Because I missed the niche that reddit filled and I wasn't willing to return to reddit or any other corporate, centralised social media/community platform.

27

It wasn't just that. I used the first party app so the API changes didn't affect me. It was how bad they handled the whole situation that made me lose faith that reddit was going in a good direction. That thread "addressing" the changes and concerns was brutal.

5

Yup. I still miss my rif app. It just felt like such a bad decision. Especially limiting NSFW. I needed to try something else.

1

I HATE REDDIT CENSORSHIP, seriously, it's a weird politically biased censorship, you need to constantly adjust what you have to say/not say at all depending on the sub-reddit, leads to idiotic echo-chambers and self-righteous people who are just in a bubble, idk

1
lazysoci.al

Reddit killed third party apps and I refused to use their shit app. It all just stinks of enshitification. So I spun up my own instance of Lemmy and haven't looked back.

You seem like a high initiative individual. Congrats. I lack technical sophistication to even buy a domain name lol. How much do you pay for lazysoci.al per year (the domain name)?

3

It's about £10 a year. I'm lucky though as I run a small side business which has some hosting capabilities. So there is already an enterprise grade set of servers ready to deploy Lemmy. I don't need to look for hosting costs or be worried about performance as the servers are paid for and are top spec.

1

because centralized social media eventually leads to ads/monetization etc. your content becomes for profit

13
lemmy.org

Reddit ban for a R1 violation.

Apparently if you say punching a nazi is a form of self-defense they'll say you're inciting violence.

12

fuck that, we need guns to enforce our rights, even communists know that. I mean whatever.

1

I finally got banned from Reddit and by now they have rather effective methods to detect ban evasion.

10

I've tried to make a couple of anonymous throwaways (for privacy reasons - I've never been banned) and they vanish pretty quickly, seemingly as soon as I share a link. Yes, even when not using a VPN.

2

That is sooooo annoying! Like, ok ban my account. But ban ME for ever? Ridiculous. Sincerely hope Reddit dies

2

Corporative social media pushed me out, ActivityPub seems a great solution to those problems.

Then Reddit and Communism

9
lemmy.zip

Reddit's bot detection bot banned me for being a bot. The irony was too much.

9

Because Reddit is a haven for power tripping white supremacists who ban any opinion they don't like.

9

Because reddit shut its api access off and "rif is fun for reddit" stopped working, duh.

7
lemmy.zip

I got perma banned from reddit.

I am not sure why. It could have been because I got 200+ downvotes for posting that Guy Ritchie’s Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare looked like a steaming pile of dog shit or because I posted that Pete Hegsbeth needs to die.

Anyway I deserved the Perma Ban.

The only thing I miss about reddit are the sports subs. Those were a lot more active than the ones on lemmy/fedverse.

7
greenbeltreply
lemy.lol

sports subs

idk iam not that interested in sports, hate sports betting btw. This shows how there are many different niche interests that can not be served by lemmy

2

There is no reason the sports instances cant be busy on lemmy.

5
lemmy.zip

Because I got perma banned from Reddit after making a comment that all these ICE losers will never get paid or will get their sign on bonus. And that after 3 years they will be back sucking immigrant cock behind the Wendy's. Apparently that is violation of rule 1 inciting violence. Which is total BS. Other people post much, much worse and actually death threats. Reddit definitely also bend the knee to the US authoritarian regime and any view other than nazisme is banned.

Anyway lemmy feels a much more positive place here except the formula 1 lemmy. That sub is so incredibly toxic.

6
lemmus.org

Same, broke R1 and the last breaking of it was rather vague link. I just upvoted a comment that made fun of R1 under a post showing child abuse. Turns out that goes under it as well.

3
obamacaresreply
lemmy.ml

You got banned from Reddit for making an upvote? No freaking way

2

I was on my last warning, maybe they ramp up scrutiny then or they have just ramped it up recently.
But yeah that was the post that was linked when they gave the reason for a ban and It was rather fast as well. Less than few minutes after upvoting. I was still in that thread trying to explain other person what R1 was.

Did you get banned from a subreddit or from the entire Reddit?

