I guess I shouldn't be surprised Ms. Rachel has a million dollars, but here I am having not really thought about it before.

ltxrtquqreply
lemmy.ml

And I haven't seen a single one of them. I've heard of Ms. Rachel, but she doesn't really play a part in my life.

19

Just letting you know! Not passing judgment on you lol. I was surprised to learn how many views she’s accumulated myself today.

31

Wow. She was popular in our house for a while but through Netflix (and even overtook that God awful Cocomelon for the top spot on most watched in Ireland for kids) but I never knew she'd reached such heights.

I already thought she was one of the kindest souls on this earth but this whole thing is just the icing on the cake.

17

Not just has a million dollars, but has enough millions to give one away, and presumably still have millions left over.

20
lemmy.world

This woman is just the greatest. What an absolute legend.

42

Big time. From that article:

“Ed Sheeran had an opportunity [to] show that we won’t be bullied into punishing people for supporting Palestine. Instead he caved to people who refuse to accept what the world knows. A genocide is happening in Gaza. We all need to speak out against it.”

POW! Right in the kisser. Absolute BOSS lady.

44

It’s good to finally see Israel’s genocide of Gaza starting to be recognized by western mainstream media, and that several famous celebrities are using their platforms to advocate for the Palestinian cause. I can only hope there will be some form of justice for the Palestinian people eventually…

lemmy.world

I'm confused, why call out just white people? A million dollars is a million dollars...

34
lemmy.world

By the time someone has enough millions to toss them around to various causes, their race is a rounding error in their level of privilege. All this does is try to reframe a class vs class struggle as a race vs race struggle.

16
lemmy.world

It's so funny that you guys are getting up voted when I said almost the exact same thing and hammered for it. Love the consistency. I have the exact view you do. Adding white to this feels performative rather than actually wanting too solve the problem. It's "woke 1.0" vibes.

-2
lemmy.world

Yours came across as a pithy comment coming from a “woke bad” reactionary frame commonly associated with right wing influencers. Mine was rhetorically better for Lemmy, and included a clear “no war but class war” dog whistle that appeals to a large crowd here.

We agree on the substance on this issue, but your rhetoric doesn’t match your audience.

For real black artists like Kendrick have been a huge disappointment. Their big mouth about the oppressed never went past their own neighborhood. Instead the whitest guys on the block are stepping up.

9
velmareply
sh.itjust.works

Kendrick routinely donates to charities. He focuses on Compton and LA, but to paint it like he doesn't donate to causes that serve the underprivileged isn't quite accurate.

lemmy.world

I think it works like this: If your friend makes this joke to you and a small group of friends, and you know they're not racist, and just being silly, it's okay. If you hear a stranger shout this in a crowd, it's too risky to give them the benefit of the doubt. Because they might be a bad actor trying to drum up support with the wrong kind of people. You all feel like like-minded friends to me, but you're really strangers, and so are the people who can hear what you say.

10
boonhetreply
sopuli.xyz

Okay but with the context of the headline and the presence of an emoji, you can easily tell this is a light-hearted joke. Some people seem to be looking for problems where there are none.

4

There are plenty of people in the comment sections of these articles actually complaining about white people being targeted. It's a matter of reading the room.

7

you certainly are proud in your ignorance of what it takes to have spare millions while white in america vs what it takes to have spare millions while not white in america. odds are, for one of them you just have to work harder than the other given the same circumstances and dilemmas etc.

lemmy.world

Dumb to specify white celebrities.

Edit: Yes I understand white privilege. But, don't all celebrities have privilege? Don't all wealthy people have privilege? I don't know why people insist on turning classism into racism.

-20

Later in her statement:

We have a moral obligation to use our privilege and platforms to protect children and human rights.

She has been blasted 24/7 for not “staying in her lane”, so I think she understandably wants to draw a direct causal line explaining why this “is her lane”.

the anglosphere is the primary driver of the genocide happening in gaza rn

55
lemmy.world

So only the "anglosphere" should donate to defend them? Do you actually want to defend them or do you just want something performative?

-6
lemmy.ca

Nobody is preventing others from donating as well. This is about calling out the anglosphere for their inaction.

That's the most clarifying take I've heard. Thanks, that perspective makes sense.

Ok but you could just say NFL owner without the white in this case. I'd never imagine them to live in a ghetto no matter their race. The fact that they're (probably, havent checked the link yet) all white does not mean I don't associate the ownership part with wealth. Wealth is dirty no matter the color.

