I’m working through Star Trek, watched TNG and DS9 and on Voyager now. I’ve always been aware of it but somehow never realized how good it is! Which is nice because now I feel like I discovered a treasure trove, there are so many shows and movies.

22

TNG and DS9 are my go to comfort watch! Voyager wasn’t too bad either. Stay away from the TNG movies though, unless you just wanna laugh.

2

I've really been digging this one. I was hoping they'd show what's going on outside, but I've been really pleasantly surprised otherwise. And of course it's way way too tempting to spoil it by looking up the books' synopses.

Just caught up to episode 8 and no more binging for me :(

3

I’ve literally just started watching this tonight. Seems interesting so far, curious to see what they do with it.

3

im a little disappointed. Saw the hype and currently watching, im just not getting the grand scale of things, and the set pieces seems recycled. But overall a good watch so far.

lemmy.world

Just watched Star Trek The Next Generation for the first time! Loved most of it...though it has some middling and really bad moments. About to watch all the TNG movies next!

Not sure if you have watched DS9. It is just as good as TNG if not better.

lemmy.world

I watched the pilot episode...it was hard going from HD TNG to SD DS9. Maybe some time off and I'll come back to it and not notice the quality difference!

2

For both series, the first 2 seasons are kinda rough. Once they figured out what worked they really start to shine from S3 onward. Personally I hated the whole Bajoran arc on early DS9.

2
lemmy.world

Futurama! I'm not sure how the new season will be, but I know the old stuff is good.

15

Sure are. Mixed feelings about it, I think one of the reasons it's so good is because they didn't have a chance to milk it to death like the Simpsons

7

Yeah I didn’t know that either wtf. They really shouldn’t do that. The final final final ep was SO good.

3

I've never actually watched futurama. I've seen it a few times at my friends house but never payed it much attention

First 4 seasons before the initial cancelation are gold.

I've yet to finish all the ones that came after the cancelation but there's definitely good stuff there too.

3

They're good, IMO. Season 5 is a bit different, but 6 and 7 feel familiar. They do a lot of parodies of other media. And if I remember right, the end of season 7 competes with some of the classic best episodes. Definitely worth the watch.

I started watching succession recently and I can't stop watching these rich assholes

9

Mr. Robot. I didn't realize that they had added two more seasons since I last watched it. It's been a great watch with all the big internet shifts lately.

9

How come nobody ever told me Battlestar Galactica was so good? I’m on season 2. I love the stories I really love the casting choices (where did they find the actress for Starbuck she’s perfect) but one thing I could do without is the cinematography. Woof

9

I got to have EJO lead a chant for us at comi-con one year and it was incredible.

1

I just started watching BSG for the first time and I'm amazed myself. I love Sci-Fi but never really thought to check it out before for whatever reason

2

The whole show is incredible until the finale. Be ready for some really weird anti-climactic shit to happen and otherwise just enjoy the fuck out of the ride to get there.

1

Fucking hell, you lucky bastard. I'd love to watch Twin Peaks for the first time again. So good.

4

Just finished Nathan for You, I don't know how I never watched it before, it's exactly my type of comedy.

8
lemmy.ca

Taskmaster. I don't think any other show can make me legitimately laugh out loud so much

7
Slatedreply
vlemmy.net

Woah that's crazy! A while back I watched every single task master I could find on youtube. I liked it up until the last couple seasons where I felt it became too scripted... I've never met someone else who's seen it

2

Same here. Honestly the first close to 10 seasons were amazing, but I think they started to run out of really great comedians, and like you mentioned the spontaneity that made it so amazing when it was new started to cannibalize itself with new contestants playing things up to match a comedy formula.

I guess all comedians try to be funny, but the latest series struck me as much less genuine and fun.

2

Absolutely. Season 2 of NZ is probably my favourite of all (including UK)

2
lemmy.world

Modern Family!

I'm already scared for my life once I finish it. The post-show depression will definitely hit a little harder this time.

6

This is a show that my wife and I keep coming back again amd again along with Brooklyn 99!

1
kbin.social

Wife and I are working through scrubs again for maybe the 10th time. Rarely has a bad episode.

6
kbin.social

Such a good show. Very rare for a show to have a really good solid 8 seasons, you usually start to see a decline in quality after season 4.

