Why don't they give to Linux Foundation? Or Debian/void or other projects..
So pissed; just found out about this Saturday, so I spent Saturday evening checking out the VPS providers, and Sunday moving everything over, re-importing data, dealing with DNS caching delays, etc. I had other plans this weekend. I was a fan of DO, even have DOCN shares, which I'm going to dump.
Well, at least, if everything works out with OVH, I'll have double the RAM and be paying less than half of DO.
Overpriced VPS reseller joins the Fascist Linux Project.
Seems like everything is being run over by fascists these days.
Honestly that may be the entire point of this. The right wingers are trying to carve out their own corner in the world of FOSS. Understandable given the spirit of open source is literally the antithesis of what they believe in, however they also can't ignore it now cause it's vital infrastructure.
"Fascism in your technology is inevitable"
Is this some new money laundering thing? Are companies "buying in" to hobnob with other wealthy people? Is this just the latest Country Club or whatever?
I seriously don't understand why all these companies are throwing money at a project that is almost assuredly going to "mismanage" it.
If I had to guess, this is the techbro/epstein crew trying to get a foothold in Linux. The writing is on the wall; Windows is dead, and they want to funnel the migration into their new Omarchy ecosystem. They’ll probably start advertising bigly once Kushner and MBS invest.
Windows isn't dead, anyone that actually believes that is lying to themselves.
They are too ingrained in business. Yes a couple countries will save a couple billion over the next several years getting off it but that is nothing to the 90 billion MS made in the past 3 months.
What percentage of that 90B is OS windows and what oercent is cloud? As per their 10K filings?
I think they might mean that Windows is ultimately a dead end. I agree that its far from dead, but Valve really got the ball rolling with Proton.
Now that there's a bunch of bigger influencers "trying Linux" as a daily driver and often having a good experience, coupled with Windows/Microsoft shooting themselves in the foot every other month, I think we're seeing a shift in people's perception (at least regarding what their possible options are). That said, Linux still has a ways to go until it even breaks 10% desktop share, and I don't think it will be a threat even to Apple until Linux hits 15%.
10% of stock Chrome users on Linux, basically, is what you are waiting for on the graphs.
Nobody on Linux uses Chrome, however, and many disable telemetry. We need to normalize small amounts of statistics. Nobody will be able to trace you based on just
uname -srpio."Nobody" That's the 4% market usage, clearly
It was a relative "nobody"
To be honest, I think you are the one lying to yourself here. From the linked report:
"(4)" equals "-4".
Even MS isn't using windows exclusively. And they don't care, as the long term scenario they are aiming for, is, that everybody only uses a minimal system and rents compute in the cloud. That's, where the money is for them. I am quite sure, they don't give a single eff, what those devices are using as an OS. It won't be win 11 for sure.
So everything Windows as we know it, is what's consumer GPUs are to Nvidia.
A real life example, I know a company whose low level employees use a Dell mini pc with a custom OS whose only job is to RDP into Citrix. All the data and compute is on the cloud.
Thin clients
Even Microsoft knows Windows is dead. That's part of the reason for the push for office365 over locally installed applications. It's not dead as in everyone will stop using it next year, but it's dead as in it might only have 10 years left as THE dominant desktop OS, maybe more, maybe less.
What they're really ingrained in business with is their ERP bullshit. Migrating a bunch of users from Windows to Linux is cheap and easy compared to migrating all your data AND users from Dynamics to SAP or Odoo or something. It's such a headache, you basically never do it in-house, you contract that out to a company that specializes in the ERP you're moving to. Because it's not just data you're migrating, it's business processes too. Bunch of custom modules usually need to be created, yay!
Can confirm, switching ERP or billing systems is a risky multi-year nightmare with a price tag that makes even larger corps blush.
And then you have the updates! That's fun! They sell ERPs as SaaS, but it doesn't work like any other SaaS. The major updates break tons of shit because your own customizations will be based on upstream fields and methods that no longer exist. Not as bad as migrating to another ERP entirely, but not exactly cheap. At work, we keep support for our custom modules for longer than the ERP company itself supports those old versions so our customers get an extra year or 2 out of it. It's a pretty big deal for them and of course great for us, helps retention because they'd have to spend more for less if they go to the competitors (on even the same ERP that is - going to another ERP wouldn't just be a migration cost, the annual cost itself would go up too).
