Save up, go on a nice holiday overseas.

Save up, buy a house.

Take up a new expensive hobby like cycling or photography.

Donate to charity.

Donate to worthy political causes.

Get a dopamine hit from seeing number go up.

So many options.

78

Fund a random Twitch streamer's life while you stay at home doing nothing.

76

Become a patron of the arts and help some students through university.

Work less.

Withdraw it in coins to throw at poor people.

2

Buy another truck full of Muscle Men, then make floorplans using dominoes pieces, and have the army men fight the muscle men.

Aren't men die in 1 hit. Muscle Men die in 3 hits. MM are melee only, AM mostly have range. Line of sight matters.

Or, your know, don't copy what I did as a kid, and make your own rules. Whatever, man!

Dunno I made 12k selling my cards back in 2019. Played back in the revised/ice age days

"time travel to 1994 and play mtg, save the cards for 25 years then sell!" Great advice for anon :)

I've been in this situation.

Get married to a single mom and you'll be broke again in less than a year and in debt the next. That's the quickest way to lose all of your money.

57

Didn't go the single mom route, but a wife and kids takes care of the free time and money problem.

27

Single family cruise costs as much as everything OP purchased put together.

There are way too many comments in this thread for it to be okay that yours is the only one mentioning investing for retirement.

Just goes to show you how few of your peers are actually saving for retirement

12

Right? I’m baffled I had to scroll down this far for a mention of investing, which was my immediate answer, after reading the greentext. And it’s absolutely the thing everybody should be doing with part of their money

4

And make sure you educate yourself on what colleges your kid is looking into. It sure would suck having all the 529 money get sucked into a scam school that generates debt for unexchangeable course credits.

2

Also, if you are technically self-employed, 401k + self-employed IRA provides a lot of room for more tax benefits. If you manage to fill those, then you can always open a brokerage account to put additional savings.

Broad market index funds are a popular choice.

Eventually retire so you have time to play those video games and get sleep.

2

I'm all for it.

Support ethical porn sites that meet their actresses and actors with the respect they deserve.

Depends on character traits of anon.

Some invest/gamble

Some hoard wealth

Some uses it fight boredom like going to places, travelling, hobbies, etc.

Some try sharing with others or straight up doing charities

29
lemmy.world

If all of my money had gone into a charity it would have been, “Junkies Helping Junkies Not Get Dope Sick No More”. :p

Here at junkies, we split shots. We don’t get high. You found some dope on a gas station floor? Three people won’t get sick today. Or, Brenda will convince you that her tolerance is insane because of a recent stay at the hospital, she’ll get half and we’ll split half. She’ll nod out and she won’t be welcome at Junkies Helping Junkies Not Get Dope Sick No More no more.

For real though, been sober for at least a decade at this point. It is crazy how much money people burn through with that little hobby. I don’t miss that life and I’m thankful to be away from it, so if I did accidentally become wealthy I’d give some back to the community that helped me get here. I’d drop by some local AA and NA groups and drop a pile of money under the 1s pretty often.

4

If you are young and there's nothing you really want to do with a significant amount of money, your emergency savings are decently big, and you don't intend to make a significant purchase in the near to mid future, then you find yourself a tax-free retirement account, a world index fund and an S&P 500 index fund and distribute money across them with the priority being reaching whatever is the max in the first one

Gacha games are better. At least you get something 👍👍

  • Save an emergency fund of 6-12 months of expenses. You never know when the rug will get pulled out from under you.
  • Pay off all debts.
  • Save at least 15% of income into retirement accounts (not counting any matches).
  • Give to charity or random internet persons.
  • Buy a house.
  • Pay it off.
  • Max all retirement accounts, invest in some mutual funds, give more.
24

consider also investing in your community. find local organizations or mutual aid networks, help friends out and in general find ways to build other people up so that they can be there for you if you ever fall on hard times.

Unironically anon has cracked the big secret of capitalism; the end goal doesn't matter until someone is trying to steal it from you, and they will try because some people are sick in the head

20
kbin.social

the big secret is that money is not the end goal. money is merely a tool to let you do other things you want to do. it's not an end, just a means.

