The Problem with Linus Tech Tips: Accuracy, Ethics, & Responsibility

Reply in thread

Yes! The Linux coverage from LTT is positive and encourageing UNLESS Linus is in the video then he looks for any excuse to raise his voice and yell "this is stupid" or "its going to break on me in 5 minutes". Emily's very good coverage of PopOS back in 2019 ish got me into Linux and I have not looked back. Its disappointing to see how with many things (not just Linux) how Linus will change the direction of a video to be more entertainmenting/clickbaity at the cost of good information and quality.

The point of the film is to show how horrible war is in a context Americans can relate to. If they made a more realistic alliance, down some sort of real life right / left politics the message would be lost and it would be held up as some sort of propaganda film by one side of politics with the other side using it to justify why they're correct.

So, yes the "alliance between the California and Texas" is a very deliberate choice.

Off the top of my head, rope to put down Gide lines in case you get silted out so you have something to follow to get out.

Also extra everything, if your open water diving and you run out of air (or other critial equipment failure) you can roll the dice on the bends by going straight to the surface, not so with cave diving; your just going to drown.

Year of Linux on the Desktop

Reply in thread

I second popos and mint. I love fedora but if he is a gamer you want something that will just work (navida built in or a very easy one click mechanism to get it). If he has to research PPAs and installing rpmfussion it will get all too hard very quickly. Also do some expectation setting before hand, research what games he plays work on linux, better he finds out now rather than after 2 hours of pain or getting band for "hacking" because of proton triggered an anti-cheat thing.

Edit: I run fedora on all my machines except my gaming rig which is popos. Fedora works too but popos is hassle a free experience.

Hi Astrophysics,

I always wondered why they draw black holes like they do in that the accretion looks like it's drawn in two planes. I would have thought it would have looked a bit more like a saturns rings? Or is it exactly like saturns rings but we see the whole ring bent round the top because a black hole bends the light around so we can see it? Or is it something else entirely that they are trying to depict here?

GAFAM removed successfully

Reply in thread

From memory the UK gov is trying to (or has?) pass anti-encription laws targeting the big tech giants GAFAM (google, apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft). I am in Australia so not up to date with this.

Its hard to tell from the icon pack they are using but I think this might be a screenshot from a degoogle phone? For example I don't see any Facebook or Microsoft specific apps. But I do see a nextcloud app which is an open source self hostable replacement suite for Google's cloud apps.

Basically the law change won't affect them as they are not using any GAFAM apps/software.

We all like to think that way. But your not going to build a bridge, fix a road or fund a hospital are you with your money? Also I am talking about taxes in general not specifically the US.

Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp from their devices

The messages might be end-to-end encrypted but what about the meta data? They might not have GPS coordinates but WiFi hot spots names have long been geo-located by the tech giants (its more power effient and works for devices without GPS). They cant read the messages but they should be able to tell where they are going. And If they can link the identity of a target to a whatsapp account there is a very good chance that account is talking to other potential targets.

If your goal is to target an individual and anyone they are talking to for assassination, a missile can delete a house associated with that WiFi name. Meta data and some open source intelegance is all you need.

This is the world we live in.