2
danc4498reply
lemmy.world

30 out of 32 NFL owners are white billionaires. All colluding to prevent somebody from using their stadiums to give support to brown people that are being mass murdered by other white people.

I also find it funny that if you click the link, the first person in the list is the only non white owner. What are the odds.

3
sh.itjust.works

Yes but the point you're missing is that the way you focus on it, it makes it seems like their "whiteness" is the reason they are evil, not their billionaire status. Like it would be ok if they weren't white. Do you get where I'm going with this?

0
danc4498reply
lemmy.world

Their whiteness is relevant to them using their power to prevent people from spreading a message that highlights the suffering of brown people

0
sh.itjust.works

Ok that must be a football thing then. I'm not american so that's not a context I'd think about.

1

Well, this is the entire story we're commenting on. The billionaire NFL owners own these stadium, and are working together to prevent Macklemore from spreading his message.

4

.world, the reddit refugee instance, is the biggest instance by a good margin. That instance alone gets you like 10% nazis and 60% one minor inconvenience away from being a nazi.

4
lemmy.world

Don't leftists recognize the real struggle is class based? Every time you distort it to be race based you encourage the in fighting that the Epstein class wants you to do.

1
rockSlayerreply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

A fatal mistake for leftists is to narrow in on only class. Class is extremely important, but it's not everything. As working class people, we have to acknowledge the harm that occurs to people in minority groups. If our class-based politics aren't intersectional with queer, black, brown, women, and other political minorities, we will not achieve a classless society

2
lemmy.ml

You should read

-W.E.B. Du Bois, Black Reconstruction in America

-Oliver C. Cox, Caste, Class, and Race: A Study in Social Dynamics

-Friedrich Engels, The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State

-Lise Vogel, Marxism and the Oppression of Women: Toward a Unitary Theory

Racial and Gender discrimination is a direct product of class relations not a second system operating alongside it.

2

Yes, but the system of class oppression manifests differently for these diverse groups, which means that all individuals will have a unique perspective on these systems of class oppression. A queer person has a different experience from a black person. A black trans woman will have a unique experience that is intersectional to queer, black, and women's struggles for liberation.

For us to dismantle class oppression, we need to understand and address how class is used to oppress minorities

3

That doesn't mean we ignore racial and gender discrimination to focus only on class.

2

I only wish I had more than one upvote for this comment. You are exactly right.

1
lemmy.world

Are all those minority groups part of the 99% being oppressed by the Epstein class? Yes. They are part of the classist system. Obviously they're included, nobody should have to suffer homelessness, starvation, lack of healthcare, etc...

0

In the same way "all lives matter" or "not all men" or "equal lefts"?

Read the room, pal. Whites have privilege, privilege is power, and refusing to do good with the privileges youre given is objectively evil.

24
velmareply
sh.itjust.works

"The way people higher up our social hierarchies are reliably listened to over those lower down these unjust rankings is itself a major injustice. And it’s a pernicious everyday fact of life under oppressive systems like patriarchy and white supremacy. But there’s a right way and a wrong way to respond to the situation as a more privileged person. The right way involves speaking up when others who are less privileged won’t be heeded in the same way, and then using your power and privilege to amplify the voices of the marginalized folks who’ve long been shouting into the void. A wrong way is speaking over those who are better positioned to understand the issues due to their lived experience. But there’s another wrong way too: maintaining a scrupulous silence."

"When powerful and privileged white people speak in defense of Black and brown people subject to state violence and colonization and genocide, there’s often a long overdue moment of reckoning."

I doubt that time is in Lemmy's side -- the Epstein class's brainworms have proven to be self sustaining enough to trigger episodes like piefed and tesseract's attempts to suppress leftist content so it's only a matters of time until something sticks -- presuming that it hasn't already happened.

4

I’ve found a good number of people who participate here are quite reasonable and lovely.

2
lemmy.world

Sure, why not. Celebrities by definition have the attention of many people. I just don't see the point of narrowing that down even further.

3
velmareply
sh.itjust.works

Because wealthy white celebrities have more influence.

2

That's a weak excuse. By definition a subset of influential people still have less influence than the entire group of influential people.

0

Presumably she wanted to respect the fact that nonwhite celebrities might have causes closer to home that need their financial support. Or just that she can't speak for them, so she's staying in her lane. And calling out those whose extra privilege makes them extra blind.
