“RFK Jr: an iconoclast set to shake up a complacent public health establishment.”

"If progressives truly want to bring the surge of polio deaths in the United States to an end they will have to learn to be nicer to our wealthy friends."

46

I’m fucking moving to Canada if this happens. This is one of the best vaccines ever made.

Wait it even the wealthy? Wonder how many wealthy babies need to suffer before the poors can get their world back.

None. The wealthy can just take a trip to another country if it comes to that.

I mean once you have polio no amount of leisurely travel will cure you...?

But if you are wealthy you can take your kid to a doctor in Canada or something to get vaccinated...

What the fuck my grandpa had a skinny leg and a hole in his back from medical tubes due to polio as a kid, this shit is no joke

Seriously. I've said this before here, but travel somewhere the polio vaccine wasn't widely available. The amount of suffering via deformity and impacted development it causes is frightening.

44

Highly recommend watching the documentary "Benda Bilili!" about a group of street musicians in Kinshasa, DRC. They're mostly paralyzed due to childhood polio, but it's a very uplifting doc. They even sang a lovely song on their debut album about it called Polio.

piefed.jeena.net

My dads best friend had polio as a child. He still found a wife and had two wonderful children and a fulfilled life. Just because your legs are crippled, you need leg braces, special shoes and a wheelchair doesn't mean you can't have a great life!

Hell, FDR even managed to be president thanks to his ability to hide his disability from the public

You'd think they're already murdering enough of us with the expensive/delayed/denied healthcare, the starvation wages, the cruel for-profit prisons, the cops, and the refusal to give even emergency abortions...but nope...they want to murder more of us.

He's already got dr Oz lined up in the same position for when he fires Kennedy. I'd bet real money it'll be on the order of 2 months, so mar 1 or so. He loves telling people they are fired, and he think episodically from 15 seasons of the Apprentice show.

You've got some hurt feelings from when we disagreed in another comment, dont you Jeff. You've got to let that stuff go. Your downvotes are not my fault.

If I was downvoted, I missed it. I’m just here to call out inaccurate information

This is a world-laughs-at-you, history-book-making, memes-for-a-century level headline.

America thinks it’s The Federation but really it’s the result of a torrid affair between the Ferengi and the SamaritansPakleds.

Have a nice day, America. This guy was clearly out of reach.

Edit: goofed

The episode of Star Trek: TNG is called "Samaritan Snare". The race is called the Pakleds.

We are Pakleds. Our ship is the Mondor. It is broken.

"No-one even really gets polio anymore, so it's just a waste of money..."

52

This is the kind of argument you see from the dipshit vaccine denialists, though. But typically, they like to credit modern septic systems/clean water for a lot of things.

I think it's really only maybe (younger) boomers and on down that could make the absolutely ridiculous arguments the vaccine denialists make, though. Most of the older people - esp Greatest Generation, but also older boomers, most likely - knew better from having seen children die/suffer from awful diseases.

But yeah, starting with Gen X and on down - the dumbassery around vaccines has slowly started taking off and seems to be getting worse as it goes...

Fuck this idiot piece of shit. Hasn't even started and I'm so sick of this nation again.

49

Seriously. I'm going to be the most bitter and continuously angry person you've ever met by the end of this four years, and I'm not looking forward to it one bit.

Make no mistake though, I'm going to be so free with "aren't you glad this is what you voted for" to magas in my family and at work that the schadenfreude alone will be enough to power a small city.

11

Don't worry, they may only get two years, but the damage they can deal will probably last the rest of your life. And if you're transgender, the rest of your life might even be done before the two years are up.

4

I feel like my "being able to tolerate living in a nation led by imbeciles" meter had barely started refilling this past four years. I think I needed 16 or so for something close to a full recharge. I'm prepared to reach new lows.

MALILA!

(Make America Live in Iron Lungs Again)

Should we be making efforts to preserve guidance pages from cdc.gov, or do we trust that Internet Archive will survive through this administration to provide archived copies via wayback machine?

37

If there's a file of this somewhere for me to archive, I've likely got space.

I've already got Wikipedia, medwiki and a few others in local files as I expect any fascist to destroy information and replace it with whatever suits their narrative

13

Not sure / not that I'm aware of. I was going to see if anyone was working on crowdsourcing an archive via scraping or some similar method. Does Wayback Machine let you download archives, maybe?