At my previous job we handled much of this in house because we were a rather large company and could do so. We ran into the same things because our bolted on processes would need to be maintained indefinitely because every ERP system update tended to break things in unspecified ways. I no longer need to do this sort of thing, but if I never have to write code for legacy IBM systems again I'll be happy.
Isn't Omarchy built on top of Arch Linux? I wonder what sort of effect it will have on Arch to have companies injecting millions into this downstream project?
Arch devs have opaquely but clearly lambasted this in public. Apparently DHH tried to sponsor Arch and they turned him down flat.
https://floss.social/@serebit/117242959044264331
They aren't putting anything worth upstreaming into their shitty Nazi treehouse
My bet is that the tech bros hang in the same bar, and they’re just doing that for fun, and they don’t really care about the plebes not getting it.
Glad I left Digital Ocean like almost a decade ago, yet it still feels I’ve been with them for too long.
When capitalism can't find a new way to grow and is challenged by dominees, it funds fascism as an investment towards to guarantee their dominance
👨🚀🔫 always has been
thanks for the heads up
Take that survey, express yourself
oh, i did
But why? Why is everybody funding this piece of shit? Besides being shit politically it's also shit technically. I don't get it.
Well, you see, it's somehow using AI and it's run by a dick.
What's not to love about it?
Temu Elon?
It’s not about the software. It’s about creating a far right pipeline. Like they did with gamers and anime. Billionaires pay for users.
Guy who made a popular thing once announces revolution in efficiency, looks impressive on the surface but is just desktop riding for the uninitiated.
I’m more flabbergasted
how littlewhat you have to do to get 3 millionEDIT: Changing this up as I’m sure a lot of people work hard on this thing and perhaps more did before this guy outed himself as a douche
Did you mean ricing?
Have you seen GoPros stock price in the 30 days?
I'm so lost. What does GoPro stock have to do with Omarchy and DO?
GoPro was kinda washed... They had huge success early but they thoroughly over-saturated their own market and then stagnated in the face of competition. Maybe about a week ago announced they were now an AI/datacenter company...
Point is, if you slap an AI label on just about anything someone out there will give you money
Oh it's like that shoe company declaring they are an AI company.
A youtuber with a large following bought a substantial share in GoPro. I think it is is a comment on how immature stans are subservient to their para-social relationships and throw their money at men they idealise instead of working to improve themselves. Comparing Markiplier with DHH is really unfair to Markiplier but its all the same weak minded exploitable herd behaviour. It doesn't matter if you are a preacher, politician, con artist, influencer or OF model - manipulating fools seems to be part of the human condition.
@statelesz @selfhosted @bretton.dev
You just explain why......
I just don't get it. Separating the art from the artist is not a black and white thing...Like a lot of people worked on the harry potter movies and many people fell in love with those before reading the books, and when Rowling went anti-trans, you could reasonably argue that the films were a collaborative work that you can still love. But this? A pre-configured Arch made by one guy who makes his headline presence maligning minorities? I don't see how giving money to him is anything other than a company saying his views are explicitly endorsed by the donor.
Even if we do separate the art from artist, what's the actual draw of this distro?
honestly, if it wasnt for lemmy i would have no idea the guy was racist. i just hear "ruby on rails creator has new distro thats easy to use".
And if it wasn't for your post I wouldn't know he created Ruby on Rails
I think after initial hyprland success showing what's possible, more similar window managers and desktop environments cropped up and that is the real benefit for all of us and that happened without omarchy. I'm currently on mangowc + DMS and I think it's better than hyprland.
Really feels like it. Look at the paragraphs and the list here.
For anyone who is struggling to figure out how to delete their DigitalOcean account (it's not obvious):
5 - Thanks for your input casually puts paper in bin, it was great having you...
