I didnt even see the lol at the end, its like punctuation to me by now lol

I have to check my previous couple messages to make sure I didn't add "lol" at the end of them so I don't make it weird by saying lol too much

Lol

I’ve caught myself doing it multiple times in one message before. 😔

I'll stop doing this when we make a new punctuation that conveys my need for people to like me lol

63
lemmy.world

We did, they're called emojis.

Gen z seems to have figured that out, too. They use emojis like punctuations, in much the same way we use lol. I was annoyed by it at first but I got used to.

17

I'm pretty sure Millennials never caught onto that because we either used emoticons, or were traumatized into thinking that emojis were somehow "girly". So the lol or lmao ended up being the way to show emotion/sentiment.

It was because there were all kinds of tacky and terrible looking emoticon packs back then, pretty much everyone agreed you looked like a dork. Nowadays they are used to produce shitposts.

8

Everyone who used them back in the day had malware too.

Google dawt cawm… Fun smily face pack 4 chat on yahoo and aim Download Ooh, desktop strippers? Sweet! I’ll go ahead and get that too. Oh no way, a purple ape assistant! Sweet, lemme git that. I’ll be ur buddy bonzi.

Remember porn dialers? They’d call 1-900 numbers in the background when your computer was idle and make parents really angry.

At least I think that’s what they did.

3

I use emojis when talking to specific people, lol with others and some I don't use any text slang at all.

Strangely because I grew up with lots of phpBB forums, the few of them that I still engage with for things like classic cars and farm talk I always use the emojis because that's what we always did

those don’t look very loud

3

What? Are we out of sync? As a millennial I use a lot of emoji, and gen z'ers almost don't use any, and tell me it's cringe to use them.

1

Gotta add it to lighten up the dark thoughts and the implications of the message lol

I use "haha" when I actually laugh out loud, since "lol" just means "I'm not being serious" or "I'm mildly amused right now" these days, even though it is literally an abbreviation for laughing out loud.

10
lemmy.ml

I used to end every sentence with lol

I mean, I still do more often than I'd like to admit lol

31

I don't even need to I'm used to it after doing so for so many years lol

4
lemmy.nz

I switched to 'haha' instead when I caught myself saying lol in real life, haha

27
lemmy.eco.br

I try to write the extended "Lots of Love" now instead of shortening it to "lol" every time.

26

lol, that's silly. I do it at the start so that I can punctuate with an ascii emoticon, even in forms of communication where it's not supported. ;)

25

Lol then I forget I added it at the beginning and end up making an awkward sandwich lol 🥴.

  1. Guess my age. :)

  2. Guess my age (:

  3. guess how old I am 💀 no 🧢

2

I've literally been called out on using lol on Lemmy. Probably ~3 months back or so?

I forget how I responded, but it definitely would've had lol in it a few times just for emphasis.

Guys, we're on knockoff reddit, not a debate forum. Having a few lols when pointing out hypocrisy or incorrect shit with citations is just the creme of the lol crop.

Hi guys my wife left me and I have to put my dog down LOL

19

I recently noticed that I switched from adding lol to inserting an emoji at the end 😅

18

I preferred emoticons. There are too many emoji. Too many of them are meaningless. No matter what platform you're on, you have to SLAM typing to a halt to go into a separate menu to pick one out.

5

Same :)

I also get unreasonably annoyed when an application replaces my ASCII emoticons with emojis.

2

Fuck you stop calling me out, I’m 100% serious. Stop. lol

And you added punctuation! Classic millennial lol.

What's the origin of this meme? It looks like when Peter Parker was bit by the spider in Spider-Man 1967.

7

I just scanned through my collection and found it! S02E01 The Origin of Spiderman around 5m23s.

8

Imagine using lol in 2024. That's so sad. Xdlemao

6

I figure I'd quit when my parents start using it, just like how I quit Facebook lol

6

I don't think I've ever done that. I've always used normal punctuation, except for in my teens, where we all used ellipsis (…) at the end of every sentence to indicate that more was coming. ICQ was the shit. Messaging apps even copied this by adding a bouncing ellipsis when you're typing. Maybe that's why we stopped using it.

5

I haven't used "lol" in a long time, but started to do this earlier today and had to stop myself.

I feel seen.

4

I'm a millennial and I've always preferred to say haha since like the last year or two of msn. Think I last used lol when I had a T9 phone

4
lemmy.world

Dammit I was hoping we wouldn't get memes based on us as we were there when the memes were conceived.

4

Think it's cause I'm a slow texter but I've never had the issue. Might also just be due to a lot online chats not really using it anymore.

Do you guys remember when lol was the response you would receive to a message? I wonder when we started switching to saying it on the end of our sentences?

2
sh.itjust.works

Does it count that I actually say lol in spoken conversation? I pronounce it laul and not lole. I know a loler though...

As a millennial, I think most of Gen Z slang is amazing, they got us beat imo
