Moth/lamp/beans/jeans memes are unfunny spam

I find these types of posts to not contain anything funny at all. It doesn't become more fun because everyone is spamming it.

I really don't get the fun. It just fills my feed up with garbage.

That's all.

I mostly just think it’s weird Lemmy acts like it came from here but it’s just a crusty meme from the earlier internet. Dusty bitch hours in here

I think the "joke" is dumb AF and I don't like it. But I really like the phenomenon where people get together and start shitposting with a certain theme. It brings people together, creates a sense of community and encourages posting. This is something Lemmy very much needs.

I feel like a lot of (especially new) Lemmings are like the dogs that don't want to give up the ball, no give only throw. Lemmy needs to grow and expand. If everyone forces it to be something it isn't it will die.

Yeah, I get the community and getting together over some common theme, but when the theme is not funny and completely pointless, that just feels like spam to me.

You should start posting some frivilous meme to express your discontent with copious amounts of frivilous memes. I dbl dog dre you.

23

Here's the advantage of being easily amused: You're amused a lot more often. Anyway, there's not much to "get," it's a harmless way that people use to signal that they are in and feel part of a community, like the rubber duck thing for Jeep drivers, or Swifties.

Not everybody has to like it, or participate. I would just point out the Frequency Illusion, a.k.a. the red light effect, where it seems a lot more prevalent because you emphatically notice it.

It's valid as pointless dumb fun, just whimsy for its own sake. It's a matter of survival really, on some level. If everything's serious, nothing ends up mattering sooner or later anyway. You go numb. A little frivolity can be a way to stay grounded and keep feeling things.

I mean I'm all for dumb fun, but I am having a hard time finding the fun in these pointless "memes".

A good shitpost can be really dumb, but still fun. It has some point, or irony, or whatever.

The bean-category of "memes" are more pointless than they are fun. Closer to spam than memes.

Not trying to rob anyone of their enjoyment though, but I don't enjoy it :)

Dude we got to get you in a museum of modern art. Study Warhol, Dada, shit like that. Make you really use your bean

Yeahy Möth and Lämp posting helped me keep a shred of sanity while my city mas engulfed in carcinogens from the cascading environmental collapse that much too few people seem to actually give a fuck about.

Haven't seen any Jëän posting.

The beans were a distraction from the tessarekt debacle tho.

5

Just bring in more Bats, Light Switches, British, and Scissors memes to counter them

I agree on the jeans and beans bullshit, that was easily the most cringe shit since rage comics and haha, le funny le reddit catchphrases. DAE LE NARWHAL HEHEUHEUHEUHEUHEH anyway. The moth thing at least had some kind of life as a meme, as far as I know.

The fedv has a lot of shit going on that's most easily explained as "activity at any cost" and/or a userbase that doesn't understand what makes stuff funny or not funny in the same way as the rest of the internet - probably somewhat worse than Reddit during the rage comic era. And straight up spam, which I suspect for a lot of political "memes": yes haha we sure are very angry at all the things that get very legitimately posted here on the fediverse. By people who are very people and real. Which, while fair enough in some ways, unfortunately leaves the political alleged humor with a comedy content that's completely undetectable. There was a brief blip of, ahem, actual memes around "certain events" that were the sort of thing people meme about, *cough cough*, and then it's right back to shit that makes the 1950s comics look funny. (That Garfield is so wacky!!, I laugh every time. Lasanga.)

But at least FOMO is not really an issue, more like Profound Relief At Missing Out.

I have a real unpopular opinion that memes are not really all that great as a topic itself and I block all the meme posting communities so they are not in my feed.

You should have seen when corn memes were the big thing. Had to block some communities for that week

These beans hasn't bean ba dum tss bad enough for me to start blocking again, but you are free to do so

4

I think I've seen the corn ones as well. Wasn't a fan then either 😅

Downvoted because I agree. Sometimes there’s an actual good joke, but the majority of them are too samey.

At least with things like loss or rickrolling, there’s fun to be had in the tricking someone/being tricked into a silly punchline, like with dad jokes, but there’s not really enough setup for much payoff in the beans/jeans/moth/lamp memes.

It popped up again to take heat off the tesseract noise, I’m absolutely convinced. It’s used as air cover to drown out topics they don’t like

Isn't it ironic that people both tell me to just juse post filters AND explain bean memes as something to drown out topics they don't like?

Why don't the bean crowd just filter out the tesseract controversy with some simple keywords then?

Feels like double standards.

I agree filters is the right response to content you aren't interested in seeing. And I have set up these filters now.

I do NOT like the sentiment of posting garbage to "drown out topics you don't like". That sounds childish, spammy amd malicious.

4

“just filter it” means the user doesn’t want to see it

Drowning with noise posts prohibits OTHERS from seeing it

It all makes sense if you consider the shitweasels involved

I have no real answers, but it could be that shitposting is something some use to decompress a situation. Like when two family members are heating up a pointless holiday argument and it starts to get awkward for those around them, so people make dumb jokes in an attempt to diffuse the situation. Then others may "change the topic" filling any dead air with even nonsense or something people don't overtly care about but it helps avoid the actual issue at hand. Which could assist those family members taking a step back and cooling off or maybe it allows them to not address the underlying issue and there will be underlying resentment in the relationship for a few decades.

Another alternative that the person above you may have meant, is that people don't want this space to die because some bad actors. If the main focus is that bad act, then people are more likely to drift away...

One can only guess

I get both arguments, but the first one would be like saying

"I don't tvink this is a fun read so I'm going to make everyone else watch low quality "memes".

More or less making a desicion for others that they shouldn't wamt to see this either by spamming.

The other argument would be a in good faith, and I get it. Ypu don't want this space to die. But this wasn't a threat to the space, it was an opportunity of community self-governance. One bad actor did bad stuff and people called them out for it. That actually makes the community stronger and more transparent.

Bad news isn't fun, but not knowing what's going on at all would be worse.

Lemmy could use more content as a counter to the low quality spam, be the change you want to see

3
hankereply

I'm doing my part 🫡

But personally I believe a lower volume of good quality content is better than a high volume of garbage.

3

Yeah, so? As I was saying, I'm doing my part :)

i'm saying you're reacting from a deep, personal wound because i missed your shoepost and couldn't give you good advice. (i am so sorry). for sandals you want treadlabs (the chacos guy went there after VC fucked up chaco, and my 2nd year of the company pair of chacos lasted 25 years) and i only wear børns. those tend to last me 10-15 years a pair. can't resole the børns, but the comfort makes up for it.

1

I'm over the moths, but other people are here to have fun too. So I ignore them. More bean memes please!

FYI: Some platforms/apps have a filter function that you can block words/phrases.

And last but not least, you could be trapped on twitter and subjected to nazis all day. Post your own funny memes if you don't like what's on the menu.

i’ll take dumb moth memes over yet another american posting about their damn politics tbh

I don't mind USians posting about their shitty government as long as they realise that not everyone is a USian - those cunts are the worst.

I'm absolutely done with it, Lemmy is so overwhelmed with Americans that literally any post featuring America gets upvoted

Kills me