I am not an Omarchy or DHH hater but....why? It's Arch with Hyperland, why are people fawning over it? Is it just because he keeps saying "agentic"?
I'm agentic too, how about throwing me a million bucks?
It's not about being a "hater" or not. DHH is basically a white supremacist and it should be basic human decency to oppose that
Most of the people going on about him take a lot of umbrage with his racist ideology, but all he seems to do with it is blog. If there are more material concerns (like with Proton) then I'm not seeing them be raised.
People who have raised money before are better at raising money. Not that I fully understand why they throw so much at this project. But I don't also quite understand why some projects get billions just like that.
networking plays a big roll in such things. the more connections you have, the more possibilities. in my job that is normal as well ( not for donations, but it's important to get a job)
WTF. Why not contribute to Arch, Cachy, KDE, Inkscape, Krita, Kdenlive etc. Omarchy is just a meme distro of half arsed dotfiles. How is hyprland better than Niri or Cosmic built on Smithay which are at least written in an over hyped safe modern language. Why are some d-list tech celebs dotfiles better than my quickshell config? And how about we sponsor something that would make a real difference to people like better accessibility in Gnome and KDE or is that too woke these days?
If you announce yourself as a fascist, the fascists will pay you. Its how most of them make their living; the rest steal from their employees
Or i3/sway for that matter.
I have a meeting with a DigitalOcean Account Manager scheduled for tomorrow because I wanted to move my business over from Azure. Guess it’s time to cancel it and tell them why.
It's a shame, I actually really liked their service when I used it. There documentation in particular was really excellent.
Good luck finding a non-evil (or at least less evil) service, sincerely.
How can an outsider support your business?
This is hilarious
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jan/23/israeli-military-gaza-war-microsoft
Yes, go with the MIC, actual fascist supporting megacorp to stick it DO
Honest to God, I'm not a tin foil hat kinda guy, but I can't wait to read the papers on the strategies around centralizing technically adept 'activists' (WH definition lol) onto cooperative platforms by hugely exaggerating tiny shit like this in 40 years. This is even more poorly sighted than the Mullvad stances from a few weeks ago.
How many killings did digital ocean orchestrated with AI?
I think your comment is needlessly antogonizing. I’m not unaware of MS’s complicity in the genocide, which is why I’m moving away in the first place.
"The genocide"? Is there just one?
TWO genocides!?
Common weirdo ml take
From reading about Omarchy and community reactions it sounds like DHH is a successful grifter, milking money from corps with pictures of agentic promised land. HOWEVER grift will go bust at some point: does anyone remember SaaSpocalipse that did not materialize, along with numerous articles from people with degrees pointing out that there's no data supporting claim that AI is actually making money for it's peddlers or consumers. AI grifts will continue until "market" will finally acknowledge it for what it is (it's just a new shiny tool, no more) and all the myths go bust and investors will want their money back. So - yes money got "stolen" from actual OSS projects that keep world's lights on, yes vibecoding has not been proven to scale or endure multiple decades like Debian, Gentoo, Fedora etc. so it'll collapse from technical standpoint, but it WILL collapse unless DHH will start applying those grants towards hiring engineers. Token money are not worth paper they are printed on so everybody just chill and let this trainwreck go off the cliff on it's own. Shame DO got into it though... but for all the major cloud platforms who isn't supporting fascism? What differs is the scale.
Meanwhile the maintainers of the project it’s based on are unpaid.
Not exactly.
https://omarchy.org/news/2026/09/omacom-foundation-hires-outfoxxed/
I don't like dhh and I think someone like him shouldn't control this much money going into foss but I think the point of omacom is to pay those maintainers
Only the subset they like (it shouldn't take you long to find what they said about why they made their own project, like who they wanted to exclude)
Do tell me why anyone should fund projects they don't like.
There goes my weekend migrating off of DO. I should have left sooner but supporting this crap is lighting a fire under me.
im not very knowledgeable about the current situation. can you enlighten me? why the sudden surge on digitalocean hate?
Precisely because of what is described in the post.
