13-year-old who appeared to idolize school shooters arrested, 23 guns seized in his home

The boy’s mother, who attended the court hearing, suggested in an interview afterward that the social media posts were an attempt to “be cool” among peers, KOMO-TV reported.

Obviously this is mom's attempt to undersell her child's plans, but I fully believe this has become a legit motive for young shooters. It's hard to fully articulate my theory, but it's something like: the more they rely on social media for self-esteem and validation, the less connected they feel to real-life people and events. They scroll through an endless stream of videos of humiliation, war crimes, pranks, and memes while having fewer of these experiences in real life. For some young people, their greatest achievement is to post a "deviant lick" that goes viral - a shocking inside joke that will label them a "fucking legend." Add in a heavy dose of climate doom and cynical comments like, "Younger generations are totally fucked." If someone feels like they have no future, at least they can grab a gun and blast their anger and despair at some NPCs while livestreaming for one last chance for some online attention.

Yes, it would help if guns are less accessible, but we NEED to be working on the epidemic of social isolation.

No Kings Protest, Minnesota

Reply in thread

I was there. The organizers were sending updates to anyone who RSVPed. I don't like the idea of RSVPing for something like this, but I did. They announced before the event that they had cancelled any elected officials who were planning to speak. They also said something like, "If you are told that the event is cancelled, that is just a rumor."

Several officials did speak and they were pretty epic, honestly. I don't know if they announced the cancellation as a red herring and had everyone speak as planned, or if the speakers I saw were the late replacements. IMO this was a much bigger crowd than the first Hands Off protest.

Family demands Mississippi cops be fired for arresting Black boy, 10, who allegedly peed in parking lot

Reply in thread

I was at a large outdoor music festival in 2015. On Saturday night thousands of people were lined up to use overflowing port-a-potties. Naturally, I made my way to the perimeter fence to pee. A cop came up behind me, shined his bright flashlight on me and said, "It's not worth an indecent exposure charge, man."

I was alone, in the dark, facing away from the zero people near me, and this pervert approaches me and threatens me with his pervert law. Get a fucking life.

Are egg producers inflating prices during the bird flu outbreak to boost profits?

Reply in thread

What you're saying is true in fact, but I feel like you're letting the price gougers off the hook a little. Eggs are popular because they're versatile, nutritionally dense and traditionally cheap. Eggs are almost the best breakfast kids can have before school because they help with focus and keep them full. There really isn't a replacement at the same price point. I don't think we should expect them to be so cheap that we rely on animal cruelty, but they shouldn't be a luxury item either.

EDIT: to clarify, it's the protein and fat that help with focus and fullness, not eggs specifically.

I got a set of metal picks from Harbor Freight for like 3 bucks. They're similar to the pick tool that a dental hygienist uses. I use these things nearly every day to scrape stuff out of a crevice, retrieve something out of a narrow hole, pull stuff out of a tube or straw, precision clean corners of things, etc. I love them.
