Microsoft learned that if they collected a bunch of data and shared it with the intelligence agencies, while making their OS a telemetry warehouse that tracks nearly everything you do, then they'd be able to attract and onboard the entire US government while making it nearly impossible for them to switch away in the future. At this point forensic companies aren't shy that Windows is the worst choice for privacy.
As an admin it gets so much worse. Twice a year your admin portal gets renamed, redesigned, merged with and/or split from another one, or removed, and all those changes are done halfway.
Which means some settings are only on the old version and others only on the new. Then the old one is discontinued even though the new one doesn't have all its functions, yet.
So you completely rely on Powershell. But wait, there's 2 incompatible versions of it now.

I've been doing linux admin and honestly I haven't been looking back. My breaking point was Microsoft pushing a kb that rebooted domain controllers for no reason.
I love how this doesn't even begin to cover bad kbs ms pushed out. The fact that windows admins think testing updates before deploying them is a routine operation that should always be done boggles my mind.
Oh, and the one that did an in-place-upgrade by itself, then locked your server cause it wasn't licensed for the new OS version.
Wasn't that primarily an issue with a third party software? And the server shouldn't be locked by now since I believe you get a trial period of a few months. Our servers didn't upgrade to 2025 but we use WSUS.
The third party software did exactly what it was designed to do:
Push security updates automatically, while holding back feature updates for testing.
This is standard operating procedure. Security updates are not supposed to change anything about how a server works, so the risk of breakage is very low.
And they need to be installed as fast as possible, to patch holes that are now known to every attacker.
Microsoft were the ones who pushed out a new Server OS installation and labelled it as security update.

It's going to suck because a lot of audio software developers are garbage with Linux support, but if Windows is just as garbage, there's no reason not to migrate.

If I could make a suggestion, try already swapping to FOSS while ok windows to make the transition to linux easier on yourself. That is what I did, and it did wonders to help me become better acclimated to Linux.
You could also see if you can run DAW on a VM in Linux or see if your software is supported with WINE. That way you could potentially just run the windows application in Linux without a VM. Most of the time, a "Silver" rating is enough, but a "Gold" rating or above is recommended.
You don't want to run a DAW in wine or VM. Also, I'm familiar with Linux environment, I just can't live without Directory Opus (mainly) which is a big reason for not switching my main OS away from windows. Also, I've had loads of issues working with my NAS from Linux. In Windows network drives are just visible, in Linux not. Getting access has been a major pain, mostly I haven't been able to get it running with my RasPi. Every time I try a tutorial online I do every step exactly as shown but the result is always different and I get errors no one else ever had (unable to find a solution).
DOpus is one thing I can't really understand why is not ported yet. It comes from Amiga anyway, I understand they might have done a lot of OS-dependent things since moving to Windows, but it should be doable, no?
I've got an Oxi One and go "DAWless" occasionally, but I find it very limiting compared to what can be done in a DAW. I just have to hope Reaper works well in Linux. MIDI routing and what-not is pretty fickle with some of my hardware, now. (Not to mention some software that doesn't work at all in Linux, like Korg's dinosaurific software used to edit NTS-3 settings and patches.) It's a bit terrifying to think what's going to happen with an entirely new OS.
Haha! I was not prepared. I got an NTS-3 recently, and Korg's own software wouldn't recognize it if it wasn't in the first ten MIDI devices in Windows. I had to delete MIDI devices until it got low enough on the list. The 10-MIDI device limit hasn't been a thing for, uhh, decades? I was planning on coding some LogueSDK, but the initial experience has killed almost all desire I have to do that anymore.
Do you mean USB devices? Because yeah, that's a Korg thing. Removing the devices doesn't work for me, I have to delete the data with a 3rd party program, then connect the Korg as one of the first 10 devices while my usb hub is in the back of my synth tower. Next time I boot up my pc, all usb devices are mixed again so big chance the korg is number 23 or something again, making me redo every step. This is why I never have my Minilogue XD updated or why I change banks or effects on it.

I just don't bother anymore, I live with the onboard digital oscillator and effect presets and won't change any of those. The machine is awesome though, wouldn't change it for anything. But the software support is so shit I just don't use it anymore haha
Reaper is available for Linux. I can't vouch for it as I've not used it on there, but I've used it on Mac and it's great. Generally well regarded and is pretty inexpensive.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid my machine isn't capable of running 11. It's a fairly modern machine. AMD 5600X, RTX 3080. 32gb of RAM. I guess it might just be some bios setting I'd need to change to make it compatible, but I have heard precisely nothing about 11 that makes me want to actually do that. Hopefully Microsoft will follow their trend and 12 will actually be good. I doubt it, though.
I initially installed linux on an additional smaller ssd. I recently set out to swap that setup around, so that windows gets to be on the smaller drive.
Except that after moving Endeavour to the big ssd... I just didn't bother with setting up windows again. Haven't needed it yet.

If you're of the "advanced user" kind, you might find it easier to use than Linux - cleaner, much better documentation, ports collection, ZFS without pain or any combination of GEOM classes with UFS (which has snapshots here btw). It's a different OS, but a very pleasant one. Same X (or Wayland), same applications, etc.
One can also use Linux emulation with CentOS 7 or Rocky Linux 9 environment for Linux binaries.

