Exclusive: Navy weighs renaming carrier slated to honor Black war hero, potentially switching it to Trump

this entire administration is irredeemable scum.

Article is a good read about Miller.

The choice of USS Doris Miller marked the first time an aircraft carrier would honor an enlisted sailor, and the first aircraft carrier to be named for an African American. Asked about his decision to name the carrier after Miller, Modly told CNN that it was recommended to him by a group of retired Black admirals, and that he believes “one of our most powerful warships should bear the name of a sailor like Miller to bring greater attention to what makes our Navy so unique — and great.”

Literally zero mention of racism in this article.

Capitalist media is incapable of calling out explicit racism.

Fash enablers.

MM is pure shite.

They are just another wing of the fascist right.

Alternative media is the only true bastion of truth left.

lemmy.today

When this is over, they need to pass a law that NOTHING can be named after Trump, with one exception: Sewage Treatment Facilities. They will become known as Trumps, and people will say things like "Wow, the Trump really stinks worse than usual today "

9

When this is over,

It'll never be over. Trump is a point on a curve.

The Navy commission came amid broader efforts in the Pentagon under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to remove names selected for what the administration considers diversity, equity, and inclusion purposes.

In other words, Racism.

Funny thing, the anti-DEI people are usually crying that this should be a meritocracy. Don't fill diversity quotas, honour the worthy people, they say.

Let's see here. Should they name the aircraft carrier after a war hero, or the bone spurs guy? Hmm, this is a toughie.

The first US war hero of the second world war. A man who missed out on being awarded the Medal of Honor due to the Secretary of the Navy being racist. Why would they ever name a ship after that guy when they could name one after a draft dodging dodderer instead?

8

Hey! It takes real courage to draft dodge cause you’re rich and believe you are superior to everyone else.

2

Nothing coded about this, I guess.

How often do the Tone Police in the Murc's Law Media scold and chastise the liberals for daring to say the obvious out loud - that the Republican Party is filled with racists and donnie is their favorite guy for this reason?

48

Nothing coded about this, I guess.

Except the CNN article. Gotta break the media code to realize they're talking about racism.

2

The ship is not expected to be delivered until 2034

Why do they bother? It's not like the ship will still be named after Trump by the time it's built even if it's named after him now.

Why do they bother?

To pacify a diaper soiling orange baby. Once out of office, the Trump name is getting dropped like a trud...unless this fascist trend continues.

I have wondered that, does prez know that everywhere his name will be torn down from these buildings, these institutions.

Same with all the money grubbing. He won't be able to spend it all. We know he doesn't even like his kids. That he doesn't care about anything other than himself.

So does he actually believe everyone loves him? He has to know they are patronizing him. Maybe he forgot in his dotage.

Why do billionaires exploit workers to earn money they could never spend in their lifetime? At some point it's about control, in addition to a high score. A mental illness, if you will...

4

I think it's a competition thing too. They are trying to one up each other, whomever dies with the most money wins i guess.

Money is their only end. Everything they do politically is to further the accumulation of wealth. Not a single one has a moral or scruple that takes precedence over their money grubbing.

2

It's just a way to jerk off that POS blob of orange mayonnaise.

While simultaneously he shits on that one boat with an unreasonable duration at sea, he steals the glory of an actual solier, and still finds a way to stroke his own ego while he's at it. Not to mention the cost at tax payers expense of whatever bureaucratic ripples this sends out.

He's going to die. They're going to uncover truly horrific things of unprecedented scope, and then to save face they're going to paint him as some sort of mastermind. I'm going to have to grow old and die myself as they contort Turnip's career as some sort of Machiavellian genius, when in fact he has all the nuances of a screeching adolescentwith a negative kill ratio on counter strike. They will build the myth to preserve the institution, but I'll never forget how brazen and clumsy he was or how complicit are the people warming themselves on the flaming wreckage he leaves in his wake.

I've long now made the point that although I knew fascism would come with a flag in one hand and a bible in the other, and in our lifetimes, I never dreamed it would be so fucking stupid.

I imagined more calculating and rational evil leaders. After seeing this, now I am starting to wonder if like hitler and stalin were also a lot dumber than I give them credit for.

20
Triashareply
lemmy.world

Stalin got his start in the bolshevik party as a fundraiser. He robbed banks. Not with a stick up, not with safe cracking. He would roll up with a team, throw some grenades into the building, run in as the dust settled, grab the cash, then throw grenades around dthr Street the cover the getaway.

