A long video of one person's opinion about "algorithmic complacency"

Reply in thread

I'm in that age bracket and one of my best friends, about a month ago, started using chatgpt instead of a search engine.

We went to dinner after work and the place was closed. I went back to my car to grab something and when I got back he was fiddling with his phone and frustrated. He said 'i'm trying to figure out (using chatgpt) if this other place is open.'. I just opened Google maps, it had the opening hours and I clicked directions and we were on our way.

Known this guy forever and I found it weird he would think that was better.

I learned one morning that a cmos battery could become a resistor. It can fail in a way that it's not working nor completely dead but passes just enough current to make a server motherboard that otherwise might A: Work, B: detect it's dead/missing and boot anyway with defaults to instead C: just freeze and not do anything. That was a fun full day of time wasted.

It's time for Reddit to die

I was looking up a review of a mediocre tech gadget the other day. It turned out it sucked, in research Google took me to Reddit and every third post about it was a glowing "I use blah every day and it works perfectly for my needs and I'm glad I bought it." The negative posts were obviously real with details about annoying quirks and the very positive posts were obviously AI/sponsored. And it reminded me why I left and how normal this has become.

FIV+ cat tips?

We had an FIV+ for many years. He had weepy eyes now and then that we used to wipe but other than that he was very normal and not prone to random illness.

We have him lysine and forti flora later in life that seemed to help him. But that was for older cat pancreas issues.

He was an outdoor cat back then and strong generally. Our current cats are now indoor only.

Sometimes I wonder if the "Quantum Immortality" thought experiment is actually real... considering how many times I could've died.

There is a great book by Katie Mack called The End of Everything. She runs through all the top theories like this. It's quite enjoyable.

One of the theories about the universe repeating has that ponderous nature that if this moment will be repeated forever any good thing you can do help someone will be repeated forever so if you have a choice to help or not you should think about that action being cemented forever. She doesn't go into free will and such, there are many other theories.

Would conservative audiences believe a targeted mis/disinformation campaign about AI being capable of helping men become pregnant?

Part of the childbirth freedom and democracy act. Did you know that a womb isn't actually needed to give birth. Scientists at the UofT theorize that the organ is a left over from ancient days when babies needed more protection from daily danger. Now in our totally safe society it's redundant and men can just gestate babies in the space between their organs. Of course c-section is the preferred method of delivery but the alternative is not insurmountable.