I had just hit the button on a recording session last night, and a fucking full page "ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE EOL OF WINDOWS 10!!" (paraphrased) popped up over my DAW. Yeah, I'm prepared alright Microsoft. I've got a flash drive with Linux ready to install if you keep pulling shit like this. It's going to suck because a lot of audio software developers are garbage with Linux support, but if Windows is just as garbage, there's no reason not to migrate.
Go DAWless. Buy a Synthstrom Deluge for example. Still need a DAW for recording and mastering though :/ I wish there was Ableton for Linux. If I could make a suggestion, try already swapping to FOSS while ok windows to make the transition to linux easier on yourself. That is what I did, and it did wonders to help me become better acclimated to Linux.
You could also see if you can run DAW on a VM in Linux or see if your software is supported with WINE. That way you could potentially just run the windows application in Linux without a VM. Most of the time, a "Silver" rating is enough, but a "Gold" rating or above is recommended.
You don't want to run a DAW in wine or VM. Also, I'm familiar with Linux environment, I just can't live without Directory Opus (mainly) which is a big reason for not switching my main OS away from windows. Also, I've had loads of issues working with my NAS from Linux. In Windows network drives are just visible, in Linux not. Getting access has been a major pain, mostly I haven't been able to get it running with my RasPi. Every time I try a tutorial online I do every step exactly as shown but the result is always different and I get errors no one else ever had (unable to find a solution).
DOpus is one thing I can't really understand why is not ported yet. It comes from Amiga anyway, I understand they might have done a lot of OS-dependent things since moving to Windows, but it should be doable, no?
I just sent them an email begging them to look into a Linux version :)
It's good to bug them about it, but last I checked they just didn't want to.

I've got an Oxi One and go "DAWless" occasionally, but I find it very limiting compared to what can be done in a DAW. I just have to hope Reaper works well in Linux. MIDI routing and what-not is pretty fickle with some of my hardware, now. (Not to mention some software that doesn't work at all in Linux, like Korg's dinosaurific software used to edit NTS-3 settings and patches.) It's a bit terrifying to think what's going to happen with an entirely new OS.

Haha! I was not prepared. I got an NTS-3 recently, and Korg's own software wouldn't recognize it if it wasn't in the first ten MIDI devices in Windows. I had to delete MIDI devices until it got low enough on the list. The 10-MIDI device limit hasn't been a thing for, uhh, decades? I was planning on coding some LogueSDK, but the initial experience has killed almost all desire I have to do that anymore.
Do you mean USB devices? Because yeah, that's a Korg thing. Removing the devices doesn't work for me, I have to delete the data with a 3rd party program, then connect the Korg as one of the first 10 devices while my usb hub is in the back of my synth tower. Next time I boot up my pc, all usb devices are mixed again so big chance the korg is number 23 or something again, making me redo every step. This is why I never have my Minilogue XD updated or why I change banks or effects on it.
Oh shit, really?!? I thought it was USB MIDI devices, not also any USB devices... I only did it the once to update the firmware on the NTS-3. Whelp! Guess I won't be coding any LogueSDK anytime soon if I'm not even going to be able to transfer the results to the machine without a huge pile of hassle. Kinda baffling anyone is coding for it.
Yeah, in the 3rd party program I also see my mouse, keyboard, Webcam, headset, external sound card, Bluetooth dongle, etc listed which I need to remove to get my minilogue within the first 10 devices. I just don't bother anymore, I live with the onboard digital oscillator and effect presets and won't change any of those. The machine is awesome though, wouldn't change it for anything. But the software support is so shit I just don't use it anymore haha
Reaper is available for Linux. I can't vouch for it as I've not used it on there, but I've used it on Mac and it's great. Generally well regarded and is pretty inexpensive.
Reaper is my DAW of choice, actually. I haven't tried it in Linux, though.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid my machine isn't capable of running 11. It's a fairly modern machine. AMD 5600X, RTX 3080. 32gb of RAM. I guess it might just be some bios setting I'd need to change to make it compatible, but I have heard precisely nothing about 11 that makes me want to actually do that. Hopefully Microsoft will follow their trend and 12 will actually be good. I doubt it, though.

I initially installed linux on an additional smaller ssd. I recently set out to swap that setup around, so that windows gets to be on the smaller drive.
Except that after moving Endeavour to the big ssd... I just didn't bother with setting up windows again. Haven't needed it yet.
For audio specifically you might find FreeBSD easier to set up. As a DAW, not as a desktop in general.
ALSA+PulseAudio\Pipewire+JACK are kinda messy compared to newpcm+JACK .
Well, the PC isn't used only as a DAW, so I might still need Linux as opposed to FreeBSD. I've been running some form of Linux for a long time, now. I've never tried FreeBSD. Don't even know what it is, actually.
If you're of the "advanced user" kind, you might find it easier to use than Linux - cleaner, much better documentation, ports collection, ZFS without pain or any combination of GEOM classes with UFS (which has snapshots here btw). It's a different OS, but a very pleasant one. Same X (or Wayland), same applications, etc.
One can also use Linux emulation with CentOS 7 or Rocky Linux 9 environment for Linux binaries.
It's a descendant of BSD, and things like Ultrix and SunOS 4 were BSD, so one can say it's the most commonly used thing of what feels like Unix today (after Linux).

Haha! No, I understand. I rave about something I like, too, and then immediately feel like a salesperson or something. I'm not a power user exactly, but I can usually figure things out pretty quickly and have no trouble typing commands into a terminal and slinging a little code. I'll have to look into what kind of audio people are doing in Linux and see where it takes me.

Their version of the Recall is called "Skylight" and is an extension of their full local AI "Peephole", for which a lot of companies pay specific licencing fees of the input data it is trained on (depending on their needs & quality of selection).
