Be more optimistic friend.

Government will continue to do surveillance but they can be constrained by the legal system. Corpos will build ai to sell you bullshit off whatever data they can get on you but you can block their ads and leave their platforms. Encryption is math and can’t be stopped by a law. UK law makers won’t be able to enforce their law even if it’s passed.

It’s cheaper than ever to run your own server, and will continue to get cheaper. Manage your own digital footprint and work towards decentralizing the web. Don’t worry so much about other people, they’ll come around eventually.

How do I stop being so anxious?

Working out, eating healthier, regular bedtime/sleep, reading a good book and less screen time help. Dialing down alcohol, caffeine and weed. Watching a few intro to cognitive behavioral therapy videos helps too. You’re probably ruminating. Developing the correct language to name your cognitive distortions, and being able to understand that just because you feel an emotion doesn’t mean that’s how things really happened helps.

That being said it sounds like you’re going through some rough stuff. Hang in there.

Does somone knows a good sql web interface, that i could run in a container?

Why do you want to use a web sql interface? Imo even the fancy proprietary offerings of companies like snowflake and databricks aren’t that great.

Better to use a regular database query tool like dbeaver https://dbeaver.io or datagrip https://www.jetbrains.com/datagrip/

But you can run PostgreSQL in docker https://hub.docker.com/_/postgres/. Looks like there’s a web ui tool also but never used it https://postgresqlstudio.org

Plex for books?

So not a solution you’re asking for but the remarkable e-ink tablet has a great set of apps for mobile devices and computers. It hosts your books in the cloud so you’ll always have access to stuff anywhere with internet. Automatically syncs across devices. Pretty slick.

What Republicans really mean when they blame 'DEI'

Reply in thread

Um no. No one should have to justify the spot in an organization based on their culture, race, sexual orientation or gender. I think your scenario illustrates how ridiculous caring intensely about cultural background is for hiring situations. Wouldn't diversity of hobbies, or college education backgrounds be just as valid? Business should be about business, not crafting the perfect society. If you're a good person and a good fit for the role then you're a good fit.

I believe diversity is a admiral goal for an organization. I just don't think DEI policies give enough benefits to the groups they want to protect to be worth the negative second order effects.

Isn't this why DEI needs to be pulled back though?

People of color and women do get their status on their own but the policy of DEI implies that they got additional assistance even if they didn't. This policy robs them of their achievements and it generates as much resentment towards protected groups as it provides protection. You can't just tell the people not to feel resentment, or you'll get republicans in office forever. We should start advocating for class based workplace assistance rather than dividing ourselves up by race and sex. You'll help out basically the same people, but you'll get class solidarity.
