When you're as prolific as he was, supporting a government that's actively mistreating the majority of its 300m+ population, you've made millions of people's lives worse. :::

Going back to trump, he is all about himself and no empathy towards others. He is willing to get Ukrainians and Palestinians killed in exchange for whatever putin and bibi are giving him. He had no problem of having two politicians assassinated to just distract from No King protests.

So yeah, I wouldn't put past him to use him for political gain, like excuse to deploy military in Utah or some other goal he wants to achieve.

Wars start all the time and don't escalate into worldwide conflicts. This is like saying "The next recession has started, just look at X!!!" It's really easy to make a doomer take, but when the doom fails to materialize, it's always "okay, sorry, we got the date wrong... but soon! Doooooooom!" Any sort of take like this deserves a blanket response: put up or shut up. Let's see your bet on Polymarket.

Outside Moab and SLC (which are moderate), Utah is one of the reddest states in the union. From a despotic point of view, this makes no sense.

Wasn’t Kirk on the release Epstein files bandwagon anyway? That sounds like something that would let you fall out of favor.

Trump's administration might be more competent now, but Trump himself certainly isn't. If he found himself suddenly not liking Kirk, I would expect to see him trash talking on TruthSocial.

A far more likely scenario: all the recent political violence we've been seeing is the result of unstable individuals in a politically divisive climate with unfettered access to firearms.

I mean, Russia's certainly looking like they want to try at Finland again with those troop buildups, and they're propping up a lot of armed agitators in Moldova, as well as a lot of sabotage across Central Europe (and now a drone incursion accidentally-maybe-not into Poland). Sure looks to me like if Russia isn't an aggressor nation towards Europe, they're doing a damn fine job imitating one.

Do they have the troops, morale, equipment, money, or veterancy to effectively prosecute a war against a nation that hasn't undergone serious regime change recently? My money is personally on no success, but I'm definitely willing to say that Putin will give it a try. He has leashed his entire wagon to the horse named "expansionism", and he NEEDS some sort of victory to keep any semblance of public support, no matter how jaded his populace might be - otherwise his dictator friends might get ideas on seizing Russian lands.

3

and now a drone incursion accidentally-maybe-not into Poland

You don't fly a hundred of miles with a remotely controlled drone by accident.

Another thing is that to steer them they used Polish SIM cards. There was actually news that Ukrainians found Polish and Lithuanian SIM cards in short down drones, back in July, so this escalation was planned for weeks.

2

I'm not saying that Russia isn't being a class-a douchenozzle. I'm saying it hasn't escalated yet, there is still plenty of space for de-escalation, and predicting the future is really hard.

1

Sure that wars start all the time, but they typically is happening in unstable countries. This time we have war in a well established country which was invaded by its imperialist neighbor.

With trump basically dropping international law and outright saying that he won't help Europe, this will expand into rest Europe unless Russia bankrupts or Europe finds a good deterrent (it doesn't have one now, because US won't help).

Conspiracy talk. Show me the proof. Or show me your bet on Polymarket that we will eventually find evidence.

Whatever you say. Awfully a lot of coincidences happens when trump is in power and all end up in his favor somehow.

Outside Moab and SLC (which are moderate), Utah is one of the reddest states in the union. From a despotic point of view, this makes no sense.

The goal is to have military everywhere, red states likely will be prioritized last, but remember that the military wasn't deployed to California or was deployed to Los Angeles. He isn't threatening to deploy to Illinois, but to Chicago.

Anyway this was an example, looks like he uses this event to go after the opposition.

We don't even know who the killer was but it is already framed that "radical left" is behind it.

When you realize how low the bar is, you should never have imposter syndrome again. At this point the remaining federal government is only composed of Trump loyalists.

The claims of meritocracy replacing DEI are beyond ridiculous. How many campus shooters have ever just walked away like this? This was a high profile assassination. The fact that they still have not found the guy that did this, should let you know they either let this happen or they're now just completely incompetent. I'm leaning towards the former, but the latter is definitely a possibility.

Anybody can just be handed power and control under this administration, no matter how unqualified. That is how the right has been operating for the last 25+ years. Literally that is why people keep joining this grift. If you're willing to pledge loyalty, take advantage of people, and help destroy your own country, you can make bank.

