My son impressed his friends with wobbly windows the other day. Got to introduce him to the cube.
Not related, but why do most of the comments here have several user accounts tagged/linked?
This is a masto post
Sounds like they're masto toots?

A fancy new overview!
@[email protected] @[email protected] Can I use my Gmail account in Kmail now?
@[email protected] @[email protected] Apparently, the answer is "No, I can't use Gmail with Kmail in Plasma 6".
Booted the current Fedora 40 nightly KDE ISO. Using "Online Accounts" did not set up my Gmail account in Kmail. Kmail found the account in Mozilla's database when I tried to create it directly in Kmail. I was led through a dialog that ended with a display of server info with a "Previous" and a "Quit" button. The account was not created. #KDE #Plasma6
@Corb_The_Lesser @kde @[email protected] yeah the new wizard had to be completely rewritten for Qt6 and still requires a bit of work and testing with various email providers. 😔
I thought it was working years ago via IMAP. Is that not working now or do you mean using another method?
Google eliminated IMAP years ago in favor of OAuth and their API. Thunderbird kept up, I think. KMail didn't
Im using my gmail account in kmail literally right now, what do you mean?
Teach me your ways, senpai. I've tried and couldn't get it to work.
@[email protected] may have worked with Kmail occasionally in the past. I think sometimes that involved going back to your Google account and telling it to accept an "unsecure" app. To be honest, I wouldn't do that for an email app.
Elementary has the same problem with its mail app.
Because the problem is Google not wanting third party apps accessing their service.
Edit: In other news, I just tried it and GMail works just fine with KMail. Setting up is a three step process and automatic most of the way.
@Bro666 I tried it on Fedora 40 with Plasma 6. Don't know if it's broken there or not. In any case, the account wizard repeatedly showed me a screen with only a back and quit button when the account hadn't yet been created.
Also kept telling me I had set up 2 accounts and asking if I'd like to unify them.
Haven't heard this one before, but it sounds like a trip to https://bugs.kde.org to me. Check if it hasn't been reported. Maybe also check on Fedora, as it may be something going on there.
Thanks for your help!
Crazy how Fedora will get such a stable Plasma 6 when 40 comes out, nearly 2 months left.
I tested Plasma 6 on rawhide, reported a bunch of bugs and in the end everything was fixed.
@kde @[email protected] The cube! 🧊😄👏
Fedora 40 also has it
@const_void tested fedora rawhide in a virtual machine few weeks ago with plasma 6, run well enough
@zestygrass @[email protected] @[email protected] I’m waiting for it on my endeavouros install
@[email protected] @[email protected] can't wait to try it on arch!
If you're willing to try the kde-unstable repo until its out, you can try it today. A few things are broken but they're not showstoppers and mostly graphical (i also havent been able to use my computer today so i dont know if a lot of it got fixed with today's release.)
Let's gooo! Can't wait to install it
Compiz and Beryl live on in spirit.
This makes me reminisce about Sabayon Linux.
Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.
@[email protected] @[email protected] desktop cube?!?!
@[email protected] @[email protected] I'm running debian 12 on my laptop... and I might move over to this soon. How easy is it to remove all that padding around the taskbar and such? I imagine the old themes still work, but I'll take a look. It's pretty otherwise.
If I remember right old themes do need a port
@ward @[email protected] @[email protected] you can disable the floating panel in Edit Mode
edit: for the record, a floating panel will revert to non-floating mode if a window touches it
@[email protected] @[email protected] Kongratulations 🎉👏👏 woohoo 🎉
Awesome, can't wait to try it out!
@[email protected] @[email protected] I JUST INSTALLED 5 YESTERDAY WHAT
@[email protected] @[email protected] I'm excited to try it out in a few months when it hits the repos 💖
@[email protected] @[email protected] would I be correct in assuming that it's now available in the Arch repo?
It's in the testing repo right now, but I'd expect it in the main repo pretty soon. End of the week, give or take.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Yes! Desktop cube is back!!!!
@jocarren @[email protected] @[email protected] Nextcloud integration icon saying everything is synced
That is my laptop. It is the Nextcloud integration app. The tick means everything is synchronized.
@jocarren @[email protected] @[email protected] Weather forecast?
@theswaeg @jocarren @[email protected] @[email protected] I bet it ist the @nextcloud client.
LONG LIVE KDE!
What? How? Will it check the local package manager database?
New versions of Kdenlive are released at regular intervals. When release day comes around, you'll get a notification.
@baduhai @kde because the version number follow the date. So if you are running 24.02.5 (published around May 2024) in 2026 something is wrong :)
Makes sense, but I'm fairly sure that would be a February 2024 release :)
That would make sense...
