I'm sure the bar for membership is low, about waist high, but you will have to practice your spinning kick.

Advertisers who don't want to give me money after I literally told them to fuck off

"How can someone I told to fuck off don't want to give me money!? That's literally communism!!"

I donate each time anyways, will double it this time. May Elon choke on an orange hog this Christmas.

38

You mean the orange man's hog? I think it's more the other way around.

Never donated before today. Thanks elon I guess 👍

21

Yeah it's been a while since I last donated and there is some light controversy around how Wikipedia goes about asking for money but I still believe in their mission.

So fuck you Musk, have a twenty Wikipedia.

17
lemmy.world

I’ve never donated to Wikipedia. I have now donated to Wikipedia.

56

This man did more for Wikipedia than those annoying Wikipedia messages could ever do

18

Because any information at all is woke.

This is the idiocracy way.

51

I am a monthly donor to Wikipedia, because I think it's an incredibly important resource. Elon Musk can fuck all the way off.

43

Wikipedia and it's brethren, sharing knowledge are the planet best hopeas a greatbequalizer. We are at the information age, information is power just as much as iron and steam have been in the past.

After reading your coment I've donated 10 euro ; )

15

I had been clicking past the donate reminder so far this year. Thanks for the reminder to get it done today before the new year.

8

Wikipedia is arguably the best website on all of the internet.

Like, if you wanted one website to survive the apocalypse or whatever, it's probably Wikipedia.

37
lemmy.world

Runs platform based on lies and hates platform based on truth. Check notes yeah that about sums it up.

33

Well, I wasn't sure about donating this year, this sealed the deal for me. What an asshole.

32

He looks like he starts all his announcements with an unironic "fellow humans".

Seriously, is he some kind of meat puppet controlled by incel aliens?

25

Oh, great reminder, I didn't donate in a few months, gonna send them a lil Santa coffee gift right now.

25

For those of you with workplace donation platforms, Wikipedia/wikimedia are usually registered and eligible for company match, so is the web archive.

24

I usually donate a low amount, but I'm going to drop a $50 this year now. We know this asshat's threats are random, but we can't risk it.

17

Ah, thanks. I wasn't sure which rich person I was supposed to recognize from this.

So, how many GB to save a complete copy of Wikipedia?

15

I had an uncle who was a rabid Trump supporter. Ultranationalist, White Supremacist and Bible thumper. (its even weirder that my uncle is a Canadian living in the US who refuses to get US citizenship).

he moved to Texas because he wanted to get away from the "morally bankrupt liberals" in California, moved to Texas because Elon went there. I think the only person he loved more than Trump was Elon.

then suddenley, one day he told the family that he wasn't following Elon anymore, and that Elon is evil. I'd really like to hear what he has to say about it. Except there is zero contact because the guy is so deranged he made death threats against my mother. So we're keeping him at length and not giving him any sense of welcome that he can come back into our lives, or worse yet, come visit physically.

still, would be interesting to see into the mind of a lunatic.

15

Xelon is nothing but a drug addict, and he's fuckin' nutzzz!

11

I told myself during my undergrad that if I ever made enough money, I would support a handful of causes. Wiki is on top of that list. I donate $20 monthly so don't feel bad if you aren't able to yet. It takes a village. One day when I'm on a fixed income, someone else can make that lavish $20/month donation :-)

Honestly thought, I need to reevaluate if I can give more. Thanks for reminding me Apartheid Musk!

7

I like Wikipedia but I’m still not going to donate. They’ve got many millions and a bunch of millionaires on the board. They don’t need my money!

6
diffusivereply
lemmy.world

These millionaires may or may not do anything for Wikipedia.

They don’t make profit, there is no risk of “over donating”

4
lemmy.world

The risk is that they vote for higher salaries for themselves! They already earn way more than most people!

-5

These people would earn orders of magnitude more in the for profit industry.

I would really like to retain them given that they are clearly doing a pretty amazing job

3

They are board members of a non profit that is performing splendidly. If the options are to either pay them more or lose them to the private sector I say jjst pay them more.

2
lemmy.world

A while ago he offered to donate something like $100 million to Wikipedia if they changed their name to dickipedia...

5

Seems like for that price someone could write a custom hi that only shows for that one guy. Heck, we could crowd source an entire nazi version that only shows to that one guy

1

First year I change my one time $20 donation to a recurring $2.75 a month. I use wiki and they deserve to be customer funded vs the big corps controlling our free access to information

3

What's the controversy? I mean from what I see, it's a bit pushy, but you only see it if you use Wikipedia

TrickDacyreply
lemmy.world

Honestly doesn't seem like a big deal to me. The concept behind Wikipedia is that it is a self correcting community. There was never a chance no one contributing would have ulterior motives, but that doesn't mean it has a lasting or large impact.

16
rockSlayerreply
lemmy.world

The methods that Wikipedia uses to determine appropriate sources and correcting "bad edits" is highly susceptible to status quo bias from it's home country. This means that Wikipedia has a very heavy bias towards history from a US perspective. In most situations, it doesn't really matter. However if you're trying to look into political research (or anything else controversial) it's a very poor tool. Governments love this setup, because this knowledge manipulation seems innocuous until it isn't.

Edit: since it seems folks are already a couple mugs of eggnog deep, I'd like to clarify my point. There are legitimate and worthwhile criticisms of Wikipedia, but none worthy of mass defunding. We shouldn't let some fascist like Musk control the conversation.

NONEreply

Agree, but cut donation won't resolve such problems, and whatever #SpaceKaren want to happen to the Wikipedia would benefit the US even more in detriment of all the world.

13
rockSlayerreply

Also agreed there. I'm not going to let that cockgobbler co-opt another valid critique for his fascist bs anymore though

The cia and fbi don't have a lasting or large impact...? Are you high?

-1

Are you high? I was obviously saying if someone edits out misinformation, its impact has been abated.
