He's fucking American, I genuinely don't even understand their issue with him is. I get that it's just racism but how do they rationalise it without admitting its just racism? What are their talking points because it makes no sense

I totally get that but usually they have some talking point to avoid directly admitting that

I literally don't think that the raciats understandthat Bad Bunny is American.

I'm not even American and even I know Puerto Rico is an American territory 😭

Yes, but many Americans don't know that. The name is Spanish. Hell, so many Americans don't realize that New Mexico is a state in their own country.

And it wasn't until the U.S. invaded Mexico and forced it to cede large swaths of its territory. Same with California, Arizona, Nevada, etc.

Puerto Rico didn't exactly beg to be annexed, either.

I think a lot of this panic about Latin American people illegally taking over the United States stems from repressed colonial guilt.

6

It's more based on fear, since the US Latin population seem to be maintaining a healthy birth rate, while the white people seem to have either lost wood, can't find the right hole, or have 'nads packed with PFAS. In some US states, whites are already a minority, and the various schemes to impose minority rule are unstable and require increasing effort as demographics keep on shifting.

1

This is just the mask-off, "We don't care that he's a US citizen...he's not white", kind of racism. They aren't even pretending that there's more to it at this point.

That’s nice but also very naive…

Gotta remember to always quote what I’m replying to so when folks edit their comment I’m not out here looking like an asshole…¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not the end of the world - it’s just a few downvotes on Lemmy…

Maybe if comment clarifies your perspective or whatever, reply instead of editing?

Normally I'd put it under an "edit:" but I thought I was quick enough this time that I wouldn't need to haha

I literally just edited another comment and thought about this exchange and how that would probably work too.

Ya my bad, even though they can't vote or receive citizen befits.

0

They can if they move to a state and register there. It is kinda weird that they could then move to another country and vote as an ex-pat but not if they move back to PR.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said booking Bad Bunny was “a terrible decision,” suggesting that Lee Greenwood would attract a “broader audience,” despite the 1980s country icon boasting fewer than 500,000 Spotify listeners compared with Bad Bunny’s 80 million.

I kinda wish this would happen. It'd go down as the most disappointing Superb Owl half time show in history.

He sang the "Proud to be an American" song, which is played at pretty much every 4th of July or other vaguely patriotic event in the south at least. But I can't name one other song he sang, and I don't see any reason at all to be proud of the USA right now.

15

Didn't he re-write the lyrics for a bunch of different countries?

[edit] - maybe it was just Canada.

1

Lol I am a Raiders season ticket holder, and since they moved to Vegas, the halftime shows have been superb. I've seen Lil Jon twice, Sublime with Rome, Ice Cube, and I feel like I'm missing a couple, but they have been for the most part, great. Lee Greenwood did one once, and first of all, I had to Google just to see who tf he was, then he was God awful. Out of pitch and just sounded like he was too old to still be performing. He played the proud to be uh 'murican song and finally fucked off. I hope Chudpoint USA hires this moron for their unwoke halftime show. It'll be a disaster.

19

He's an American citizen. Like ... There's not even a way to plausibly deny that this is solely because he is brownish and speaks Spanish.

Laugh in the face of anyone who praises it

Charlie Kirk would be proud. He was a racist piece of shit.

29

These MAGA snowflakes are making themselves a safe space and awarding themselves a participation trophy even though they lost this one 🤣🤣🤣

What's the complaint? That it's not an American performing?

The Who performed at the Superbowl before. They're not American...

EDIT: Yes, I know he's American. I'm trying to understand what these misinformed people are claiming to be upset about. They're not even consistent, which suggests that they're BSing about their reason.

22
lemmy.world

He is American. I still laugh at who the Squeaker of the House threw out there as a better alternative....Lee Greenwood, which I had to look up, because I never heard of him. Unlike Bad Bunny - I don't pay that much attention to pop music, but even I know who he is...

28

From another reply:

Yeah, I know. I should've made it more clear that I was attempting to get into their misinformed heads.

They don't know that he's American, but they're not even consistent. There have been non-American performances at the Superbowl before, so I don't even know what the complaint is supposed to be.

3

4

sh.itjust.works

I wish they would just admit it. If you have to lie about what's upsetting you, you should realize your reasoning for being upset is probably BS.

3

I'm pretty sure they think they are annoying it because that's what they think "not American" is. Same reason why they didn't give a fuck when white Europeans with songs in English were there.

2

I looked it up and it seems like Qatar might be able to help Idaho with it's issues with medical care for women. Apparently even with the absurd discrimination they suffer, health wise they appear to be better off than women in Idaho.

4

Why did Idaho matter here? Not from America so I can't understand why that particular state matters?

1

Nitpick, it's not a base. And apparently Singapore already has one there.

The Seven Mountain Mandate people sure are delicate little flowers, aren't they?