1
stumu415reply
lemmy.zip

Entire Reddit because it's run by right-wing cry bitches. I almost wanted to say Fuck u/Spez.

2

nooo way!!! I hate that! I wish there were LAWS protecting people from being banned from websites, this is ridiculous the amount of power these corporations have to limit free speech. We're not in 1820 anymore, free speech isn't just talking with our physical voices — our digital voices are almost as important

1

I just want to see less bots and find real community and conversations. I also love the concept of decentralized platforms. I feel like the Internet mostly isn't even real. I miss what it was like 15+ years ago.

I'd already heard of Mastodon and based on poking around there, I learned about Lemmy, so I explored it as a Reddit alternative. Initially, my early exposure to lemmy was mostly a curiosity thing.

Also during that time, my resentment and distaste for Reddit's policies and general culture was building up. The place had changed so much over the years, just slowly enough that it took awhile to notice that it was no longer the same place it was when I first arrived.

I ended up coming to Lemmy in the months ahead of the Reddit API fiasco, but would still peek over there from time to time. Then post API fiasco, I just stopped even peeking.

In those days, Lemmy was a largely KIND place, so that really helped the transition. The culture here was different from Reddit, and seemed much more positive and supportive at that time, so that made it easier to look past the flaws. It was a regular occurrence to see folks call out users who were being abusive or overly abrasive in their replies, and folks would often talk out or joke about their differences. It was a nice, refreshing change of pace most of the time.

That's almost all gone now or perhaps hidden on some private or unbeknownst to me server somewhere in the Fediverse. But for me, for now, I'm still here. I just had to adapt. Basically I mostly stopped reading replies to my comments and just block people I see being abusive to others, but this also means Lemmy is now a sad, dead echo of its not too distant past and more of an opportunity to fart into the winds of oblivion.

5

My instance and Beehaw still have that earlier friendliness (IMO, at least).

The threadiverse has gotten a bit more hostile since then, but on the whole I still find it pretty friendly, with many pleasant convos and sharing of useful info, but perhaps that's just the places I visit here.

1

Trying to understand someone I adore who prefers Lemmy. Also, Reddit feels overrun with fake accounts and scammers.

5

Banned from Reddit for writing lyrics to my favourite Christmas song because it had a homophobic slur in it and mods don't understand when it was written, who it was written by/about/sung by whom, it's vulgarity in other countries culture and/or context - heaven forbid any of them get meatballs from a chip shop or buy cigarettes in the UK.

And then ban evasion during that time. I prefer the lack of bots and reposts (except the Reddit repost bots) here though.

5

I was already no longer posting on reddit through alternative front-ends since around 2018, because I disliked privacy issues with it. I was just lurking via alternate frontends (the precursors to Redlib, there were more before the API fiasco). I was already into the FOSS community and so I forget exactly how I came across Raddle and Lemmy (maybe through /r/piracy or /r/datahoarder, but could have been many other places), and Lemmy was far far far slower then, but when I landed on Lemmy I really wanted it to become a viable alternative to reddit.

5

Reddit destroying third party apps was the last straw for me. So, I hopped on kbin and some Lemmy instances. Reddit continues to degrade, and Reddit mods are annoying.

RIP Aaron Swartz (Reddit removed him as a founder).

4

As a better alternative to what I was using prior (Reddit and other stuff). Came to Lemmy.ml as it seemed like a good generalist option whose top categories include open source programs and technology, to which I've enjoyed reading further into.

Additionally, I didn't know Lemmygrad exists, however I'm super glad it does. I regularly browse it, and through doing so, I've corrected several misconceptions I had held prior, gotten even more insights into history, put together a reading list to finally delve deeper (which I need to keep reminding myself to start), and I've renewed efforts to try to find a way to organize.

4

First set of accounts on reddit perma banned for discussing jiujitsu technique - inciting violence.
Second set of accounts on reddit perma banned for recommending a lady with a stalker problem use her American freedom and get a gun for home defense - You know what you did type response.

I was already on Lemmy when my subs shut down to protest the API blackout.

4

I wanted to keep using Boost, and they banned third party applications from Reddit.

