My mum tried to ban me from watching South Park before South Park made fun of exactly that.

17

I wasn't banned from watching South Park when it started. Even my 3 -year-old at the time brother was allowed to watch it with me. But I was banned from watching Ren and Stimpy several years earlier which disappointed me at the time but in hindsight I support wholeheartedly.

Can vaguely remember the Berlin Wall falling. All the adults seemed to think it was really important.

Maaaaan somebody reminded me this existed last week and I had to bust these out and give em a spin

Real talk, if you have young kids and DosBox or something, soooo many of those old games hold up.

Mine loved the OG Carmen San Diego games, though there were a couple short history lessons to understand some parts. Didn't quite clue into the 'use the dossier* to determine matches for warrants without a time penalty' trick that earned me a pizza party back in the day, lol.

*I don't remember what it's called, the file with all of the VILE agents

In which god forsaken country are voting rights dependent on children's age?

(I am aware, it's the same here - I was just making a joke by splitting up the sentence differently)

You are welcome! I had two, very simple, jobs doing grunt work, but Y2K updates got me into tech.

1

FIST BUMP. It was my first IT job and mostly monkey work, but my best friend and I were stoked to break into tech. Next job was also Y2K updates. And I just realized I had two jobs in mitigation.

LOAD "BLAH" ,8 ,1. Just kidding, I only has a cassette drive. :(

Did you learn to splice with a razor blade and scotch tape?

2

Same! But I was four. And I went to the theater without my parents. Just some neighborhood girl rode me there on her bicycle handlebars. True story.

Edit for afterthought: I still don't understand Star Wars. (Does ANYONE?)

Currently there are about 8.2 billion people on earth. When I was born it was just under 3 billion.

I was at 3.7 billion. I could rant all night, but so many of our problems are from explosive population growth. Humans never developed political and social systems to deal with it, and we sure as hell didn't evolve for it.

That's a portable CD player with a tape adapter in its headphone jack. The tape is the played by the tape deck of your car stereo. This is for when you didn't have a brand new car with a CD player in the dash or the trunk, but you still had a portable CD player.

3

Ahhhh I see now— for a moment for me it looked like one of those AI gen images where it looks like something but the closer you look it isn’t anything— used to have a tape to aux converter in my car for this purpose.

When I told my colleagues about my surprise when I found out The Scorpions were German, none, but none of them had any idea what band I was talking about.

6
lemmy.world

For some reason after Gorky Park in Winds of change I thought they were east german.

2

As a non-native, I was a bit too old to find the lyrics and get them. After that, it was quite weird to me, but apart from the name being a bit off, I never heard of Gorky Park before.

your bottle of ibuprofen in your bag is getting low, you better refill it with the big bottle from the kitchen cabinet before tomorrow.

2

When you were too young to recall it, the same was absolute trash. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I loved the star wars films that came out while I was a child, but the ones that were made after that are really bad.

5

So you're in your either in your mid 50s or wrong.

7

I was alive for 9/11 but have no memory of it

I got my first cell phone before the iPhone was first released

5

I was there, at Cape Canaveral, in the audience, when Challenger exploded. I had just finished Jr. Space Camp, and decided that if stuff like that was gonna happen while I was around NASA, then maybe I should look for an alternative career path.

5

When I learned that MacGyver was American, knowing full well I saw him speak French in every episode, it made me very angry for some reason.

Waiting for your favourite song to be played on the radio and pressing record and pause on the cassette recorder at the exact right time. Massive feelings of win.

Came home and the family was all excited, asking me about it. 6-yo me, "Meh. It was OK I guess." Went on to become a fanatic.

My youngest kid just graduated highschool. Pell Grants literally covered my tuition (nothing else, but the classes) for college.

Also I know what this is

4

Took one of those to the office and asked around. Surprisingly, some of the people around my age didn't get it and a couple of young people did!

Had stacks of those things!

2

We used slide rules in high school physics class. I still have mine.

I vividly remember seeing a show on TV very young, in a hotel room. It just happened to be on. When I saw it again, older, I realized it was the TNG pilot.

How do you figure that second one? Do you have less than a couple of years left?

I was in high school on 9/11/2001. I remember another teacher ran into my classroom and told my teacher to turn the news on just as first period was ending. The tv was already on in my 2nd period class. I watched both towers fall on live tv. It was... an experience, that's for sure.

Side note, my physics teacher was in the Navy Reserves and was called into active duty. My physics class was "taught" with varying degrees of success by substitutes for the rest of the semester. That was an interesting class, and for the wrong reasons.

3

This feels like "tell me how old you are while telling me how old you are"

3

I was hungover, laying on my office floor praying to just die. Strange enough, our work orders from the ISP weren't ready, rare event. So everyone was watching TV as it went down. Still remember the mood instantly shifting from, "What a tragedy.", to, "Holy shit!! We're under attack!"

263660769 - that's a number that people could use to talk with me in a specific way when I was 14. Neither my parents nor anyone in my school had that number and the vast majority of them would not know what it was either.

But that's only true because I lived in a very small town in the middle of nowhere in South America. For a similar experience somewhere "more modern", that number would have had to have at least one less digit.

Uh oh!

If I'm right you are late 30s to early 40s. Either Elder Millenial or the last vestiges of Gen X. A Xennial if you will.

I played Super Mario Bros on a table arcade in a pizza restaurant.

3

My pizza place had a sit down Mrs Pac-Man, a stand up Galaga, Tempest and Centipede, and a western themed pinball machine.

3

My dad had to remove me from the cinema when we saw Toy Story on release because I found Sid's vivsected toys too frightening

3

I groan when I get up and my back pops when I lean a certain way. I'm way too young for those.

  1. when I was a kid we didn't come home until dinner or fear the belt from dad

  2. the song I lost my virginity to was Lady D'Arbanville, it was an older lady that was almost 30 years older than me. she wouldn't stop speaking French the whole time even though she knew English.

2

My rollerskates had 4 wheels and looked like tennis shoes. A cartoon named Thundarr helped develop my lifelong love of post apocalyptic media. Mtv played music videos, all day. I watched the pilot of my favorite t.v. show ever after work one night. "You exist here"

I recently found a couple old PC games I used to play as a child and thought was part of one or more "1000-in-1 Games" discs. They were 3-D Ultra Minigolf Deluxe and 3-D Ultra Radio Control Racers.

One of my absolute FAVORITE edutainment games was Franklin the Turtle Clubhouse Adventures.

I got to experience having shelves of VHS tapes alongside a drawer of them, and also having DVDs at the same time. Hell, my family even has netflix back when they mailed DVDs and I think we used to still have one or two of them from back then for a long while, but they probably got lost when we had to move.

I can remember my family renting games from Blockbuster.

Edit:

Pretty sure we had all or most of the 3•2•1 Penguins DVDs since my parents, like most every parent who let their kid watch it, loved VeggieTales and thought that Big Idea would have another big hit. VeggieTales is by far basically the only Christian cartoon I could ever recommend and I'm pretty sure I saw every one of the originals on VHS.

So you actually get most of the lyrics in Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire?"

Gen Z, or those born between the late 90s and around 2010.

It can be applied more broadly to mean youths in general though, just as boomer gets used by the younger crowd to mean anyone older than them.

3

Cell phones were never to be seen on high school property. You're allowed to have them for emergencies, but you can never whip it out. If a teacher or administrator saw it, it would be taken away until end of the day.

I was alive for but don't remember 9/11. Some might call me a Zennial.

When I started school my year group would use encyclopaedias and the school library to look up information for projects, by the end of primary school (elementary for the yanks) we were using Google in the school computer room.
