Would you rather have a place where you can't talk about it or else you get banned and any dissent is killed and banned and it's slowly getting worse day by day?

Or a foss freedom free structure platform where people can ACTUALLY talk about what's on their mind? Hmmmm?

Sounds like you have some privileges you maybe need to realize you have.

6

No you don't understand, they didn't say they weren't on Lemmy, they are as you clearly noticed. So they do have access to all the political discourse they want when they want it.

They said that Lemmy is too politically dominated and that some communities only live on Reddit rn.

I kinda agree, I use Lemmy 99% of the time but when a new Poe league releases the poebuildsdiscussion has interesting information about the game, not having political discourse in that community is irrelevant since that's now what's about. I'd prefer if it was here but there clearly is no interest, as a transition was attempted with the API exodus and it failed.

11

Yah, he is saying there isn't much variety in subject matter. Sadly I still have to go to reddit to find a lot of topics.

4
lemmy.zip

If there was some decent political discussion I wouldn't mind it as much

The problem is that people here can't stand to see anything they might disagree with.

3
lemmy.today

right wingers and the tankies are the only ones bitching about how thier political discussion isnt being discussed. i dont care either way, as long as it doesnt becomes obnoxious

4

I once made the mistake of saying something against Luigi and had the comments jump on me. This is as much of an echo chamber as anywhere else.

1

You mean there are too many people who disagree with stuff they disagree with?

2

Politics, tech, and Star Trek are the only three topics on Lemmy in any significant numbers, and even tech is politics half the time. The gaming communities are mostly politics about gaming, the porn communities are mostly dead, and forget anything more specific (other than Trek of course.)

2

To be fair it's about the new UK nanny dictatorship law.

In theory lemmy should do the same and the UK government could sue and block access of any lemmy instance not following their ludicrous laws.

9
lemmy.world

The problem is that the vast majority of content and activity is on the more normie side of the web.

People still use X more than BlueSky or Mastodon, after all.

Honestly Lemmy gets mentally draining, constant political drama that is guaranteed to lean left, barely any non-partisan or neutral discussions happen here and god forbid anyone say anything that can be seen as conservative because a barrage of insults are certain to come your way.

While I support the Lemmy project there are quite a few communities that I had subscribed to on Reddit that are missing here.

-7

something tells me you whining about not having enough conservative propaganda on a site, that wants nothing to do with it, go back to reddit.

9

My “whining” is because of people like /u/[email protected]. This is what makes Lemmy mentally draining, they’re hellbent on their political ideology and if you don’t conform you get ousted, fed to the fishes so to speak.

3

I hear you.

I'd never really encountered the nutty parts of progressive politics until coming to Lemmy. Often times you don't need to say something conservative, but merely say something that challenges a poorly conceived thought bubble and you get piled on.

There's a really strong sense of idealism here. A lot of users deal in absolutes and don't seem able to engage with the nuance of life.

4

As anti-establishment and highly critical of the Democratic Party I have seen the exact same thing here is on Reddit

I have a good word filter list that seems to do the trick. Apart from when the titles are "things am I right?" And the description is "this ^", no word filter will work on that. Wish there was a politics tag.

By politics they mean anything that's left-wing. Right-wing stuff like causal racism isn't seen as political since it's so normalized in America.

Not really, need more popular hobby communities as they are often places that politics don't impact

2

It’s weird that you complain about what you subject yourself to, that’s a sin according to the satanic Bible

-4

Reddit needs a better tagging system than just NSFW. It was pointless having a filter when you don't subscribe to any porn subreddits and all the ones you are subscribed to don't allow porn in the first place. It's only natural people started using NSFW for other things, most notably spoilers, which I believe they've added in recent years. If you had the filter enabled, you ended up missing out on content.

46
OboTheHoboreply

It does need better tagging but honestly thats not the issue here. This is because of the new UK law, simple as.

True, but I dont want reddit's shitty NSFW tagging system to distract from the important issue here

“Estimate age from selfie”?! Wtf have we become…

When I was 14, I looked like I was 20. When I was 20, I looked like I was 35. When I was 35, I looked like I was 50. You can’t determine someone’s actual age from a fucking photo. Jesus.

41

My 25 year old SO got carded while my 19 year old brother wasn’t questioned when we were at a liquor store. I think because my brother had a big beard they assumed he must be old lol.

9

Yep, same. I'm not a fan of people thinking I'm not old and grumpy, but they usually find out.

4

When I was working at a local supermarket, we had the instructions to explicitly ask anyone for ID that we deemed 40 or younger, when they tried to buy tobacco or alcohol. For that exact reason.