Especially annoying given that their own application was awful and at times unusable with whole features completely missing.

3
lemmy.sdf.org

Got banned from reddit for saying that Peter Thiel should be turned into soup 3 times.

3
Greyscalereply
lemmy.sdf.org

The best bit is it went like this:

  • "peter theil should be turned into soup"
  • "th-iel should be turned into soup"
  • "I got 2 warnings because I suggested Peter Theil be turned into soup like a bit in loony tunes"

And lo, 15+ year account into the bin, and reddit along with it.

1
greenbeltreply
lemy.lol

you deliberately miss-spelled peters name but where still punished (by a bot?) ???

2

Yup. And the third time was discussing policy in context, really.

The difference between saying something and a newspaper publishing that something was said.

1

I was finally permabanned for a message I'd posted many times without anyone blinking. Then Trump gets elected, and it's a permaban offense.

1

Was thinking of trying something like Reddit. And I never imagined I would like a platform this much... And I'm also glad that I came to Lemmy instead of using Reddit

3

I'm looking at other people's reasons for reddit bans and i kinda understand why they were. I dont agree with them, and most of them are stupid and heavy handed and are mean-spirited applications of the letter of a rule while blatantly ignoring the meaning, but they are technically justifiable.

I got banned for saying Genji mains suck.

2

The sex , drugs and rock n roll !

Discovered way to late there was a decentralized version of Reddit and I had to join

2

came to lemmy because I am too dump/stupid for reddit xD their UI blocks me from actually using their product

1

Because after 12 years on Reddit, and nearly a million Karma, I was permabanned in the post-Inauguration bloodbath.

My feeling toward Lemmy are mixed. I really miss certain non-political subs, like guitar subs, and animal subs. OTOH, the political forums are much livelier on Lemmy, and you don't have to worry nearly as much about suspensions and bans.

And Reddit was getting flooded with stupid bots, puns, novelty accounts, spam, and Russian Karma Farmers. It would get particularly bad during election years. I bet it's a mess over there right now, and it's only going to get worse.

Edit: How do I get downvoted for that? The question was why I came to Lemmy, and I said why. You downvote someone for truthfully answering a question? I didn't realize that it better be good reason, or else.

1

Banned for many reasons, but the last one was for saying all religion are bad.

Just didn't feel like making yet another alt to be banned.

1

Got banned from Lemmygrad
because I'm not a US progressive,
as I'm not pro-US unless the country is given back the land to the indigenous people.

wanted reddit from 10+ years ago when it was a smaller more chill site more interesting in being nerdy and curious than being political grandstanding. used to be such a fun place to kill time and learn cool shit and read interesting stories. it was glorious until 2016 and started going downhill rapidly, IME. I was first banned from reddit in 2020 for 'inciting violence' by talking about my cat hunting rabbits. thought it was insane, and a few months later I was randomly unbanned. OK. Stopped using it in '22 entirely as I constantly being reported for random comments as 'racism, violence, hate speech' when I was often pointing out those behavior and attitudes.

fediverse cool at first but now it's rapidly growing into another reddit with a ton of people here who are just to be crappy and spam their weird agendas and go around endlessly self promoting themselves and hating on anyone who isn't like them. it's increasingly just a site for people to dump their insanity and delusions and seek validation for doing so. I have blocked so many people in the past few months it's insane, my block list is 100s now, and in '25 it was maybe a dozen.

That said there are still some pretty good thoughtful threads on here about various issues, usually for the first few hours they are up, but once they get some traction the crazies come out to harass anyone remotely thoughtful and call them names. I've seen some wonderful empathetic and compassionate discussions get completely derailed by shitheads, who also mod-report these thoughtful and interesting things as 'hate speech' because it doesn't align with their simplified black or white view of the issue, and their missions is simple to shut down any discussion that isn't a catchphrase or other bumper sticker takes by calling it hate speech, just like my comment about my cat killing rabbits was 'animal abuse'.

dumb people ruin everything because they basically throw a tantrum when they can't fit the square object into the round hole and declare that the square space must therefore be a hateful bigot, because all the world must be round holes and only things that fit through them should be allowed to exist.