Season 9 was a spinoff and doesn't count. You will never convince me otherwise!

2

So much rewatchability in one show, when I binged it the first time people caught me looking into the distance mid-conversation.

1

Just finished The Last Kingdom. I recommend Black Sails, Turn: Washington's Spies and The Expanse.

6
Fatbuddhareply
kbin.social

Expanse may be the best show I've ever seen. Might be time for a 3rd rewatch.

I was really enjoying The Last Kingdom, but just kind of stopped... Don't even remember why.

4

The Expanse is probably my favorite; certainly one of my top 5. Like every fan, I recommend reading the books. They moved their subreddit to Mastodon.

TLK can get a little repetitive and characters make obviousy bad decisions, but when you get to the end, the story comes together as a whole. Overall, its a good show.

3
kbin.social

Did the expanse get cancelled or am I misremembering that? I loved it, but once I heard it wasn’t getting renewed I just forgot about it to save myself the trauma.

1

It got dropped by Syfy after three seasons and picked up again by Amazon for a further three seasons. Bezos was apparently a fan. They didn't renew it after that, but it ended in a decent place, closing out a lot of the plot lines while leaving the door open for more. There's some stuff setting up future plot threads that they don't get to address, but it mostly won't leave you hanging. It's well worth finishing.

I won't spoil anything, but adapting the final trilogy would involve some difficult changes and be very expensive, so I suppose it's understandable that they didn't keep it going, as much as that sucks. Maybe one day. There's comics and a Telltale game coming out, so there's still life in it yet. And you can always read the books.

3

I'm about halfway through the first season of Fargo and I am really mad at myself that I waited this long to check it out. Great so far

5

Currently binging Justified in preparation for the new one. I haven't fully rewatched it since it first aired, and I'd forgotten just how awesome it is. I feel like it's a show that got lots of critical praise but never really the viewership it deserved and has been somewhat forgotten, which is sad because it's fantastic. So many awesome characters and so much wonderful writing.

5
feddit.nl

I've just started watching Neon Genesis: Evangelion. 3 episodes in and I'm pretty confused why this is so highly regarded... I'll watch a little more but if the quality continues like this I'll just stop.

5

I had a few friends who non stop talked about it. Finally watched it, same reaction as you.

The quality is actually going to tank near the end. They lost their budget and went off the deep end story wise.

2

definitely not everyones cup of tea, it's controversial for a reason. I still suggest people who aren't getting into it to try to stick with it, because the payoff of watching the final episodes (which were famously so hated it led to death threats), followed immediately buy the end of evangelion film is worth it for the insanity of it all.

if you aren't deeply into it and theorycrafting your way through it by episode 5 or so then you probably aren't going to enjoy the rest. it does ramp up the crazy as it goes on but mostly it leaves things up to the viewer to come up with their own meaning of what it all means, which wont work for some.

If it doesn't click, put it aside for a while then maybe try again by going down the path of the rebuild movies which are an alternate, condensed retelling that tends to be more accessible.

rammy.site

How'd it go?

I'm not into anime but that was on my "one of the greats so you have to watch it" list.

1
feddit.nl

I haven't given up on it yet. My issue is that 90% of the anime so far is angst and melodrama. In my experience 90% of all anime is angst and melodrama so it shouldn't be surprising, but people talk so highly about Evangelion saying it's this transcendent experience and it's just generic mecha anime so far. Except maybe with a dash more soft pedophilia.

2

The Bear. Saw it in one sitting. It's really really great.

5
lemmy.pub

Just finished season 1 of slow horses. It’s solid and very British. I had to look up what the hell a y front was.

4
feddit.uk

I read some of the books first, but Gary Oldman is so utterly, utterly perfect as Jackson Lamb that when I last read one I couldn't help but hear Oldman's voice whenever Lamb had. aline. The TV show is so well cast.

2

Its surprisingly good. My wife and I have watched shows together for years as a decompression method at the end of the day. Most times these days its limited to like 1 show a night.

Unfortunately I am usually tasked with finding new content when we end something. There are times where I or she loses interest and it just becomes something for either of us to watch in our spare time. But I try to keep that rare.