11

Reddit doesn't really care; they're going to do the bare minimum legally so they can feed more ads and get more clicks.

5

taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning

Them people won't get hung on a technicality. You have to be nuts not to be paranoid these days.

5

With how the law is written, if you think anyone might ever make a mistake (likely), think the government might ever bother going through the hassle of enforcing it (probably less likely if you're not running a big website), and don't have loads of spare money to pay huge fines with or to pay an age verification service with (likely), then blocking the UK is the only way to be compliant. It doesn't require a technicality. The law just doesn't have any leeway for honest minor mistakes or small hobbyist websites.

2

At least on lemmy we can just block instances that do idiotic things like that and still use the rest of the service

Images should load from your local Lemmy instance right?

But checking now I see you, OP and the com are all from the same instance. So I’m confused.

1
jaybonereply
lemmy.zip

Oh shit, my bad. Was reading too fast.

But still, the image should load from your local instance right? So in that commenters case, lemmy.world right?

Edit: at least on my instance, it appears to go through a proxy on my local instance:

https://images.lemmy.zip/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmings.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F3b9a4c4b-3079-4e67-a5e2-0cd49074d81f.png

Do some other instances direct link images?

3

Proxying was added after a bunch of csam attacks, where every instance admin would have to block it themselves. Now with proxying an admin can either block it themselves or the original posting instance can block it.

4

Some instances use the image proxy and others don't. It seems that mine doesn't.

3

This sounds more like a "fuck UK age restriction laws" not reddit.

The UK's age restriction laws online are now enforced under the Online Safety Act (OSA), which requires online platforms to verify the age of users before they access categories of "harmful" content, including pornography and content related to self-harm or eating disorders. Websites, apps, and services hosting such content must implement robust age checks, with platforms facing significant fines or blocking if they fail to comply. Methods for age verification can include facial age estimation, ID scanning, or credit card checks.

19

Methods for age verification can include facial age estimation

Can't that be easily bypassed by using an older person for the selfie shot?

1

They did not call out the true mofivation of lawmakers so they are complicit.

1

Reddit isn't worth it any more IMO, It's all just downvoting and moaning over everything. Yes that happens here but at least people seem to talk more.

The mods are also unaccountable. They can (and do) simply ignore your DMs asking for details or reconsideration of your ban. And even if they do respond, the reasoning will be a short gibberish response that you cannot appeal.

5

Also many will remove your comments without telling you, it appears to be posted, I learned reveddit showed you what was removed.

But yeah mods work for free so allowing their petty tyranny is a selling point of the gig, not sure how lemmy works, did see one dude that said banned user arguing with people on another instance.

3

The audience over there is definitely a lot less intelligent than we have over here. And the bots & reposts & even bots COMMENTING are probably an overwhelming majority of the audience over there. It's sick & pointless & a waste of time & I must break the addiction.

I'm not gonna lie, I visit Reddit too, but without an account and in private, for 3 and only communities. Most of my time is Lemmy. You can start slowly like I do. It's a piece of luggage actually. Fun fact Portmanteau is itself a portmanteau of porter (to carry) and manteau (mantle).

3

That IS a fun fact 😃 you just had me go down a 5 minute rabbit hole.

"Just how did a 19th century French suitcase come to represent a unique category of words? It was Lewis Carroll that provided the connection. In his children's book Through the Looking Glass, Humpty Dumpty explains that a portmanteau is a word with two meanings packed into one.

"In truth, a “portmanteau” is itself a portmanteau! Its name is derived from combining the French words porter (meaning “to carry") and manteau (meaning “cloak”)."

I went to use Marketplace last year which meant signing into my old FB account for the first time since like 2013, even though I barely used it before that. Turns out it had been hacked at some point in the last decade and I had to upload a bunch of pics and ID stuff to get it back with a 48 hr review time or something...

Ooooooor... Just made a new account.

There was less important dt on that account then there was me giving Meta my latest update on where I am in life now.

Edit: Actually, just remembered, that old account a friend got my phone and changed all my details. I still get happy birthday messages in April because family get alerted, know I don't have FB, and send an SMS. No, I was not born in April. I assume I'm still in a "It's complicated" relationship as well.

2

How would they handle sending them a faked driver's license? I doubt they have access to the national database needed to verify anything on the pic of the license.

At least at one point that worked because there was a new article about the sudden surge of popularity from a YouTube video from like 2011 of a middle aged woman looking left then right whichb had successfully fooled the system. Guessing they fixed it since.