Stalin was a crazy dumbass willing to kill dozens of innocents for money.

Hitler was an Incel. His college roommate told the world about how he obsessed over a young woman for months, said they were fated to be together, but never got the courage to speak to her.

He carried a horsehip everywhere and hit people that passed him off.

He made people call him "Herr wulf" (Mr wolf) as a badass nickname. This is why his bunker in Berlin was called the wolf's lair.

They were absolutely fucking stupid.

Source: early episodes of Behind the Bastards podcast.

9

Don't forget how Hitler was obsessed with the equivalent of Harry Potter at the time. He completely believed the self-insert author actually possessed wonder weapons from the books. Hitler even insisted on using military strategies from the books in some offensives depite the author having no military background.

BCsvenreply

I don't know about the wolf part, but the term Herr was/is super common when referring to somebody male. Not only does it mean Mr or sir, its part of German etiquette to use that term. Like how Japanese add San to a persons name to show respect. Hitler would not need to insist people call him Herr, its just how he would be referred to.

1
Triashareply
lemmy.world

My understanding is Herr is an honorific, totally normal. Herr wulf is the equivalent of a 22 year old me saying "Call me Mr Blade."

It's cringe so hard it should be lethal.

1
BCsvenreply
lemmy.ca

That's how people interpret it now, after the fact, but it is much more likely he was referencing his own first name which is based on old German name Athalwolf.

As well as influence of Wolfgang being a very popular German name. (I had some german friends choose Wolfgang as their nicknmame, instead of their boring anglicised names).

We are trying to look at Herr Wolf through English terms, and I'm not sure it is totally accurate. As Athalwolf carries the meaning of nobility, and less about wolves.

Please don't take this as me defending Hitler, he was a fragile ego man, who did horrible things and wanted to be omnipotent.

I am just skeptical when later analysis might try to fit a certain narrative.

Ha ha ha, I will have to check it out thanks.

Still though, our guy is dumber, but maybe just because he's a decrepit old dotard.

Side note as to the horsewhipping on the street, reminds me of Ivan the Terrible, Russia's old Tsar. He used to go on the streets in plainclothes and cut peoples' beards off just for the lulz. Forget what year he was.

2

The young woman Hitler stallked didn't know he existed. She found out about the crush decades later. He thought she was secretly communicating her love for him via qanon esqe codes like the color of her scarf or where she stopped to eat a pastry.

He was a complete incel buffoon, (obviously not later with Eva Braun, but as a young man) and part of reason he was declared chancellor was they thought he couldn't do much harm.

6

Stupid is so much worse because it's unpredictable

5

I completely agree. It's like the main thing that bothers me about it, and the fact that people actually believe and fall for this obvious bullshit.

5

Sure feels like it sometimes to me, it's like whatever the opposite of a miracle is called that he made it anywhere close to 80.

2

This would tactically would be Ill-advised , it would face threats abroad and domestic. Anyone working with the vessel would automatically have a moral debuff, thus increasing likelihood of poor maintenance and slower resupply. In addition, it would become a political target of other nations more frequently, delaying refueling and resupply abroad.

The other comments have other very good reasons not to do this but from a cold logical tactical standpoint it is also ill-advised.

So, uh, you keep saying you support our veterans, but when are you actually going to start?

14
lemmy.ml

honestly fuck vets and Trump. I’m tired of pretending American vets should be celebrated. Veterans not Veterinarians

5
lemmy.world

It's seems like a weird fetish Americans have. Most places wouldn't be any more likely to say "Thank you for your service" to a pizza delivery person then former armed service personnel. It's like, you had a job, you chose to do it, and now you're doing something else. What's the big deal?

6

Its probably so vets don't feel bad about all the unjust oil based wars and government toppling they do as part of their service.

4

I used to rock a flat top haircut, when living in the mid-south people regularly offered to buy me a beer to thank me for my service. They were often put off if I told them I never served. I switched to asking they write their representatives to improve the VA if they really wanted to thank vets.

BigPotatoreply

Honestly, it's a job that comes with an implicit "you are worth less than our objectives and your life will be risked if we deem it." No OSHA, no safety regulations (well, militaries have their own regulations...) Get in the barely tested hardware and determine if it'll protect you from a bomb. Also, if you disagree, we'll put you in jail or jack up your life.

That said, countries need armies. Where would Ukraine be if they decided to disarm for security agreements that were then quickly violated? And what if that foe was actually competent?