3

You won't have to live in an iron lung if your health care provider refuses to cover the cost. See? The system works!

4
lemmy.world

Bitch of it is that we almost drove that virus into irrelevant cycles. I think I read a couple of years ago that the UN believed we could declare victory on the disease by focusing on some suffering African areas. Who knew th at a western country of 300+ million would want to make iron lungs fashionable again? Sorry, Dr. Salk.

35
zephorahreply

The country does not.

A batshit sliver of people do. One of them just happens to be appointed to the Department of Health and Human Services.

This is not a majority stance.

7
krashmoreply

If the result is the same does the distinction matter?

9

Well... The EU further increasing their regulations and punishments on US mega corps would be welcome. Official programs for medical tourism would also be nice, even in countries without universal healthcare the costs are cheaper even with a round trip flight to another continent

We also have a very impulsive and narcissistic manchild about to return to the white house. He's deeply insecure and likes to project - if figures mock and laugh at him publicly enough from the right angle, he'll respond. He's a wildcard so it'll be like hearding cats, but in the absurdist state of the country it could actually help us

Or it can be as simple as treating us like oppressed victims. The US as the land of freedom and opportunity is an image that holds us back... We're not very free and we have very few opportunities (unless you're rich). Chipping holes in that facade really gets to some people

We might be the largest military and economic power, but we're largely brainwashed by optics, and so that's a weak spot that can be exploited

3

The country had a chance to show that though. None of this is surprising.

4
lemmy.world

This administration is going to ruin the lives of/kill so many people.

The upside of Covid is that we jump-started vaccine research and have seen so much stuff at scale, and quickly. It might hold huge promise for things like cancer treatment.

And these absolute fucking clowns are going to probably stall all that out. I sure hope other countries are not impacted in any way by this complete idiocy. The idea that complete morons would kill scientific progress like this is infuriating.

35

Hopefully someone just leaks all of the mRNA technical info so that other countries can make them.

Reading the headline and it literally made me do the meme:

28

I once held a long-standing conviction to wish no harm on anyone, even on people doing harm to others. The reasoning was that it would be better if they were to start doing good instead, so that is what I should wish for them: That they fell compelled to undo their mistake. Their pain doesn't help anyone, so there's no reason to wish pain on them.

But more and more often, I find myself in your shoes.

2

My spanish teacher in middle school had a limp from polio in her childhood and kids would snicker about it behind her back. We have no concept of what polio is anymore

I think the GOP have already proven that they'd rather die than admit they were wrong.

28
AbidanYrereply
lemmy.world

Kind of. Basically nobody remembers how bad it was when polio and smallpox and whatnot were killing people so they think getting a shot is worse than the alternative.

30
lemmy.world

That's one of the big issues I'm having with this, people do remember. Both Mitch McConnell and Neil Young have experiences directly related to polio, and that's just off the top of my head.

That being said the last iron lung polio survivor passed away this year. (Last one so far.)

23
AbidanYrereply
lemmy.world

Sure, not literally nobody, but the younger of the two people you posted is 79. But an insignificant percentage of the population.

6
lemmy.world

I think the point was more that despite their personal experiences, they are still supporting this mindset. So even if it was more widespread, it wouldn't be preventing whatever is causing this "movement".

3
AbidanYrereply
lemmy.world

Vaccination is actually one of the few (possibly the only) areas where McConnell is on the right side of history.

The anti-vax movement isn't primarily 80 year olds.

4

Suddenly I care about Mitch McConnell's health and well-being, in a way I've never felt before.

I've hated that guy since I started reading politics. A world where he's a good guy, needs improvement.

2

In 1955, when the success of the polio vaccine was announced, "Church bells rang, parades were held, and people danced in the streets"

6

If my kid gets some kind of mutated polio that gets around his vaccine from this shit, I know who will be on a list.

16

Maybe they will drag him in court for that one day, for killing Americans in an un-American way, i.e. without bullets.

11

Quick, someone lookup any owners of iron lung manufacturers. It will be one of these schmucks. Always follow the money

10

They know that when it comes down to it you won’t. They know that the older generations are too set in their ways and the younger generation is more concerned about Naughty Dog’s new game. It’s takes very little for Americans to piss and moan on social media but much much mote before mass uprising. There are trillions of dollars to be fleeced from the middle class before any significant resistance arises.
