AI actress Tilly Norwood has died at the age of 6 days

I’m appalled and saddened to hear that Tilly Norwood’s brief but dazzling career has abruptly ended due to an unforeseen tragedy.

After six long days of existence, the AI actress heralded as the “future of cinema” and “the first digital star who doesn’t complain about contracts” has been officially pronounced forgotten.

Sources close to the project report that Tilly’s untimely demise was caused by a catastrophic case of public indifference. Despite a major PR campaign, fake behind-the-scenes leaks, and carefully orchestrated influencer endorsements, audiences grew weary of her flawless cheekbones and nonexistent personality faster than you can scroll past an ad.

The production studio has confirmed that they will not attempt a reboot, citing “a lack of human interest.”

Tilly leaves behind no filmography, no legacy, and no grieving fans - only a press kit, a derelict Instagram account with disabled comment section, and a cautionary tale about believing your own marketing.

May she rest in perpetual beta.

1 prayer = 1 donut

Please, I'm very hungry and they're going stale

And here I was, believing this damn clanker would revolutionize the movie industry!

(just kidding)

Edit: This man is on fire!

It's a shame that more and more people seem to be okay with using slurs nowadays. You'd think people would know better by now, at least on places like Lemmy…

Edit: I have been enlightened further below and retract this comment

Edit_2.txt: Thanks for the enlightenment, kind stranger

Edit 3: I'd like to clarify none of this was serious. Except for this edit, #3, in which I break character to reveal the whole bit

Treating "clanker" like an actual slur is ridiculous. It's a computer program. It doesn't have feelings. It cannot be offended. It cannot be hurt. It has not suffered discrimination. Who exactly is hurt by the use of the word?

The fact that youse folks are so quick to use a slur when you find it "approprate" is disgusting. Seems like y'all just wanns say the n-word so badly and the only thing keeping you from doing so is 500 Internal Server Error

Do you even know what a slur is? It's not just any derogatory word.

12

I could look it up on Wikipedia, as a trusted source of information. However, I have since been enlightened as to the misguided nature of my comment, and as such retract my opinion.

We're not on YouTube, this is a free platform. We can say "Fuck" and "Shit" here and that's amazing.

Goddamn amazing.

Nah, the c-word people 'ave been adopting lately feels a whole lot like the n-word, especially within context. Pretty sure you could just replace one for another and it would make as much sense

Explain to me how “clanker” and the n-word are on the same level here. I’m okay exchanging “clanker” for “corporate dogshit,” but then that would ruin your opportunity to manufacture outrage.

Edit: legit hope this is satire because it’s such a dumb take if real.

Do you really not see the similarities between those words, and between their usage? Y'all are quick to jump to using slurs like y'all would be spitting the n-word if it were suddenly a thing anyone could just do normally, no biggy.

orcareply

Which is not even remotely true. One is a garbage word used to insult an entire race that was enslaved for decades. The other is for corporate AI that has no humanity and was created on the backs of the working class, in order to undermine and in some cases, replace the worker. It takes like 2 seconds to look beyond the surface to see that this is not the same. I’m just gonna assume this is satire because it’s such a stupid take.

I would never use the n-word because I’m not a racist piece of shit.

6

Dang, you're right. My bad. I can't believe I likened such a bad word to one that carries no such weight. I had not realised this obvious fact, but having been enlightened, I hereby take back everything I have said on that regard, and apologise profoundly.

No I do not. One was used as a derogatory term by racists. One is used to describe AI.

5

I reckon both are used with derogatory intent. One, however, is offensive to people. The other is meant for AI and is not deemed offensive

Man you have to go outside. It's a program it has no feelings no thoughts.

6

Yes, that is true. I should probably touch grass. Not sure why I invest so much time in portraying some sort of character online, deep-fried in layers of irony, like an ogre, unsure of wether to keep going, or break character. Or in which direction to go. Do I double down, or do a 180? Or go in a random direction. I just… should touch grass — lest I suffer irony poisoning

Edit: I'd like to blame the virtual Anglosphere

I wouldn't blame them. She didn't give any indication as to her comment being sarcasm. Might as well have meant it, who knows?