Omarchy is an Arch-based Linux distribution created by a person with questionable political views. Many in the Linux community will go great lengths to ensure not a single penny of theirs gets into his hands.
He doesn't have "questionable" political views, unless you consider open xenophobia and fascism no more than questionable. He went beyond questionable a while ago and into being truly unpleasant and promoting harmful ideas.
perpetuating arch on society is the biggest crime
but also the racism and white supremacy
Left-of-center people hate DHH and by extension everything he does and everyone he networks with because "he's a fascist".
Maayyyyybe because he is?
I mean, if far-left radicals call someone a fascist, that's debatable. But everyone left of center? Maaaaaybe they're onto something here?
Hmm.
https://jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-way-worse-than-i-thought/
but why? its a shitty distro made by an amateur. there are real who needs support
It makes gatekeeper types in the Linux ecosystem happy, because it preinstalls you neovim, hyperland, and a bunch of bloatware, so they can get to their tinkering much faster.
Not that I want to disparage anything you're saying, but: I'm fairly sure the person you replied to was calling Omarchy users "gatekeepers". That's how I read it anyhow
Damn, are we watching live growth of digital Fascist cancer here ? We all get spammed with this worthless, non-special OS in every information outlet, YT, SN's and other for-profit junk outlets. People are getting paid to keep posting about it everywhere.
Pretty disgusting to see how rich Pschos think and act, and pretty disheartening to see our 'non-enshittified' world be enshittified in front of our eyes! Enshittification = Capitalization.
Boycott Omarchy by all means necessary, and help not spreading this Capitalist/Fascist cancer project anywhere.
Okay I'm seeing further chicanery. Their GitHub repo gives the license as MIT but many of the components are not Omarchy originals but derivatives of other products under different licences. Quickshell is LGPL 3, for example, and of course the Linux kernel is GPL 2.
But then there's a guy working on the "Omarchy Kernel", which I guess is a derivative like Ubuntu does...
Personalities aside this is still weird, and I wish people would focus on that.
I don't think that matters here. NixOS is also MIT licensed.
The nix package(?) system, sure, but the eponymous OS of course has parts under a diversity of licenses, including a GPL kernel.
What I don't get/trust if how Omarchy just slaps an MIT label on its GitHub even when I can see software in there that I know use different licenses.
Lemmy is gonna love that the whole thing is vibe coded
https://omarchy.org/news/2026/09/omacom-foundation-secures-tokens-from-leading-labs/
Sigh time to find a new vps host for my projects
Anyone have any recommendations?
I use GreenCloudVPS for a bunch of things. They used to have VPSes starting at $15/year for 2GB RAM and 20GB disk, but their current budget deals are still good (starts at $25/year for 4GB RAM and 35GB disk). These are on older hardware (mostly AMD EPYC Rome Zen 2 systems, ~5 years old) which is why they haven't been affected by increased RAM and storage prices yet. https://greencloudvps.com/billing/store/budget-kvm-sale
They also have "premium" plans which are newer (AMD EPYC Milan Zen 3 or Genoa Zen 4, and PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage in RAID10): https://greencloudvps.com/billing/store/premium-kvm-sale
HostHatch is good too. Their regular pricing aims to compete with Hetzner, but in 13 locations worldwide. https://hosthatch.com/products. They do sometimes have sales on LowEndTalk with pricing similar to GreenCloud's "premium" plans.
RackNerd sometimes have good deals, although they've discontined quite a few of them recently. You can use https://racknerdtracker.com/ to see currently active deals. I still see a 2GB RAM + 35GB storage deal for $35/year for example.
I suspect all the very cheap ones (<$50/year) will eventually increase pricing. GreenCloud and HostHatch own all their hardware. Right now they use older hardware that's already reached break-even, but all hardware needs to be replaced eventually, and the replacement cost for things like enterprise SSDs is a lot higher than it was in the past.
If you want to stick to big names, OVHcloud and Hetzner both have pretty good VPS pricing. OVH runs theirs on very old hardware like Haswell (2014/2015 era) Xeon E5 CPUs which is the main reason why they have cheaper pricing that Hetzner.