13

I was going to disagree based on culture, but my disagreement really just boils down to that being a way bigger secret. So i guess you right.

2
WhiteHawkreply
lemmy.world

Not really, there's plenty of things you can spend your money on if you have goals and hobbies.

2
shani66reply
ani.social

Anon already did that, good hobbies don't necessitate a constant flow of cash

3

There's an incredible gap between having 10's of thousands of dollars from a couple years of working a job with low expenses and a habit of not spending money and buying a fucking house lol

5

Because they have spare money, and only mentioned spending money on frivolous shit, rather than food, rent and bills.

5

It goes without saying. If he was in my country I would assume he is paid 2500€ a month and only pays 500$ for rent so there is plenty left

3

Give some of it to poor people. Being disabled in this country sucks.

11
Franklinreply
lemmy.world

Use the money to lobby politicans to pass social assistance for the disabled

22

And give some money to the disabled, since they need it faster than that.

1

What country? There are other countries than the US "the greatest country in the world"

2

Much easier to give it to some rich people. They've got money disposal services all over the place.

We are sunsetting Google House in accordance with our wider goal of shutting down everything. You will be evicted on march 2nd, 2024 and all buildings will be demolished between march 31 and june 1st. Thank you for being with us for this project!

Why god?

We launched Google House 7 years ago as an attempt to make shareholders think we are still capable of doing something useful. As we focus on making new short-lived products to perpetuate this lie, we no longer have the resources to maintain our rent collection system.

What will you do with the land?

We didn't think this far but the current plan is to leave them as gravel sanctuaries.

10

But you said I purchased the house? I paid $300,000 for the house and now you say you can take it back???

1
lemmy.ca

Well, life keeps kicking me in the balls and I currently need about $5000 to get back on track thanks.

9

I've broken my PC, Phone, and chair and have been trying to save money to get them fixed for the last 4 months and every time I get extra money something sets me back.

Most recently? Covid. Gotta use saved money to survive while not getting paid. Things are real fuckin neato.

2

Somebody’s got all my devices hacked and I don’t have the money to replace them. I’ll implement some basic security shit but I really think they’ve got my shit rooted.

Unfortunately, this same jackass uses his billions to subtly influence every company I have to route me into shit work and make me fail. For example right now I work retail, and the sequences of customers that show up and waste my time is too non-random to believe. Again and again, the moment one non-buying customer finally relents and let’s me go, the next one shows up within five seconds.

So I can’t get ahead to get the money to get my devices un-hacked. It sucks.

A long time ago, before he made the money, I remember we had a debate about whether a billionaire could prevent an ordinary person from succeeding. I argued that they couldn’t, that our society is a free one and that a rich person targeting a poor person couldn’t result in that poor person being unable to succeed.

Now he’s showing me wrong. And I don’t think he’s going to let up.

1

Enjoy the fact that there’s more and more money in your bank account? I personally find solace in that fact.

7

Don't let it sit in your bank account, you're wasting its value. After you built up an emergency fund, invest the rest.

6

Hop on Kickstarter, go to the D&T section and back the first thing you see. A fun way to melt money.

Every kickstarter I’ve backed (72) has delivered eventually. But yes, RIP my $8k. Now I have a dope ass board game library

2

Buy Twitter.

Or if you like something more adventurous, put half into developing a time machine and then half into repeating bitcoin speculations, accumulate them on a secure usb drive with s password protection, forget password and then give teams of world renowned hackers limited tries to break it. I've read about the last part a couple of months ago. They bought the same drives and claim that they reverse engineered them on a hardware level to get the idea how their software protection works. Yet, there just two tries left and the guy is not fast to reach an agreement.

4

God this was me when I lived at home. Now 70% of my paycheck goes to my landlord. I'm still able to save because I'm frugal as heck but holy shit it would be so much easier without my landlord fucking me in the ass monthly.

3

Use it to fund missions where you save people from starvation and dying of thirst.

If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, just find some charities to donate it to.
