I changed the $ in bash to § because fuck capitalism, keep your currency out of my free software

bash uses $ character to indicate variables. for example, you can see your current environment variables with the env command. then to see a specific variable echo $var to print its value.

scripts may call variables for a variety of reasons. one common case would be collecting information from the environment it's running under to determine whether it's compatible.

Oh. Oh yeah, I have done that. Like for adding the date to a file name when I dump a terminal output to into a text file, or adding hit counts to a custom notification after running a scan on a cron job.

I just use the character for that. It's fine, can't win them all, but it's better than having it at the beginning of every command line for seemingly no reason

I'm gonna tie you too the radiator, and grep you in the mouth for decades, and decades, and decades!

The Hammurderer is quickly becoming regarded as the worst-received advertising mascot since Kool-Aid’s 1989 discontinuation of “The Grapist,” a huge purple monster who sodomizes thirsty children.

It's a command line tool, used to search and filter text. According to wikipedia it stands for "global regular expression print", which I never knew til today. Essentially, you give it some input text and a regular expression, and grep outputs all the parts of the input that match the regular expression. For example, if I run the command cat server_logs.log | grep ERROR* on my server, grep will print out all the lines in server_logs.log that have the word "ERROR", filtering out all the "WARN" and "INFO" logs.

* The | character is called a pipe, and it's used to pass the output of one command line utility to another. In this example, the command line tool cat prints out the entire text of the file server_logs.log, and that output is then passed as an input to the next utility, grep, who filters it and outputs the filtered result. Piping is unnecessary in this case; in fact I have heard it rather upsettingly referred to as cat abuse, but that's how my fingers remember how to filter files so I thought I'd present it as I wrote it.

Oh, hahaha. Well, I'm glad you liked it in that case. I've been practicing my hand at writing little impromptu social-media sized explainers for technical concepts, and It's good to get some knowledgeable feedback.

I've always assumed the joke was that it sounded like "grope", and I always thought it was a loose fit for this joke. A bit of a reach, if you will.

Has there been “slave” anywhere for a while? The last time I can think is PATA, which is ancient by now.

It seems like most (all?) uses of “master” these days are in the sense of a “master copy”, which doesn’t really have a “master/slave” dynamic to it.

16

I hear "master" all the time, usually replaced with "main" or "parent". I NEVER hear "slave" unless im in extremely old server bios. It shocked me the first time i saw it, which was around 2017

I don't see the issue but I find Dom/Sub better anyway.

13

USB-OTG should just have been named USB Power Bottom. That makes USB-Type-C the embodiment of a switch.

11

Yeah, I've heard. I've always associated the terms with dom/sub play, not slavery.

I get the reasoning as to why, but it seems odd to me that the IT terms were fixated on, but not the engineering terms; "master" and "slave" are still the accepted terms in the context of hydraulic systems, for example.

It's also generally accepted that "retard" and "retarded" are generally acceptable terms when used in an engineering context. If we can accept that some terms are accepted in the a technical context, it seems inconsistent not to apply the same thinking to IT terminology.

Just more stuff to keep us bickering with each other so we don't look up and realize where all the real problems are coming from, imo.

I use main instead of master on git, but what's the substitute to slave? Especially in master/slave setups like you have 1 processor controlling a bunch of measuring equipment for example.

Master in git is like master record, nothing to do with slaves

It sure is, it's the master branch that rules over all other branches.

Honestly, master/slave sounds so much better. But, well, slavery has been abolished centuries ago in my country, unlike the US

Or the process terminology: "How to kill parent?" "How to spawn child?" "How to terminate zombie child?" Kinda forked if you ask me.

My worst search was "How to kill orphaned child" I didn't even think about how it sounded until I saw it typed out in the search box lol

17

I think the go-to option is an elaborate death trap that will prove to be easily escapable in the next episode.

If the parent was waiting on the child, it is notified of the exit status and the child dies immediately. ~ man exit(3)

It's not, trust me. Now football, that is horny. Tight end, going deep, hand off.

It’s an old lookup tool. I believe it printed the gecos/“meta data about a username logged in” from passwd on UNIX boxes back in the day.

You can do

getent passwd $USER

Look who coined the terms. Like the Silicon Valley stoners/hippies who came up with bit, byte, and nibble.

17

Usually half a byte, 4b, but I think the general definition is half of the word size

11

You used to have master and slave processes too until it was changed to parent and child

I like how the most prominent part of the screenshot is the person explaining the joke in an unfunny way