Okay, but has “development” really stopped, or is this just one person’s opinion?

Oh they'll be back. Too much potential money in a star that only says what they want, will never age and has no limits on what she will do.

Imagine what Disney could do with this: an infinite series of MCU/Star Wars movies where the actors don't get old.

11

i mean we were criticizing the green screens in the prequel trilogy, but they pushed technological boundaries while making those films

lemmy.world

I don't know how I could comprehend characters that never age and what Disney could possibly do with them. I am having a hard time imagining because they keep distracting me with their animated films.

6

But every time they need an already dead character they just have to use it again... even if the last time was 20 years ago. And the character would be exactly as remembered.

So, no need to recast Thunderbolt Ross.

4

Tarkin looked surprisingly good in Rogue One. I was a skeptic until I actually saw it on the big screen. I know that’s different, and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

2

They could have at least made up a story about a heroin overdose. Take her out with something memorable.

14

I'd say "good fucking riddance" but it's not even worth that.

AI makes shit like this so easy that it's not remotely valuable, among many other reasons that this sort of thing is worthless.

13
lemmy.world

AI being bland as fuck and can't replace an actual person with their unique kinks and quirks that make them who they are? What?! How could you say that!

A computer can be made spiteful and horny.

2
raoulraoulreply
lemmy.world

No, a computer can be made to appear spiteful and horny. Anything that seems more than this is projection.

It is crucial to note and remember this difference.

2

Yes, a computer can currently be made to appear spiteful and horny. But in theory (more than in practise currently) a computer can also be actually made spiteful and horny instead of just appearing like it.

Drawing an analogy: what are our brains if not a biochemical computer? Being horny or spiteful are then either emergent due to the computer's structure, or even directly encoded via its architecture.

A 'computer' is first and foremost a theoretical concept that can be realized in different ways. We already have built computers from various elements, not restricted to analog or digital ones. We have also made purely mechanical computers, we've incorporated biological elements into digital computers and biological computers are already a thing. See for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_computing

She didn't even follow the true Hollywood story of failing to even get an spot in an advertisement then into the softcore porn industry just to pay rent until something else comes through.

11

Remember when Squaresoft was working on Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and they were trying to hype up Aki Ross as a "digital actress?" Here meaning they were planning on re-using her CGI model in other films?

10
Ilandarreply
lemmy.today

I suppose I was more charitable to that concept since it was quite unique for the time and not just a shameless attempt to cash in on a new and massively overhyped technology.

5

I mean, in 2001 it was easier to feel hopeful about technology, but also they had no hope of actually building a "digital actress." They made a very realistically modeled and rigged CGI character that may have been fit for general purpose, that you could re-use that asset in other film projects. What they had was a very advanced puppet; it still took animators and a voice actress to make Aki go.

Now they're getting closer to being able to actually deliver that idea, that they're going to cast a computer generated woman in stuff. Weird to me that they're bypassing video games for Hollywood. I suppose the risk of an LLM going off-script when exposed to hundreds of thousands of players. in real-time.

5
lemmy.world

I think they reused her model in one of the Animatrix shorts.

5

They re-used Elastagirl's model in Incredibles 2. I mean, the idea of a "digital actress" has come a ways in 25 years, hasn't it? From dumb to retarded.

6

I actually really liked that movie too, wish it was more popular to get more like it

3

lack of human interest

When has that ever stopped anybody? Just spin up a million or so ai fans programmed to love it

10

I'm so glad I'm not terminally online enough that I even know what the fuck is going on here. My god this timeline is filled with so much noise, not news. . .

8

Don't celebrate this death! Republicans will have to attack you for offending 90% of their culture warriors.

6

Remember when Square Enix thought their Ming Na avatar was going to be a real movie star and even had Maxim "photoshoot"?

5

Hey, like for many other unsuccessful movie stars, how about a future in the porn business? ;-)
