after I’ve reached this limit too, couldn’t even block porn anymore, what a failure.

3
lemmy.world

Honestly, I didn't know that there was a limit! That's going to be annoying for people who don't want to see certain subreddits, but at the same time don't want to isolate themselves like me!

2

It took me a while to figure out. I had a bad habit of scrolling r/popular for (effectively) infinite content, and I tried trimming it down to just stuff I liked by muting communities until one day it started giving me a simple error when I’d try to mute something. I searched around after a while and that’s when i found out about the limit. Reddit itself says nothing about the limit existing anywhere.

3

because you can still be targeted/reported/harassed by those people and their communities.

blocking/muting might give you peace of mind, but it doesn't isolate you from the negative externalities those communities bring with them towards you or other users/communities.

0
piefed.social

I'm tired of people dragging politics into literally everything. We give them communities to talk politics in. We give them some leeway to talk politics here and there. But for the life of them, they won't shut the fuck up about ANYTHING political.

2

because that's their worldview. 'everything is politics'

and when you think that way, it's a justification for being a total hypocritical ass who wants to lecture everyone else but gets 'offended' when they see politics they don't agree with.

and their justification for violence and harassment towards others. they need you to be on the other team, so they can dismiss/hate/threaten you.

-10

How do people see the niche communities? On my private instance I only see the communities I subscribe to and on lemmy.word's main page you only posts from the most active ones.

1