But, like, post-Vietnam, Americans should've realized they weren't the good guys. It's a shame new people keep getting born and don't realize the whole history of their country...

2

Yeah, unfortunately countries do have to have armies. humans still are not really all that civilised when it comes down to it. I could be wrong, but I get the impression a lot of Americans do it for training and education they couldn't get elsewhere

3
lemmy.dbzer0.com

"Thank you for your service" has always just meant "look what a great American I am". It's just a shallow performance of self-righteousness, like almost everything we do here.

3

This is so true. I have tried my entire life to vote advocate for NOT starting wars. That's what actually honors / helps veterans.

Republicans love to spew this patriotic bullshit, while sending them to die to line the pockets of oil companies and weapons manufacturers.

And while we're at it, military overwhelming votes Republican.... So yea... Kinda leopards type situation

2

The big deal to me is they signed up for a job that kills and rapes kids, people, and is directly responsible for the industrial complex of killing brown people and kids. They should have adequate shelter and food and water like everyone else but should be shunned by society just like all US military members and vets. Like prison isn’t enough for these psychos but I don’t believe in capital punishment.

1
lemmy.world

Can these idiots just not say “no” to him? I’m pretty tired of seeing news articles that are the kind of thing that Trump jerks off to.

21

They all want in on the grift. Not only are they getting fame (or infamy) and power they haven’t earned but many of them are exploiting the same corruption. Look at how wealthy the turnip kids are now, based on misuse of government authority

4

He fires them if they do. I figure if someone in their family relies on them for healthcare, they have to play ball.

6
lemmy.world

How the military puts up with this draft dodger astounds me. I get he’s their “boss” but my god how embarrassing.

18

They've already said pretty much everything he's named after himself was done illegally and needs to be removed. They're just trying to figure out the enforcement mechanism since the sc said not while a president is sitting.

8
feddit.org

At least it would be named after a colored person.

12

Maybe just take his name off the buildings and boats. It may feel good, but I can feel the Moses memes coming from here.

Let the name be stricken from every book and tablet. Stricken from every pylon and obelisk. Let the name be unheard and unspoken, erased from the memory of man, for all time. AI slop image of Trump parting the sea while an angel bangs an eagle overhead

No thank you

5
sh.itjust.works

They’re gonna have reinstate the draft to maintain the military

7

Not really. They keep the people poor and everything expensive. The military is literally the only way out of poverty for some folks. Which essentially makes it socialism.

It's all going to the machines as we speak. It will take some time but it is progressing fast since Ukraine.

1

Yeah it's all about harvesting money from the federal government.

We have all the wrong people in charge, ancient writer plutarch in his 'Lives,'1st century book that compared and contrasted a similarly placed greek and roman notables made the point that people like antiochus, (a Selucid (greek general that took from persia to the levant to part of asia minor after Alexander's death,) a king that tried to unite the greek states as Alexander had done, saw Money as the End in itself, while the Truly Great see money as a means to an end.

Antiochus refused to hire all of these badass mercenaies from north of the Danube, fierce barbarians, because they demanded gold up front. He instead encamped to the Hot Gates of the famous Leonidus' last stand against the persian hordes centuries prior, made a palisade and deployed his hopilites.

Cato, I think the elder, of the romans knew the story of leonidas too as everyone did then, and they found the goat trail to bring them to the hills overlooking the gates. Threw a bunch of rocks while they charged down, Antiochus took one to the teeth and bleeding profusely sped off on his horse and his army routed.

Anyway that long aside aside, while people like Alexander and Julius saw money as a means to an end, the antiochus' and our leaders believe in nothing other than self advancement. Too greedy to achieve anything great.

USA would have attacked Iran with slightly different boat names. Hooray democracy!

0

Yes I'm totally sure a Democrat who never attacked Iran and didn't start the majority of wars in the past 30 years and who extensively campaigned alongside the former president who also didn't attack Iran but instead established an unprecented and successful diplomatic deal to avoid just that totally would have... ;)

There is precedent for naming ships after living US presidents, but in both cases, the person had been out of office for years and had served in the Navy aboard the type of ship that bears their name.

  • USS Jimmy Carter: An attack submarine commissioned in 2005. Carter was a nuclear technician with the Navy in the early days of nuclear submarines, and died in 2024
  • USS George H. W. Bush: an aircraft carrier commissioned in 2009. Bush was flew torpedo bombers in WWII and died in 2018