17

I find it's helpful to point out their supporting structures. They always go on about shadowy leftist groups like "antifa" that don't even have a freaking website, never mind any founders, any funding, any meetings, anyone in the group with any kind of platform or power or organization, etc....meanwhile, these assholes have things like Project 2025, ALEC, and the Seven Mountains Mandate stuff....

Alternative halftime shows are just a way for broadcasters to clawback viewers and increase ad rates during a period where everyone’s eyes are on another channel.

This will be to Fox and local Sinclair affiliates what the Butt Bowl was to MTV, or the Puppy Bowl was to Discovery.

Even more of a shame for them to spend a whole bunch of money on a big production only to not make a cent off of it because nobody is going to watch.

9

They have a guaranteed audience from Moscow. Right wing media can't fail to find an audience.

4

They'd just spin it into their being so immensely popular, the site crashed. I like where your head's at though

Maybe I missed something along the way but what in the ever loving fuck is up with this obsession over Lee Greenwood from the right? He is not a generational talent and has absolutely 0 appeal to a majority of people.

12

what in the ever loving fuck is up with this obsession over Lee Greenwood from the right?

They have almost nobody else to choose from. The vast majority of artists lean left (or at minimum lean away from the rightwingnuts).

6

Let them in or let them out. I'm sick and tired of this halfway situation with Puerto Rico. Personally I'm down for letting them be a state, it's something Trump could do that has him remembered positively that no Democrat could manage. But we need to authorize them to choose statehood or nationhood.

I also feel that way about the pacific territories but that's more difficult as they're tiny and far apart with few people.

Eta: if made a state Puerto Rico would be the 33rd largest, between Iowa and Arkansas. DC would be the 3rd smallest if made a state having more people than Vermont or Wyoming.

Arguably Wyoming probably shouldn't have been a state and should've just been added to neighboring states, whereas Vermont was the first state to be added and fought in the revolutionary war as their own country, so their small population doesn't really count against them

But yeah, more united states citizens live in Puerto Rico than in both Dakotas and Hawaii combined (or Kansas if you feel those are too small), and it wouldn't be the first state to speak a non English language, looking at Louisiana and the entire Southwest

11

Pessimistic take: Given how much weird involvement presidents have always historically had with the Superbowl, I honestly just kind of assumed the Bad Bunny as "such a controversial pick" was intentionally meant to stir shit up for marketing purposes.

It provides the left with a feeling of control by knowing that people that buy into the outrage (see the recent cracker barrel controversy, that was mainly bot driven marketing) are triggered. Tons of people who don't give a shit about football (or even Bad Bunny) will now make a point to at least watch the half time show for the chance to see the right wing outrage machine being owned on a national stage.

Everybody who buys into the "this is a disgrace and I am personally offended and outraged" machine, (also more likely to be watching bc they care about football) can tune into the TPUSA half time show, and feel their own little slice of control. There's even a chance many of the sponsors of the TPUSA half time show will be part of a parent conglomerate that also owns the sponsors of the Superbowl halftime show.

Create a controversy and market to both sides of the controversy. Americans watch and spend money to support "their side," but it turns out that both sides are owned by the same people. Example, Dove might sponsor the Superbowl while Axe Body Spray will sponsor the TPUSA show. Unilever still makes money regardless.

9

Seems like making a mountain out of a molehill. Nobody is forced to watch the superbowl or the halftime show lol.

2

Why do they have a foreigner performing at the Superbowl halftime show? Why not get a real American artist like Immortal Technique?

2

And like 0.00000001% of the audience will watch that instead of the bad bunny show lol

This is why they're so good at what they do and are winning. They never take a loss. They constantly flip these things to their advantage. The left just yell "Fuck off nazi scum" for the millionth time and then wait for tomorrows news to forget about the thing that pissed them off yesterday. Like fucking goldfish. When was the last time the left did something like this?

The left can't even manage to sway the charts in any meaningful way. It's not like people are sharing his music and giving him a bump. Cause why would we ever do that. Rally around someone. Just passively watch and comment hoping for some victory to just materialize on it's own.

hahaha I just scrolled down after posting this and the second comment is "Just blatant, bald faced racism. Just non stop racism from these nazi loving racists." never fucking change guys, never change.

-18

Culturally, the left doesn't press these issues. They happen. Everybody writes a lame comment that's usually about 15 years old. They move on.

Charlie Kirk getting shot was at least a small moment where a few started creating content and others shared it. That energy is needed for those two articles you linked. Cause without it, nobody cares.

So where the fuck is that energy?

Instead you call me a shill. Like get real. How about looking at what I'm saying. The left are involved in a game they're not even playing.

-4
lemmy.world

Perfect example. Someone else responded with some story that nobody knows about. Their response was like "yea they take losses" but then shows me two storeys that barely anyone can remember. We don't remember because we're not keeping these things alive and fresh. Charlie Kirk was the last time we could muster a half ass attempt at what they do every single fucking day. Where the hell is that energy on the left.