There's also AWS Lightsail that's essentially Amazon's version of a VPS. Storage and data transfer are included in the monthly price, unlike EC2 where it costs extra. I'd only use it if you like AWS or want the comfort of using a very big company though - performance is notably worse than a provider like GreenCloudVPS or Hetzner.
I'm not affiliated with any of these companies. This is just my personal experience :)
Thanks for sharing
I forgot to mention - stay far away from SSDNodes. Their prices look good, but they massively oversell their RAM. They use ballooning (
virtio_balloon) to overallocate RAM, and require you to use their customized Linux distro images that have it enabled. Ballooning means that they take unused RAM from your VM and lend it to other VMs to use. If you try to use all your RAM, they shut down your VPS.GreenCloud, HostHatch, and RackNerd all let you install whatever OS you want, by mounting an ISO, connecting to the VPS via VNC, and going through the normal setup process just like you would on a regular computer. They do have pre-built images, but I always prefer to install from my own ISO so I know that the installation doesn't have any non-standard modifications.
Thankfully, most VPS providers don't oversell RAM or disk space.
Hetzner was good for me, but I went all-in on bare metal, with no looking back.
Hetzner recently skyrocketed the pricing of their VPS offerings.
How did you do that, self host? Co-locate?
My guess would be renting a dedicated server, or a home server. It can end up cheaper than colo.
Hosting at home, renting a dedicated server, or colocating are all considered self-hosting.
I may need to do a proper write up on that one, as it’s quite a long story actually. The main thing is, though: it’s hard to believe how actually good modern hardware is. You can do a lot with a Raspberry Pi, not to say Mac mini. Over the decades, I accumulated some old hardware which serves till it would break. And then I’d replace it with similar hardware, I guess. E.g. I have a media server, which is a simple lighttpd web server running on an obsolete Intel Atom computer. It’s slow, but it does its job at serving files. I have old MacBook Pro hosting my Immich library.
All that is rather a self-hosted territory, but I’m pretty confident I can host a production grade stuff off my own hardware. I have been using the cheapest options at DO/Hetzner, so I definitely can host off a maxed out Mac mini or similar.
All that lives at home, or in the office (I am allowed to have some hardware there). I think the main restriction is the gigabit internet… but hey! That’s plenty too!
If I’d ever come to some serious level of hosting, yes, I think I’d co-locate at some data centre. I see very little need in cloud services, as all I need can be done with the bare metal. And it’s so much fun! Feels like magic, seeing an old laptop you’d throw out otherwise, serving as what would be a full-blown server just two decades ago.
Definitely true. The Pi 5 is especially powerful compared to older versions, but it can get kinda expensive once you add things you'd want for a server, like a case, SSD hat, etc.
Ex-office mini and small form factor PCs (Lenovo Tiny/ThinkCentre, HP ProDesk/EliteDesk, Dell Optiplex, etc) can be a better deal than a Pi. In the US at least, you can often find 9th or 10th gen Core i5 systems for less than $150 on eBay. Works great as a server.
A lot of companies have a 3-4 year refresh cycle, after which the hardware is fully depreciated (essentially meaning its value to the company is $0) and they have e-waste companies collect them. The e-waste recyclers test them, refurbish the ones that still work, and list them on marketplaces like eBay.
Unfortunately, where I am, prices aren’t that generous, but I have an unusual interest in very old hardware, so most of my servers can be bought for like $20 or less. Most of them are junk hardware nobody needs. They’re very useful for many cases, especially if we talk self-hosting / personal servers. I bet you can easily serve a small community with a $20 computer. Recently, I started being very picky about power consumption (we have massive blackouts here in Ukraine, due to the Nazi terrorist state, Russia, shelling our civilian infrastructure; but not just that: power efficient hardware is better for the planet), but one thing that isn’t obvious: you can keep the hardware off when unused. It’s trivial to turn it on, or wake up, depending on the use case.
So, if anyone new reading this, I urge you to try this with any spare computer you can find. You may be surprised how good it may work with Linux (server or even desktop).
