I made my own doomsday gaming stick. A one terabyte HP 911 pro stick filled with all sorts of games that are plug and play, all neatly categorized. I had an idea to start making copies and selling them on dark web markets, but honestly not worth the risk.

52

I might reevaluate my risk assessment and consider including other media. It's right in there with weed in terms of both risk and reward, in that you'll probably have fun/make a lot of people happy but definitely still need other means of support. There's a guy doing exactly what you're talking about at pretty much every educational institution for starters, and the risk is essentially being told to stop

6

What are some of the highlights on the stick? Are you going you make us wait until the world ends? The suspense is killing me!

Maybe you're already aware, but even digital storage decays over time, both SSD and HDD. Granted, it's a decently long time, but worth keeping in mind for an "In case of Apocalypse" media storage device.

GOG exists. You can literally buy games DRM free online and for the same price as on Steam.

Games aren't like movies. You can own the games you buy if you're willing to put in the effort.

5

I got so many offline installers from gog and it feels so good. I don't have to worry about a game disappearing on me or getting a patch that ruins mod compatibility years after release. And even if my internet goes down it's available.

6

That's why you verify your setup without a network connection before declaring the project complete. Amateurs.

It's fine, he's got the generator inside, he'll die from carbon monoxide in like an hour.

Youre staring at a rectangle, reading a post left by another human being, or perhaps a robot. Some of the text is blue. You find yourself drawn towards it. If your thumb makes contact you might find yourself watching a clip of...The Scary Door.

34

This is a masterful post. No notes.

Well, one note. Apparently that link triggered a "we detected unusual activity from your computer" page that I had to click through. But honestly, that makes it even funnier.

Genny just running in an enclosed space?

Won't have to worry about no internet for that long then

59

Maybe he's running an absolutely stupid overbuilt ventilation system

Nah it's a good way to go before you run out of water.

21

All this doomsday prep and he couldn't be bothered to buy games from GOG before the nukes fell? Oh well, deserves it for trusting DRM launchers HA

*laughs in DRM*

Just because a game is single player doesn't mean squat these days. If your computer cannot connect to server to authenticate the license at least periodically then you're fucked.

Unless you pirate or get it from GOG or other DRM-free sources. Steam DRM is at least indefinite so long as you have launched the game at least once though.

32

Yeah i wouldn't know i dont play any games that require login to play singleplayer, if i buy one without realizing on steam it's an instant refund and uninstall

11

Anyone who hoards for a doomsday event would pirate every piece of digital media.

I've heard that devs can disable steams DRM haven't looked into it though, safer to just go with GOG when possible. Also why I haven't gotten slay the spire 2 yet

Burning a gas generator inside a bomb shelter? At least he won't have to live with his disappointment for long.

Why not opt for a solar panel and power bank combo?

25

Could be diesel or propane either way wouldn't have been hard to design a box for it to sit in so that the fumes could still go outside.

After an apocalypse like that it's unlikely that solar or wind would be very viable it would most likely be nuclear winter so that would stop both as solar is not going to get any sunlight and a windmill is going to require excessive maintenance to stay functional in that.

The better bet would still be battery bank but battery bank with generator that way you're not just wasting electricity since a generator is a demand-based response but still uses a set amount of fuel no matter what just to run you use the generator to charge up the battery Bank and then use the batteries only turning on the generator when they need to recharge

Maybe that way he'll die before the back pain from the beanbag chair gets him.

6

Meh, it expires as far as it's not good for your car anymore and gets the engine dirty, but in this case you just steal another car nobody around who cares if the car breaks down in 1,000 miles

Ollama is separate from Wikipedia database I downloaded. Ollama is just a different thing and something to interact with. There's very little synergy other than Wikipedia being source for ollama models claim

That's where the classics come in. Original FF7, the Metal Gear series, Burnout, Republic Commando. Hoard classics and you'll never be bored.

I tried to play classic ff7 on steam the other day and it booted up a windows 98-era mandatory square enix login portal ☠️

My favorite part if the Steam versions is they don't work with most controllers.

"You're entering a show that is slightly different from previous, very similar shows. What was once a creepy story about a book is now about an e-reader that's too greasy to hold. And that one phone call from the devil? Now it's a FaceTime call from the devil. The devil part didn't change. Prepare to see your unflattering reflection in…The Scary Mirror."

2

You must also remember to download Ghidra and debugging tools haha

12

Eh there are enough good offline games that you could download through GOG that you wouldn't be able to finish in a life time. Which reminds me time to download all my games to a harddrive, you never know.

And yet there are many games that despite offering offline play still require an internet connection or require online download.

"Enshittification is the consumers fault" is one way to see it but I'd rather put the blame on other parties, like the ones actually making the decision.

5

The ones that make the decision not to require online verification dont make as much money and they have bills to pay. There are publishers making all sorts of decisions, the consumers decide which ones they give their money to.

Clearly you have never played a Ubisoft game from the last decade. :P

I haven't played them and it's but choice. There are plenty of great games without their bullshit.

Not much today, at least not with the expensive / interesting stuff. And you'll have to live with the bugs and crashes, as nobody will fix the betas they are selling as products today.

Depends how you define interesting. Out of all the games I have there is just one where I must have an Internet connection to play. Others only need it to update.

Thank you! This is my pet peeve. "Gaming sucks these days". No, the games you play, the companies you give your money suck. There are plenty of good games. Supporting toxic companies is a choice they are making.
