I started writing because I read a story that had a cool concept and characters, but wasn't polished. It seemed like a rough draft. I was so frustrated by it, I re-wrote it. I did the same for another story, and then I started writing my own stories.
I enjoy writing, especially that wondrous moment when my characters start talking to me, telling me where I've made a mistake--that they very much would not say what I just wrote. But, I'm not very good at it.
@DarrinBrunner It sounds like you may enjoy some form of editing ๐
Working on a massive epic fantasy type thing. There is a plot, but I find in enjoying characters just talking to each other and developing more than the actual frickin' plot.
@Rivermoonwolf I'm in the epic fantasy business as well, but I feel like I should've choseen another business ๐
Is that you, James Cameron?
@fletcher_bosom Yes ๐

Building a coherent and entertaining plot is a skill that, like any other skill, needs to be trained and practiced to be good at.
Go to the writing prompt communities. Pick a prompt every day to reply to. Those are ready-made plots for your writing practice.
I got plots for days, I struggle with formatting the story.
Anyone want to co-write?
Hell, I'd pay cash money
@bizarroland I'm sure you can find editors more than willing to help you with that...
Am I wrong in assuming that you have to have basically written the story before you hire an editor?
Because my issue is, like, I don't know how to take the idea for the story in my head and translate that to written format.
I guess I don't need a co-writer. What I need is a style guide, that shows
"I'm going to write conversations in this format"
"I'm going to write descriptive passages in this format."
"My chapters will cover this specific branch of storyline"
But even figuring out that is rough.
I need someone to show me the right way to do things.
Should I just pick my favorite book and duplicate what they do?
@bizarroland Well, I think there are diffrences, I'm no expert but developmental editing seems like the kind of thing you're looking for, or perhaps a ghost writer if you're rich ๐
