thanks for sharing, i was hoping for more specifics to experiment with; i have a powershell script i'm running that does the same thing:

    try {
        ffmpeg -y -hwaccel nvdec -i "$input" `
            -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? `
            -c:v h264_nvenc -preset slow -rc vbr -cq 21 -b:v 0 `
            -pix_fmt yuv420p `
            -c:a aac -b:a 160k `
            @subtitleArgs `
            "$temp"

        if ($LASTEXITCODE -eq 0 -and (Test-Path $temp)) {
            $encoded = $true
        }
        else {
            throw "GPU encode failed"
        }
    }
    catch {
        Write-Warning "GPU failed -> CPU fallback"
        Add-Content $logFile "GPU failed, CPU fallback: $input"
        $gpuFallbackCount++

        ffmpeg -y -i "$input" `
            -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map 0:s? `
            -c:v libx264 -preset slow -crf 20 `
            -pix_fmt yuv420p `
            -c:a aac -b:a 160k `
            @subtitleArgs `
            "$temp"

        if ($LASTEXITCODE -eq 0 -and (Test-Path $temp)) {
            $encoded = $true
        }
    }

thanks for sharing, nicely done, would love a video or dB reading. noise wise, my rack doesn't get too bad running mini-itx boards and quadro p2200s; my gaming rig, on the other hand, could benefit from this. SFF case with a deshrouded rx 6650 xt and 80mm server fans from arctic (max 8000rpm). it sounds like a jet engine spinning up when i play anything, despite the 3000rpm limit i put in fan control.

aside, would you mind sharing your av1 settings? i currently pass everything through ffmpeg to mkv in an attempt to save space with my plex library

but kinda want to make my own in the end.

for sure. the workflow i would suggest is:

  1. read / study references
  2. deploy a theme you like, poke at it and play with it
  3. try to rebuild it from scratch using current knowledge. copy/paste not allowed
  4. consult reference materials for parts you get hung up on
  5. repeat until functional
  6. polish and stylize

it's how i did it when i was a kid; but again, this may be an archaic approach compared to modern standards

not being facetious, but check your local library; anna's too, if the selection is sparse

edit: also, something that helped me understand the foundations/mechanics of html/php/css was taking free bootstrap themes, reading the source code, and then trying to rebuild them using my own code

What is your internet White-Whale?

one of mine is an old flash video that i think i remember was on newgrounds, that had a black guy and a white guy talking to each other.

the only things i can remember is the black guy saying, "i feel ashamed and neglected," and white guy saying "I WILL NOT STOP UNTIL I GET THE ANSWERS THAT I CRAVE"

it's been a long while since i've messed around with any of it seriously, so forgive me for being outdated 😅 but i remember enjoying the stucture of the ... for Dummies books

as for themes, i remember buying a few from creative-tim.com for various projects after dissecting their free ones

Should i switch to linux? please tell me why or why not.

i cut my teeth on linux mint with cinnamon before moving to garuda dragonized. it was my daily driver for the last four years, then i switched to proxmox and just run everything on VMs 🤷

lots of resources and documentation available for mint, but it's pretty turnkey. best advice i'd give to a newfriend is make sure you read any articles or documentation start to finish, instead of trying to follow along. also, employ good backups practice: learn what timeshift/snappy is, how it works, and how to use it.

taking a backup before making big changes has saved my ass more than once
