One of my favorite mods is called DoomRL Arsenal and one of the things it does is add different kinds of barrels. One of them is a nuke, and although it's very rare, you usually get at least one when playing that map. I've got some hilarious memories of trying to avoid certain death
One of my favorite COD maps I worked on was in BO6, it was a border checkpoint with lots of cars that would explode with enough damage. But if one car exploded, it was close enough to cars near it that it would trigger chain reaction explosions. We reported it as a bug, they returned it with Will Not Fix, and then changed it when the sweaty players started complaining after the map went live
Fallout 3 has tons of exploding cars as well! There's a highway next to a raider camp, with many derelict cars, trucks and buses all in close proximity. One of the raiders in that camp is equipped with a missile launcher and a complete disregard for their own safety, and it's common to get sent to the moon if they see you as a missile hits a car and sets off a gigantic chain reaction of mushroom clouds.
I mean look, no one can really claim explosive barrels are the peak of game level design. But the only interactions in the first 3 hours of that game were "Use pistol on headcrab/barnacle". HL2 kept you to a pistol, but it also teased you into shooting the environment more than the cops, even if in retrospect they were being happily suicidal for Overwatch. It was a lesson in the kinds of variety other FPS's tend to inject at around the 20 minute mark by giving you a shotgun at least.
Sometimes it's frustrating in games where I want to save ammo and travel very quickly through an area, but in HL series and Garry's mod it was perfect.

Tfw shoot red cylinder in game and nothing happen.
What you do is make it spring a leak.
Bonus activation when your friend is standing right beside it
To remind him that all maps are FF maps
The Half-Life 2 9mm is one of my favorite guns in all of gaming. The sound and feel of it when you pop metrocops' heads is just so satisfying imo.
I can automatically hear the sounds of popping that handgun off 4-5 times and hearing the Combine soldiers go down.
pop-pop-pop-pop-pop
microphone screeches and radio static
Doom 2 map 23 named "Barrels o'fun". If you played it you remember it.

That part where you slide them down for the barnacles to grab before you explode the barrels on them is such great game design
That shit made me kind of hate Half-Life: Alyx.

Hardest part of trying to do a stealth run.
Redeploy barrel
Here you have a vídeo about barrels in gaming https://youtu.be/LMYEE8lvlvA
The computers and office chairs in Goldeneye 64 going up in orange fireballs when you shot them was peak satisfaction.
And the tradition continues in Agent 64.
