I switched to Startpage a few months ago. I've personally found the search results to be better than DDG. I still use Google for shopping. Can't say I ever use the video search function, though. Never been prompted to sign in or create an account. Never downloaded an app.

Part of the problem is just how available it is. One doesn't have to make a pilgrimage to a casino anymore. Just download an app. It's advertised as a fun game to play rather than a highly addictive and crippling behavior.