Their auctioned baremetal servers are a steal
OVH has been reliable and boring afaik
Well, they did have that datacenter burn down a few years ago, so.not entirely boring.
But they've been an otherwise solid provider for me. I've been using their services for years. Started with VPS and now on a bare metal server. Older hardware but great fornwhat i use it for. Been nothing but pleased with them.
Hetzner Cloud
I thought RackNerd had a better deal for me than digital ocean
I'm looking at Linode currently
They're reliable, but overpriced for what you get, especially after the Akamai acquisition. Akamai are not known for affordability :)
Check out Linode, it's easy to use, reasonably priced, and as far as I know, hasn't done anything disgusting.
Only downside is that they were acquired a little while ago by a publicly traded company, so the likwlyhood of enshitification is higher.
Linode? You mean Akamai Connected Cloud?
Whatever their rebrand is these days lol.
Same same, sucks as they seemed neutral but boy do they not seem to care about appearances.
I use Contabo, decent price for a solid VPS. Have only had 12hrs~ of downtime once in the 6 or 8 months I've been a subscriber.
That sounds like terrible reliability. If my home lab had an outage like that I would shut it down as I clearly don't know how to run a dependable system. 😅
You guys! You guys! I heard of this computer program named Wayland and there's this Linux dis-trib-u-tion of it with a sick vampire-looking intro screen. AI! AI YOU GUYS! The same AI that makes flyers for my youtube tech channel. Use it too so we can collectively change the world.
You know Albert the artist?
Damnit, I just spun up a droplet like three days ago.
Also, how much money does it take to add some dot files to arch?
Depends how overtly racist you are apparently
If you ask AI to do all the work, including the smallest little things, I imagine you can burn through a lot of tokens very quickly.
It's like a condensed list of the shittiest of tech people, Sans Google
yeah, google have two OSes they're already holding people captive on.
I can't even get to a boot screen on a family member's chromebook to see if I can replace it with a different OS to ChromeOS. Android is getting demolished as we speak too.
Multiple people mentioned there are on the Epstein list. They probably misheard "kitty exploit" as "kiddy exploit".
If that many evil people/corpos are involved, run as fast as you can the other direction.
Give me community-based distros like Debian, Arch, Mint, etc. I like my Linux democratic, anti-corpo, and inclusive.
My theory is the tech bros and fascists are trying to get "theirs" in on the Linux side before windows completely sinks everywhere but business.
ew gross
wtf is even happening
arch people can't catch a break it's tragic
I'm out of the loop, what's going on? Why is everyone saying this is a bad thing?
Besides DHH being problematic. It's really weird that a vibe-coded OS that is
less thanabout a year old is getting millions of dollars of funding while other critical FLOSS software is constantly underfunded.I didn't known this project was this new, I saw some videos on YouTube about it but it didn't catch my attention so I didn't watch them.
Okay, I verified it, it's actually 14 months old, so I was wrong. But yeah, it's a relatively new project.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Heinemeier_Hansson#Controversy
Thank you.
Welcome.
How many 3 initial techdudes are there?
I only know jwz and DHH
There are RMS and ESR
Ah good, the last bit of motivation i needed to get my final VM off DO.
Wonderful news.
This too shall pass.
Grunge question. I'm very much a surface-level Linux user. But is Omarchy more than just a hyprland rice?
Fascist arch, from what i can tell. Just a bunch of lazy config files on top of arch with as much AI and spyware shoved into it as possible
Omarchy is a Linux distro developed by the guy this article is about.
Well, the "pedophile ring" thing turned out to be mostly true with the Epstein stuff.
thanks for the clarification
Not that I can tell.
Gonna have to set up some time during the weekend to help a friend migrate some infra off DO. To where? Who knows.
I think Omacom is just the small fish "player" wanna-be's trying to do what the big guys are doing with AI. Playing 3 card monte with a few million dollars running the same few bucks around in circles so many times a quarter they all get to make numbers go big on balance sheet in the hopes of getting new real money from idiot "investors" before the FTC (or other regulatory body) wakes up and remembers they are supposed to regulate something occasionally and catches on.
