A growing number of students are leaving school not because they have given up on education, but because they want more of it. They are calculating that the most efficient route to a university place lies outside the classroom.
It's in German but they collected many different solutions for how people who don't have their own house where they can install solar panels permanently still can participate by installing them on their balcony instead.
Until today I didn't know this band existed, but they are releasing a split LP with Less Than Jake soon.
Somehow how difficult life is comes and goes in waves. Right now it's more tough fo me again while I'm approaching 50.
My mother is very sick and the doctors are running out of options, my father got also a terrible diagnosis, the 24h help who works at their home is overwhelmed and is thinking of leaving while me and my siblings are living ver far away and try to deal with all this remotely.
One of my best friends is going though a divorce and is totally destroyed and down and feels alone, its genuinely difficult to get him to see any light at the end of the tunel. Another good friend is after divorce now his ex doesn't let him to see his children and he is panicking and asking for help and advise because I'm also friends with his ex.
And while I got promoted at work it as always resulted in more responsibility and no financial gain and when I had a meeting with my boss he understands my situation but there is no money, we re failing to secure a client and the project will need to let a lot of people go. Theoretically I would be safe because of the extremely strong workers protection in South Korea but that workers protection is also the reason why they started the process of dissolving the Korean legal entity so independent of how good I work I probably will be out of a job before the end of the year. My problem is that I don't speak Korean and all the jobs here require business level of Korean, not sure how I will be able to find a new job.
Oh and in the other project I'm leading which has a customer and makes money three month ago one of the two devs was trying to leave but didn't get the other job and yesterday the other resigned and will be gone in two weeks and takes a lot of knowledge with him even if we have been trying to document as much as possible all the time. And it's in my to come up with a solution for that.
But not all is bad, we are buying our first house and will move in in August. My wife is the loveliest person I could wish for, our children are both healthy and our daughter improved in school imensly during the last school year.
How is your guyses life going? Is it also a constant up and down?
Why does Korea only have those unofficial trashcans made of a plastic bag and some harder plastic poster bend into a circle?
There are no official normal trashcans provided by the municipality, and I always wonder who empties those makeshift ones.
I also wrote about the trash and recycle container situation in a blog post a couple of years ago: https://jeena.net/trash

Just got one of those alarms:
“From Friday, May 29 to Saturday, May 30, due to the Republic of Korea Air Force Space Challenge event, noise from Black Eagles aircraft flights is expected. Please be cautious of possible surprise or disturbance. [Gyeonggi Provincial Government]
And really every two minutes in the morning there was some airplane above us and quite loud.

The findings come as suicide has remained the leading cause of death among Korean youth for 14 consecutive years since 2011, claiming more than three times as many young lives as safety accidents did in 2024.
According to youth statistics released by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family last week, the number of deaths among those aged 9 to 24 stood at 1,749 in 2024. Suicide was the leading cause at 10.9 deaths per 100,000, followed by safety accidents at 3.3 and cancer at 2.6.

Now we already drank 2 of the 5 bottles but this limited edition made me make this post. It's super thick and amazingly flavoufull. Also tastes quite strong. It's very different to what you get at the convenience store, I' surprised how different it is.
My wife said she wanted to buy some which would taste like in her childhood/teenage time, she says the normal ones taste somehow industrial.
I have to say the difference is like the difference between Terra and Chimay. Can only recommend. But it's fresh so can't really shipping it far, only good for 1-2 months it seems.

After traveling to Japan where solo dining always been a huge thing, when coming to Korea in 2015 I was very surprised. I came here with a friend who does not eat pork and that meant that for the whole 2 weeks I was not allowed to order anything pork either because every restaurant would only offer for at least two people.
I think it has changed now quite a bit but apparently not fully.

I get a lot of SMS in Korean, 95% are spam but the last 5% are important ones. I already missed to pay my phone bull twice for months because I didn't realize that the credit card I put there was not valid anymore and they kept sending me SMS about it which I ignored because most of the SMS is spam and copy and pasting everyone into Google Translate is quite a lot of work which is tidious and I just don't do it.
So my idea was to take a open source SMS app like Fossify Messages and add automatic translation to it. And especially because SMS is used for security relevant stuff like 2 factor authentication, I really need the translation to work locally and not on a 3rd party server.
On my PC I have a really really good model the Aya:8b which fits well into the 12 GB VRAM on my RTX3060 and the results Korean -> English are outstanding!
But when I put it on the phone -I have a Samsung S24 Ultra - it fills up the RAM and get's killed quite quickly. I tried to configure it so it's allowed to use more ram for a longer period of time, etc. but even then it's extremely slow and translates like 3 SMS in an hour and I have about 5000 in the database (I only translate the Korean ones).
I tried some other models like Gemma 3 and NLLB-200 which just output garbage, especially the later dropped numbers , URL, codes which are important in SMS translations.
Anyway, does someone have any tips what I could do?
So I feel almost everyone on PieFed/Lemmy/Mbin is against AI, therefor FuckAI is such a big community and so on, and I'm a bit afraid to ask but is there any AI user community on Lemmy where they discuss Harnesses, Agents, recent news and political development out side of FuckAI?
I use it as a cool tool, it helps me implement a lot of small project for which I wouldn't have had time as a dad with a full time job. And I'd like to discuss those things on Lemmy but everywhere I look it's just FuckAI.
