We need some new (a couple) of general-use instances to help direct this traffic! Piefed.social will help you and redirect traffic to you.

PieFed.co.za is hosted in Germany

It's kinda geared towards South Africans, but it'll be a place where anyone is welcome. I still need to do some housekeeping though.

I really love that you're building a South African instance!

As much as the influx of Europeans to the fediverse is lovely to see, the European/North American bias here is really striking. That's of course not a problem of too many Europeans, but rather not enough other people.

18

Thanks, it's quite fun to setup and run an instance and helping the community grow. Hopefully I can get a bunch of South African and Africans to join my instance.

But anyone is welcome.

No, I need to figure that out. You're welcome to be one.

Thank you for the offer, but I don't have the sysadmin skills, and I already have a bit too much on my plate as you can guess πŸ˜…

I'm working on getting https://nord.pub/ online!(rebrand from experimental nord.red) Well, it is online but I wanted proper HA, Backups, and some curated Topics.

Hosted in the Nordics and committed to not being dependent on US tech. (using Hetzner Finland and BunnyCDN)

Yeah, general use with somewhat if a focus on the Nordics "market", but I'm not planning on launching competing communities against anything existing.

7

Sure, but I'm more thinking about increasing server spread across Piefed rather than specific communities as such.

7

I've been lurking on the Zulip for a while but you're right it's about time I sign up!

2

Signed up! I still might stick to this account mainly, but a Nordic oriented Piefed instance is definitely appealing.

If by "direct traffic" you mean to send them there, then I'd say we don't need that, and shouldn't want it. The whole reason federation works is because control is spread out. Giving one, or a few, instances control of most of the content and users is a horrible idea and begging for issues. Speaking of, if you're on lemmy.world, you should consider spreading elsewhere. At least don't send new people there.

A small instance isn't going to grow past PieFed.social in 1 day, let alone an actually big instance like Lemmy.world. If an instance grows too big then we just stop suggesting it and pick a new instance to suggest.

Cethinreply
lemmy.zip

People still direct people to Lemmy.world. A lot of people don't understand the benefits of federation still and want everyone on one instance. They won't stop when an instance gets too large.

1
Cethinreply

I don't know. I wouldn't be so sure. It's a good idea to spread the message anywhere.

Seems like a nice occasion for a reminder that this stuff is all made and run on a volunteer basis. There are many ways to contribute, but the easiest by far is by donating a little bit of money on a regular basis! Don't be deterred by feeling you have to give a lot - if a lot of people give a little that's much better. So give a little!

I use Liberapay, but patreon and ko-fi links are available under the "Donate" menu entry at piefed.social. The average LiberaPay contributor gives less than a dollar per weekβ€”which is awesome.

Alternatively, if you're on another instance, consider giving a little bit to your instance to help keep it running! It's all running on love and goodwill, and it works precisely because people like you decide it's worth contributing. :)

36

It's absolutely worth it to give to the Piefed project for how much effort these folks put in. If I were a developer I'd contribute that way, too.

If you're a new user, help the Fediverse grow by being active.
Make posts, comments or even communities and help this place grow

19

It seems people stuck around after to a pretty exceptional degree after the previous surge in June last year, when the number of active users was multiplied by four within a little more than a month. Hopefully the same will be true this time around!

Also curious what's next for this graph. Doesn't really seem to be slowing down.

12

Even if the graph not starting at zero could be misleading, a spike doubling the number of active user is still impressive.

3

scalloped growth

Sounds tasty and cancerous at the same time.

Yes, MAU is a bit misleading like that... Maybe 20% of them will stick around if we're lucky.

9

still a win. i'd rather the people who like it and put in effort stay than be awash with people who aren't bringing much. the biggest is the more people who try it and decide to stay the more diversity of thought we'll get. the threadiverse has a very eurocentric bias (here being the sociological construct, US and Canada both contribute to eurocentricism). i don't presume this will be fixed in this bump, but it is an opportunity for us who are already here to listen to new voices

lemmy.zip

I just signed up for lemmy (brand new here). Can someone help explain piefed? I looked it up and it seems it used the same protocalls? I downloaded voyager app to use Lemmy - do I need to do something else to use piefed? I'm sort of confused, because a cursory search sounds like piefed works on voyager as well. . . If I'm already on Lemmy, am I basically also on piefed, just a different instance?

Sorry, hopefully someone who is smarter can eli5?

14
Rimureply
piefed.social

Same protocol, yes, so they share all the same content. And a lot of apps originally built for Lemmy now work with PieFed too. Voyager is one of them so if you have an account on a PieFed server/instance you can just add that to Voyager.

When using a mobile app there's not much difference for the average person. But PieFed instances have a lot of mod and admin tools which will tend to improve the quality of the content and people you come across, if that's how the server admins want to make it. https://join.piefed.social/features

10

Ah, ok. This clears it up a bit. So it's moreso about the communities that are hosted on a piefed instance - as they have better moderation tools.

Thanks!

Honest question here. Since it's all the same stuff... why do I as a fediverse user care about piefed if it's basically an admin toolbox?

It's cool admins have good tools to minimize workload., but beyond that?

PieFed. Just make an account and follow the onboarding. You'll start noticing differences immediately.

onnekasreply

Ok. But once I'm in will I see the same content as on Lemmy?

1

Yep. You can export your settings from Lemmy and import then into your PieFed account, so all your community memberships and blocks will be replicated.

Registration is currently closed on piefed.social due to a DDoS so try any other.

1
lemmy.zip

So essentially it's just another instance? Do I need to create an account on a piefed instance to get the benefits of piefed vs Lemmy (which I'm not sure what I would actually get different).

4
Skavaureply
piefed.social

Yes, you would

Currently Piefed has tools lemmy doesn't: emote reactions, flairs, hashtags, polls, events, scheduled posts, feeds

4
Skavaureply

No, you do. You are commenting on a piefed post to a piefed user.

You just don't get all the extra bits I mentioned

Me too, fellow BuyerFromEU!

Just didn't delete my Reddit yet. There's some subreddits I need there that don't have the equivalent here yet.
But the plan is to start using this as my primary, and only go there when I need those.

6

Yeah, for me its my city subreddit, but then again, its just lots of comments from people in neighbouring cities going on about how shit it is or how arrogant we are. Anyway, welcome too!

2

Jip it's literally like 5 reddit posts over the last week-ish

They've gotten ~700,000 views now

8

It's an actual good increase but not starting the graph at zero is misleading. It didn't go from zero to the moon, it got from 1.5k to 3.5k, which is more than double, but not as exponential as the graph shows.

11

A day later and it's still going up at the same rate!
