Depends on use case. If Ubuntu is what you yourself like best? Then yeah totally.

If you want a stable system that just works, that doesn't require tinkering and closely monitoring updates, and those are your only two choices? Yeah, Ubuntu is a much better choice than Arch.

9

Stock Arch, yeah, sure...ish. I have an Arch install that's been running fine with no fuckery for 3 years, and there's Arch derivatives that are really stable.

I installed WSL, to install Ubuntu, to install Hackintosh, so I could VNC my self into it on my work laptop for testing apps on it.

So yeah, not bad.

Hold up. You’ve virtualised Mac OS via WSL? That’s pretty bad ass

14

Wouldn't call it bad ass. It was just a bit weird installing a bad OS on a nice OS on an evil OS.

Also, there are good instructions online to achieve this.

15

Makes me remember that old meme about being able to play mario bros inside another mario game inside another, inside another emulator inside linux inside the matrix

3

Is Proton a Debian-based distro?

Why use Wine? All it does is emulate Windows.

WSL invalidates Linux's existence.

Linus is the Colonel of Linux.

How to piss off a Linux guy in 3 steps:

Step 1: Use Windows

Step 2: Encounter a computer problem and ask the Linux guy for a solution.

Step 3: When they say they don't know Windows, mock them for being so stupid despite staying in the terminal playing pretend hackerman all day.

Go back to the retirement home grandpa. Computers are grok prompts now with subscription tokens. Pass me the verification can gramps. Heil musk!

8

Really old people seem to be the heaviest AI users, or at least they are in my bubble. So maybe pa is getting it on with an AI granny in that retirement home.

4

A good one is saying windows is the best Linux distro because you can just run exes straight from the shell

~/dev/foo $ msbuild.exe MyProject2026UltimatePro.sln | grep Error(s)

Try it and confirm there is no god

6

I had an experience something like that once. The guy snorted at me and said: "I thought you knew about computers". I just stood up and said: "You know, you're absolutely right. Good luck fixing the issue." and I left.

  1. Terrible choice, but if it works for you...
  2. For some use-cases, sure.
  3. wine program.exe
  4. "Then what have I been playing Pong on all this time?"
  5. It is, actually. WSL isn't "proper" Linux, but it's there!
  6. Yeah, imagine...
44

2. I would treat this as a hypothesis and answer: "Debian"

7

About 3.:

Thats how to break your wine prefix. Always use either a prefix manager like bottles or at least set your WINEPREFIX= variables

4

I did get a chromebook ... and then I put Linux on it.

(Not bad for a $0.50 purchase.)

No love for YYYY-MM-DD?

If you see a date in that format, it's pretty unambiguous.

44

Also great for naming files in the filesystem, and thereby giving it both context and a sorting space.

I started doing so in my company on the shared network space years ago, and many colleagues have started using this as well.

You're right. I literally forgot the first two Y. Or rather I assumed they were implied.

DD/MM/YY

Days are shorter than months, which are shorter than years.

Makes sense to go with smallest to largest.

4

Ah, but the month number set is smaller than the day number set. It makes just as much sense to order by sets.

Plus, starting with the month gives you time to remember what day it is without having to sit there awkwardly.

2

But this would lead to files from the first of any month and any year to be bunched together.

2

I prefer classifaction in descending order.. Narrow down the yearx then the month then the day then the hour then the seconds. Absolutely nobody wants seconds first then minutes

Ugh you don't need to write 30 million lines of code to install a browser. You need to compile 30 million lines of code to install a browser. 🙄

#5 is actually true. Install Ubuntu for WSL from the Windows store. WSL is great BTW

22
lemmy.dbzer0.com

1- No, Windows 11 mains you

2- Yes, ubuntu is much larger than arch

3- We have many ways to install anything

4- No, but neither does Windows, who at Microsoft is troubleshooting your games?

5- Yes! But Windows works much better on linux than linux does on Windows

6- Imagine 30 million lines to fix your last update

4- hey windows actually has a useless troubleshooting wizard, and when cortana gets good enough they might just revive clippy

7

I miss Clippy. Sure he was obnoxious, but you could tell him to fuck off and he would listen.

9

For three, say "command prompt" instead.

In fairness, several major distros are available on the Microsoft store.

17

Recompiling the kernel is a privilege, not an obligation!

9

How awesome is Windows? I mean the way it runs so smooth…you can like process a lot of processing with the processor. Like if they added AI to the ESC key, that would really be awesome.

13

Just to be clear. You're calling Linux shovelware, right? /s lmfao

4
piefed.zip

It used to be a meme that you need to recompile your kernel any time something goes wrong on linux, or to do anything.

Its just a fucking outlandish nonsense critisism. The joke is that it sounds like the way some people have criticized linux without realizing they don't know that they're talking about, and it's exacerbating how silly it is to being cartoonishly absurd

slrpnk.net

They have had their Store for over 10 years now. I envy you if you haven't had to deal with Windows for so long. It's not even user-friendly anymore, it just hates it's users and constantly tries to scam you with ads and pop-ups

7

Tbf if you’ve only used windows at home and not for work, it was pretty easy to just not know about the Microsoft store at all until pretty recently.

I used windows all the way up to last year and only found out about the windows store after swapping to Linux

7
lemmy.world

Say there's no need for Linux when you have WSL (but pronounce it W.S.L.)

5
lemmy.world

You can always tell a Linux user by the body order. Oh and they're all hackers and on a government watchlist.

Edit: odor, not order

4
fedia.io

My body order is head, shoulders, knees and toes (knees and toes). I have no idea how that flags me as a Linux user.

17

Given the reference, it would have been a decent burn if you'd said Mint or Ubuntu.

I'm an LMDE user which is a sliver more advanced, but not by much. The song might even fit better. I can point at and name parts of the system and maybe even work with them, but most of the time someone else is looking after me.

3
lemmy.world

Excuse you. I’m on a government watch list for entirely different reasons. I am not a hacker.

8

I installed Nobara just yesterday and the installer had a game to play

  1. Best of luck with that
  2. If it works for you then great, that's the power of freedom/choice

if the kernel isn't set to forward .exe to wine, wine example.exe also works.

I thought it was under Window's terminal since that's what the person uses.
