Looked up my list and it’s really curious to see the ratings for my favorite games. Some games were marked “woke” for things I absolutely wouldn’t have thought of, while in other games I think some of the messaging flew over their heads.
Woke: Counterstrike, because there are female skins
Not Woke: FTL, where the main goal is to defeat an organization of violent racist facists.
I didn't use to read the texts too carefully when playing, so idk, I don't remember it. But Wikipedia agrees with you, so I guess that's how it is.
Come to think of it, even if they missed the narrative motivation, they would still have to count it as woke because it has female crew members who are just as efficient and strong as male ones. I shit you not, that was their complaint regarding Age of Empires 2 and 3...
This list is hilarious. It's so inconsistent. Assassin's Creed is woke because of a line in the fucking start screen of the game. Most games I love are woke according to them. What a sad existence must these people have when they cannot play all these great games. Cyberpunk? Woke! Satisfactory? Woke! Hades? Woke! Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor? Both woke! Celeste? They should make a second meme page for it that changes woke to based and reverses the colours while keeping the comments intact.

Indie game blobun did basically that. Unwoke gamers could disable lesbians from an option in the menu. Selecting this removed the main character, who is canonically lesbian, from the game leaving it unplayable.
It's hard to explain, but it's a web game in a similar vein to Neopets, but the active gameplay leans more in the direction of a Rougelike 😆 It probably requires quite the specific taste to enjoy it, I'm just building exactly what I would like to play myself haha

My favorite one though was Assassin's Creed Black Flag which is woke apparently because it shows Mary Reed engaging in crossdressing. Which is funny because if you go to the Wikipedia page for Mary Reed you'll see an 18th century wood engraving of her dressed in men's clothing.

Just checked Outer Wilds, which is deemed „slighly woke“ because the race of aliens to which you belong all use they/them pronouns. They do note that the race of aliens you‘re studying all use he/him/she/her pronouns.
Here‘s the thing - your race has evolved from amphibians. Hermaphroditism and spontaneous sex-change is a well-established trait in some species of amphibians. The other race are mammals, where such examples are much rarer.
For it to actually be a „woke“ thing, rather than world-building, you‘d have to have one of the mammals be referred to as „they“. Or, perhaps, one of your race referred to as „he“ or „she“. As it is, it suggests that gender is either non-existent or fluid amongst your species and therefore it makes no sense to use that as an identifier, and gender exists amongst the other species and therefore it does make sense to use that as an identifier.
And, truthfully, we don‘t know, because other than a couple of references to people „flirting“ with each other (in both species) and you being referred to as „hatchling“ rather than being given a name, sex gender, reproduction, etc. doesn‘t come up at all.

On the scientists, I think it would be less Woke if they were all female. It seems that the events in the games take place in large part because the arrogant/foolish scientists lose control of their own experiment.
Maybe it's just me, but them being able to create amazing technologies seems like less of a problem if they lose control and all die as a result.
There's an implication there that they got in over their head and/or were incapable of handling the work they were doing.
I think that's a pretty good example of the effects of DEI in the workplace.

The human supremecist plot is told through bits of text but also the fact that all rebel ships have 100% human crew.
Meanwhile the Federation (which is the government the player is fighting to preserve) values diversity and attempts to make peace with all the aliens.
One of the achievements you need to unlock one of the federation ships is to have a crew with at least 6 different species or something like that.
