Which proprietary software do you prefer over their open-source alternatives, and why?
Steam. The support they have for multiplatform almost feels open source and they have been invaluable for the adoption of desktop Linux

Hey a fellow ex-Apollo user. Yeah I basically made an ultimatum with myself that I'd never try another Reddit app, if Apollo dies I'm gone.

South Korea has jailed a man for using AI to create sexual images of children in a first for country's courts

My guess would be he wasn't self hosting the AI network so the requests were going through a website.

Court Rules in Pornhub’s Favor in Finding Texas Age-Verification Law Violates First Amendment
As shit as this law was to ever be put to pen and paper (figuratively), silver lining is it getting struck down sets a great precedence that'll help the fight in other States that have passed similar laws.

Apartment rents are on the verge of declining due to massive new supply
Why is this article's tone written like its rooting for rents to rise?
"there should be far less supply going into 2026, giving rents a chance to make up some ground"
It almost sounds like they could be talking a stock price falling.

is PLA food safe?
Not really. Truly no printed plastic is food safe due to the pores created during the printing process. These pores can house hard to clean bacteria.
There are coatings you can use to eliminate pores that are food safe. But I’m not familiar with them so I couldn’t really point you in the right direction sorry.

TIL of RHYTHM 0 : A performance art piece in which Marina Abramović stood still for six hours while the audience could do whatever they wanted to her.
Is she what that one episode of House MD based on? There was a patient that essentially did the same art stunt that ended when a participant poured gas on her and started to light a match.

Can we get linus to discuss Lemmy/Fediverse on the WAN show?
Probably would be easy enough if someone asked an interesting question about it in a Merch Message