And with that after probably more then ten years of a DO VPS I'm in the process of moving it. Bonus to a Canadian provider.
Shame. I liked digital ocean
another one? again?
that makes me want to set up a DO account just so i can delete it!
Just be sure to take the survey and be clear on why.
and then rinse and repeat, until i get bored ^^
Sooo, are the tech bros just oozing over from the AI bubble (not enough empty promises available anymore?) or is that a symptom for their realization, that the current scam might get busted in the foreseeable future and they want to get in on the next Blockchain / AI / metaverse schmutz, to keep leeching in VC / tax money?
I will get some popcorn...
I dont like Omarcy and DHH but its pretty obvious why hes getting the funding and not other projects. The reason this gets funded and stuff like Gnome and KDE doesnt is because DHH has influence, he isnt a foss purist and he has no bureaucracy holding him back.
No one cares when KDE makes a post trying to drive linux adoption. When DHH does it drives thousands of new linux users. DHH alone can market the distro to new people in a way most foss projects cant.
When a company tries to partner with another project not only do they get very little exposure because the community is small and resistant to advertising but they also often get attacked and purity tested by the users and it generates bad press. When DHH partners with a company his users think its cool and try out the product. It doesnt matter how scummy the company is or if its closed source subscription only.
Investors also see Omachy as something where changes can be made without needing 4 years of arguing with one guy rejecting every change. A fast moving tech focused platform with a good marketer could pull people out of the microsoft apple ecosystem to a place where products can freely compete without entrenched platforms stealing their idea and making their version the default
What if we like Linux stuff because it is hard for corporations to feel good in there
Thats fine. We just ignore Omarcy and hold our upstream projects to account if they start trying to implement omacy features.
It's because he has no real ideals and broken morals
Why does this remind me of the common argument made against democracy and for e.g. China… "it moves fast, less resistance, faster results"…
And yet it's still worse.
The whole argument doesn't hold up either. Your company - or the people behind it, if it's new - just can't be known as the usual profit-driven asshole. I mean, look at how the relations between the Community and Valve is. Nobody would argue Valve being perfect, but they're known not to be the usual assholes and thereby cautiously welcome.
If you or your company can't deal with society being vigilant (especially in capitalism) then they've no place in said society. This vigilance is the only reason Linux still feels made for the user(advanced ones, but still). Fuck anyone who wants to destroy that with means of accelerationism and alike.
DHH and Omarchy are just cultural cancer. What you correctly described is basically one aspect of how unfettered capitalism manipulates people and destroys healthy communities for the sake of growth.
yes but investors and private equity are cancer
Bye Felicia.
Did you not get the mail about them having built in grok?
They love bing an asshole
Meh
Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I've seen in this thread:

This makes users try Omarchy. Users learn about the author and move to a different Linux distribution. All good?
I like the positivity!
I am just trying to understand where the problem is. To me it looks like a way to lure Windows users to Linux. Yes, we all have different opinions but that is exactly what all Linux distros are for. Since Omarchy is open source I don't see a big problem. It is not backed by Google or someone else so there is no monopol here that cant be won.
I just see it as a experiment, showcase, of what can be done and what people actually want. That other distributions can copy and take the good parts from.
I mean, something is fishy when Michael Dell et al dump millions into a particular distro. Could be the AI-forward identity, could be the development of tools with permissive licenses, could be DHH is just rich and good at schmoozing. Hard to say.
Never used it but as far as I understand it’s a curated version of arch Linux with various stuff installed and configured right?
Can’t say I hate the idea if it exposes people to Linux, but don’t see why a base configuration is worth investing in
The pre-installed stuff is also often configured in a way they leaves it with massive security holes.
It's literally this one techbro's personal vibe coded Arch setup. Also, the guy is an all around awful person.
It's a collection of dotfiles and weak defaults. Prioritizing links to chatgpt and Claude over actual functionality
In the 4.x series, reportedly packaging was updated to use a package using standard Arch packaging format.
