KDE supports the "Keep Android Open" campaign

#Google will cut off independent developers to #Android if they do not register with Google first. This will kill independent platforms like @[email protected] and severely impede FLOSS devs from creating apps for Android.

Many KDE apps are deployed for Android: KDE Connect, Itinerary, Tokodon, and there's even a test version of Krita for Android.

KDE calls on Google to reverse course and @[email protected].

Spread this post and, if you are the maintainer of a software project with versions for Android, please join us and sign the open letter at:

GCompris, KDE's collection of educational activities, publishes version 26.0

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.kde.social/post/5524279

The collection comes with 197 activities, including 2 new ones: "Drawing wheels", an activity for drawing with a gear rotating in a cogwheel; and "Multiple choice questions", an activity that can be enabled through GCompris-teachers (see below).

https://gcompris.net/news/2026-02-04-en.html

But probably the biggest news it the official release of GCompris Teachers, a companion application for teachers that lets you create customized datasets and receive pupils results for some activities.

Check out the full release announcement here:

https://gcompris.net/schools-en.html#gcompris-teachers

And download the teachers' manual from here:

https://docs.kde.org/stable_kf6/en/gcompris-teachers-handbook/gcompris-teachers-handbook/gcompris-teachers-handbook.pdf

Is Free Open Source software GCompris made by volunteers and is fully translated to 23 languages, but has nearly full translations for double that.

Petition to get FLOSS contributors the same rights and status as other volunteers in other fields

This petition wants contributing to Free Software to be legally and officially recognized as volunteering in Germany on the same level as youth work or ambulance service:

https://www.openpetition.de/petition/online/recognition-of-work-on-open-source-as-volunteering-in-germany#petition-main

This would bring fiscal and funding advantages for FLOSS organizations and the volunteers themselves.

If you are a German citizen, please sign the petition and let's get our volunteers the recognition they deserve!

Do you have something similar in your country? Why not help your national FLOSS projects get the status and support they often desperately need? Start your own petition!