@[email protected] @[email protected] Can someone explain to me why having a cube to rotate is better than the classic desktop switching views? 🤔
It isn't better or more efficient. Some people think it's cool. I don't you don't. Some think it's cool and that's ok.
@unlucio @kde @kde do you not remember how cool Compiz was ? How it made the Mac users jealous and the Windows users weep
#geek
@unlucio @[email protected] @[email protected] well its one of those classic features people wanted back. Probably because its fun and visually appealling
For me it made it easier to visualise which desktop had which thing on, so I knew the front face of the cube was my main desktop and my email was on the face to the right.
The default way for some reason never really clicked with me the way the 3d cube did
Apple did something like that, I guess in the first version of fast user switching for OSX.
On the bottom of the page containing the cool rotation animation, they wrote "Because we can.'
That's it in a nutshell.
@unlucio @[email protected] @[email protected] Well, it's a "in the eye of the beholder" situation. Neither is better, it's just what each person prefers. I quite like the cube, mainly because of the way in which I can perform 4-or-more-way desktop checking.
@[email protected] @[email protected]
thanks for all the answers, long story short seems like the reason might be "aesthetics".
Personally, I'm happy if something works great, and is also visually pleasant, but I'd never
"Sacrifice speed and efficiency on the altar of beauty"
@kde @kde "let you know when there is an update available without even requiring an internet connection."
How does that work. Because sounds implausible...
#linux #kde
KDE has a schedule for its major releases.
@[email protected] @[email protected] the alt text on the third screenshot is wrong, should be gwenview
Congratulations and thanks to everyone who worked on it!
@[email protected] @[email protected] KDE, my beloved. Thank you folks for offering me one of the best desktop environments for linux. Only distro I get, I always want KDE. :)
@[email protected] @[email protected] new wallpaper is 🔥🔥🔥
@[email protected] @[email protected]
Blur effect is by default?
That's Cyberpunk 2077.
Thanks!
@[email protected] @[email protected] they're doing the goddamned cube again
@[email protected] @[email protected] Congrats 👏🎉 !
@[email protected] @[email protected] awesome! Congrats with the new release 😃
@[email protected] @[email protected] Wooohooo. Party time. 🎉
#Plasma6
@[email protected] @[email protected] hopefully this hits the @opensuse repos soon!
[
yayintensifies]@[email protected] @[email protected] That looks awesome! Makes me wanna ditch Windows and give (Arch?) a spin! 🔥
@[email protected] @[email protected] Congrats!
@[email protected] @[email protected] I almost switched to KDE from XFCE because I wanted a desktop with a bit "more" but it ran like crap on my PC. Idk if it is because of KDE issues or my GTX 960 is just too old.
Not the GPU itself but rather its drivers. Plasma 6 flies on potatoe laptop integrated graphics in power saving mode.
I'd say the GTX 960 is unlikely to be the bottleneck. Plasma really does not need a recent GPU.
@leopold That's the thing though, I built the current PC during the pandemic and crypto craze. Everything is relatively new, except the GPU, because I couldn't afford one, but I needed a better CPU for audio recording and editing.
do you use an SSD? from my experience, that can make a really big difference with Plasma
@be @leopold That might be it as I use the proprietary drivers. I’ll just stick to XFCE.
@be @leopold I'll probably just stick with XFCE for now.
that is definitely not the case. that would make the plasma wayland session essentially unusable on nvidia, even though many users have reported it working fine.
When was the last time you used KDE? It's been able to run on low-spec machines since KDE4 which about a decade old
last time I used KDE was today. you probably meant to reply to someone else, tho.
woops, indeed 😇
I run KDE 6 on Core 2 Duo with Nvidia 9400/nouveau.
@shanesemler @[email protected] @[email protected] For what it's worth: I still run KDE Plasma 5 on a core 2 duo and a period correct low tier gpu, it won't blow your socks off, but it works fine, and i have no reason to believe that 6 should perform worse.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Plasma 6 is looking absolutely awsum. Aannd.. THE CUBE IS BACK !
awesome, lessssgo!!
@[email protected] @[email protected] Congratulations on this milestone! Been hearing positive feedback from people who’ve used it already, can’t wait to get my own hands on it :ablobcatbongo:
@[email protected] @[email protected] fuck yeah
@[email protected] @[email protected] Can't wait to check this one out! Godspeed KDE!!
@kde @[email protected] did you finally fix dual monitor support?
@[email protected] @[email protected] It's such a shame i can't get to try it because i don't have a computer :/
@[email protected] @[email protected]
Congrats on the release! 🎊
Floating Taskbar :neofox_cute_reach:
@[email protected] @[email protected] a Big step for you!