The people that fund the right refuse to let a penny of their money go towards taxes to pay for public services, but they will literally throw absurd amounts of money at anything that promotes their agenda. They would pay somebody to publicly set their own money on fire, if it meant that person could convince a handful of people to keep voting Republican.

The really sad thing is, there is some truth to the left (or at least the Democratic party) becoming so comfortable being cemented in established norms and institutions, that they have managed to become exclusionary and made a big chunk of the U.S. feel alienated.

Like a lot of the institutions on the left have become what the Republican party was when the new right was first forming. Everybody "new" actually has connections to somebody already established in the party. They're usually somebody's kid, relative, or family friend, or they attended the same Ivy League and were recruited by somebody in the establishment.

50

I read a really interesting article years ago that spoke about that happening on Communist China back in Mao's time. Essentially all the folks who were competent retired/replaced by folks with connections to the party not the role. Thus corruption infiltrated.

I can't find the article and I don't remember the professor's name who wrote it but I remember thinking it was odd that a Chinese professor was writing about the government and letting it be published. I think he may have gotten in trouble after the fact or something else.

Tinfoil hat time: Based on the close up of the shooting, it looks like he got shot right in the corrotid artery, which has a very high mortality rating. This wasn't a lucky shot, this was well aimed. If you look at the tape, it doesn't look like someone in the crowd had a gun, no one in the crowd was reacting before the shot occurred, and no one saw a gun pulled. In the crowd full of people, how to you avoid everyone else and make a kill shot like that? I legit believe this was a shot taken from far away and the person that took the shot had the ability to make a sniper shot like that, (some form of police/military training.) Then, before he's been officially pronounced dead, Trump posts "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!" Trump wrote on his social media platform. If he hadn't officially been declared dead, why was Trump saying that Charlie Kirk was dead before it was official. Next Trump is blaming the left with no proof. I'm calling it, Trump had Kirk assassinated as a false flag operation, and this will be trump's reischtag fire. Buckle up. Edit: NYT is saying the shot came from a roof via a high power bolt action rifle, because the gun was found in the woods near the campus. Authorities also claim to have video footage of the suspect going to the roof of a campus building.

53
Frezikreply

The shooting spot was about 250 yards away. That's WWII sniping range, but not particularly far for modern precision rifles. According to Ryan Cleckner (US Army Ranger sniper), precision marksman training in the Army makes you use iron sights out to 600 yards. A good setup these days can hit a dinner plate (read: a human head) at 1000 yards, and that's not even pushing it.

They didn't have to hit him the neck. They just needed to hit the general head area. They got lucky hitting the artery dead on, but any head hit has a very high probability of death.

There are millions of bench rest shooters with a bolt action rifle who could make that shot.

55
The_vreply
lemmy.world

If you have a regular 30.06 bullet with a rifle sighted in at 200 yards, it will hit around 5" lower than you aim at 250 yards depending on the gun and conditions.

If you have it sighted in at 300 yards and aim for center mass (heart) the bullet will hit around 5" above where they are aiming.

In both conditions the bullet hits the neck area.

24
SGforcereply
lemmy.ca

Also, I don't know if people train for downward sloped shots. He may have over/under corrected.

7

Not usually in my experience. Almost all target shooting is on relatively flat ranges. Especially not for ranges that short.

For those that don't know, when firing down the slope the effect of gravity decreases the bullets velocity loss. So the bullet transverses the distance in less time and drops less over a given distance.

When firing up a slope the bullet loses velocity due to gravity. So it drops more due to the extra time it takes for the bullet to transverse the distance.

There are two carotid arteries. Based on the footage, it looks to me like only his left carotid artery got hit. It would make sense because bullets make a way bigger hole when exiting than they do when entering.
I don't think anyone, no matter how skilled they are, would be aiming to do that. It's way more likely to be a failed headshot or shot to the torso.

17

Then walk into highly congested areas like a student union building and make a quick change into a different university branded outfit.

They could then walk to public transit with the crowd of people as the officials shut down the school.