Our rule is 4 episodes before we did. This one....hoooked in the first episode. Got me for the disgusting fart humor (I didnt even recognize oldman), got her with the normal spy/cop/agent things she lies.

3

The Great on Hulu is shockingly entertaining. My wife started watching it because she enjoys that mildly anachronistic and gorgeous/well produced trend lately and it sucked me in way more than I'd have expected.

4

Entourage is by far the trashiest show I like. I feel like almost everything about is objectively terrible, but I love it.

1
SmugBedBugreply
lemmy.iswhereits.at

Rewatched it recently and found it didn't age so well. The homophobic slurs are really jarring. Different times I guess.

1

Yeah I have mixed feelings also. It definitely wouldn't get made with the same script today, but also it is how that demographic talks and it's an excellent snapshot of the materialistic culture of the 2000s.

2

I just finished a rewatch of Jericho. It's the story of a small Kansas town trying to survive after the United States is nuked. It's post 9/11

4

"From" on MGM+. I'm not subscribed, but they have the first season on Amazon. It reminds me a lot of "Lost" with the mystery and trickling answers.

4

Oh nice! Frasier is one of my favorite shows. I've also probably see it well over 100 times over lol. It just never seems to get old

1
beehaw.org

I've been rewatching and binging Whose Line Is It Anyway (the U.S. version). I forgot what a masterpiece this show was. It's an all time classic forsure!

Anyone else love this show or have any others they'd recommend?

3

I LOVE that show, dude. No other show is guaranteed to make me giggle for 20 minutes straight. Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles are comedic geniuses.

Some favorites and good ones to watch

  • The Americans
  • The Office
  • White Collar
  • yellow stone
  • The Peripheral

The Americans is my favorite all time show.

3

It did have a pretty good storyline all the way through. There were some moments I thought could have been done slightly different but it’s still in a top 10 list when asked what is a favorite or watch again list.

2

Black mirror... Since season 6 just came out after 4 years, the second episode made me lose some sleep. Also binging band of brothers, which I've somehow never seen.

2
lemmy.world

Finishing up Star Wars rebels with my wife so she’s prepared for the new Ashoka series, and we also started that 70s Show for the first time. Currently laughing our (dumb)asses off!

2

I tried rewatching it recently, but felt icky knowing what Danny Masterson was doing throughout the course of that show. Couldn't do it.

1

Currently? Game changer on dropout, but recently I finished The Good Place and that's one of my favorite shows now

Edit: Also jet lag: the game on youtube! Very fun show

2

What We Do In The Shadows

Been meaning to watch it for ages and now we're hooked. I'm not usually one to binge watch these days but we watch like 2-4 episodes a day haha

2

I’m rewatching it right now too in prep for the new season that’s dropping next month.

1

I'm watching Chicago Med right now. I'm on season 3 and it's still ok. I like medical shows, I started this one because I read that it had an autistic doctor and I like to check the representation, albeit I get mad more times than I would like

2

Rewatching The Haunting Of Hill House, finished episode 3.

After every episode, I also like to read about the episode recap online for details that I may have missed while watching..

2
lemm.ee

Currently Third Watch, but the next I'm gonna rewatch is ER.

1
lemmy.world

Oh man, I remember that show. I watched it while I was doing emt training, lol. It was fun!

2

I just started season 3 and it's still good. Plenty of post 9/11 rethorics, but still enjoyable

2

All my family used to watch ER since I was very little (actually before I was even born), so it's like a huge throwback for me

1

I had never saw it, shocking I know, but my wife got me to watch it and it's hands down the best show of that genre I think!

2
kbin.social

i suggest Masterchef series if you like cooking, Scrubs, Breaking Bad (u probably watched it already), the good doctor (japanese series, the english one is not that hot), and any number of jdramas and pre-2000 anime.

oh and that medical drama Code Black. it's pretty good.

1

If you like the Masterchef format, watch the Australian one. It's so much better than either the US or UK versions. It's about the cooking and the chefs getting better so much more than just the competitive drama.

1

Wings on my own (on Season 5), and Barry with my wife (just started Season 3).

1

Missed out on "The Wire" for all these years, finally started watching it about 2 weeks ago.

All I can say is shiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeet.
