Why cheap storage solutions are not being developed or advertised to consumers?

I think we would all hoard data if it was cheap.

Today I had to suggest cloud storage. That's the cheapest and easiest to maintain.

There is optical storage solutions that is adequate for most consumers and even LTO tapes it is fast enough, can be produced cheaply but the drives are advertised to businesses and sold with that business premium cost.

This bugs me. Also the fear of being deported soon

Build an Unraid server out of any cheap hardware you have. Toss in any assortment of HDs you have lying around of any size. Very efficient, safe and easy to upgrade. Best computer purchase I’ve made since 2016 and I own two of them now.

It's not hoarding. It's securing. Cloud services can't be trusted to be secure and available in the long term, some of them not even in the short term. They are capricious and arbitrary in their unilateral termination of service without notice.

Average punters can’t be trusted either.

Whenever I go to my family’s houses to check the NAS’s, they are often turned off (or not turned back on after a power outage, or having been unplugged).

I would love to roll out some integrated, but modular solution with RAID, UPS, remote synchronisation and reporting, that doesn’t require a 19” rack.

Unfortunately, the rest of my family barely comprehend the need for a reliable backup, let-alone data sovereignty.

What about a 10 inch rack? Jeff geerling has a few good videos on Nas solutions in a 10 inch rack

Also the fear of being deported soon

i''m an american citizen, but i have family members there were also american citizens and they were deported nonetheless in the early 20th century -- you're right to be concerned.

My situation is worst, i am in middle east from the country at war with yours but I live and was born in an arabian country.

It is weird that I envy those people in America, I rather be them now.... maybe, I don't know.

Storage is incredibly cheap.

Spinning metal has been trending towards a penny a gigabyte for two decades. Things seem bad now but it’s only 3 cents a gigabyte like 2018.

Lto is also incredibly cheap by any measure in comparison to the past.

Great. We are back to 2018 prices.
We are oh so fortunate the prices just doubled and not went back to 1990s level for >100GB drives... /s