Therefore, COG is the standard for low-res LCDs (monochrome like character ones and color like a feature phone) but high-res panels (TV, PC, smartphones), where a small bezel is needed and/or low yield would lead to too much value lost, use COF (chip on flex), where the LCD driver is soldered to the FPC (flex printed circuit, which is also the flat cable) and then the wide FPC connector (with connections to the thousands of rows and columns, not just the serial interface) is bonded to the glass with ACF.

What is the other COG, anyway? Church of God? Children's Oncology Group?

'Continuity Of Governance'

Basically, making sure everyone's still afraid of the government even when something bigger and scarier than government that shatters a lot of the illusions it's based on comes along, like a particularly nasty hurricane or earthquake.

Edit: because they can't, like, help. That would be communism.

That’s where the killer fled. Wouldn’t that be normal to search and clear that area?

Geniuses ... guy who called for violence against people, wanted to deny people's rights, making fun of their misery, downplaying deaths of other people, publicly mocking others in distress and making millions of dollars off it all ... and doing it all on a daily basis on national platforms with a following of millions .... FBI suddenly thinks that people might want to kill this person.

18

I think the FBI merely made an official statement and the media was starving for anything new to print.

So Trump's gonna send NG troops to Utah right? The crime in these red states is really out of control.

For real. One dork gets beat up in DC, and here comes martial law.

6

Well to be fair; this was a deepstate deepfake false flag with a crowd full of crisis actors. Kirk actually got cosmetic surgery to have a normal size face and is living out his live on some island with a sweet pension.

7

I'm getting shit for not crying my face off meanwhile the FBI making dad jokes!?

Pretty sure the puncture wound was from a random meteorite falling from the sky.

Gosh you mean someone executed a perfectly aimed shot into his carotid and picked him off like a clay pigeon in a shooting gallery, escaped a security patrolled event without being identified, and you think that might not be just some rando? Wow FBI that's some stellar detective work!

14

Look, the only qualifications now are loyalty to the party, so they might not be the sharpest, but at least they have a job, in this economy? Who could blame them for just vibing

4

Of course he was targeted. The man dedicated his entire career to spreading misinformation and hatred. He reaped what he sowed.

I mean... fuckface got got during a school shooting. LOTS of people get murdered during school shootings every fucking day in this country because we worship assault rifles.

It actually makes a lot of sense to indicate if this was a targeted assassination or if someone missed while aiming at kindergarten nap time.

13

No no no. It is Freedom! The Freedom to celebrate guns' rights and to sacrifice your loved ones in the name of making sure Ted down the street can have five assault rifles in his living room.

So, my aunt was there and said she was in charge of securing the trees. Said the trees in front of the student union only took 3 hours to secure.

but the nearby woods have been secured, authorities said.

It's a joke about securing (the trees in) the woods.

10

This might be a domestication attempt, it is still technically securing the tree, but it is more about controlling its growth and less about stopping those bastard ass wild trees from getting their limbs on rifles and shooting nazis in the neck.

3

Send up the Bat signal! The pod cast bros running the FBI don't have a fucking CLUE.

11

There may have been a weapon "aimed" or "targeted" at the victim for the shooting to occur. The FBI is 60% certain that a random bullet did not magically manifest and hit the racist conservative idiot in the neck.

11

Their original mark didn't show up so they took the windfall....

Wow. The FBI is either incompetent or complicit.

Generally when someone is shot, they are indeed targeted. I know the concept of aiming is somewhat anathema to you Americans, but it is often much more effective than your usual approach to firearms.

6

Your slurs are ironically inaccurate to the point where it still causes the US Army difficulty

Look up the "The Cult of the Rifleman"

1

Uh, duh?

Cripes the FBI has fallen so far since Trump has taken office again. I guess they really did lose a lot of their best and brightest due to having a unqualified moron in charge.

5

i think i probably have a better chance of finding the killer if i wanted to than this administration.

5

Targeted by feds as a false flag. And by feds I don't mean all fed, I mean corrupt ones. They kind that manipulate regular people to do crazy shit.

4

I mean sure, how else would you shoot someone? By not taking aim?

4

No, no, this is the system working as they said it would. Good guy with a gun took out the bad guy. In what is probably a first.

6

Gun control means hitting that your aiming at. He had pretty damn good control
