Cooking 😋

Lol my mom used to tell me she'd come home exhausted from work and wouldn't know what she was going to feed us, so she'd just put some garlic and onions in a pan to fry while she wound down and figure it out as she went. She said the smell at least made it seem like she had it all figured out, to us anyway

Andor creator Tony Gilroy ‘had to fight for’ the series’ most crushing moment

I don't hate Kathleen Kennedy or anything, she's just doing her job. In fact she's not even really a cause so much as a symptom, but fact is she was hired because her vision matches what the marketing people want: dumbed down, mass-appeal media that speaks to no one and offends no one. She has made it work before in her career, and (likely, in my opinion) loves the formula for its efficacy, not its artistic value. It's about the money, and enshittification. I'm as confused as everyone else how Andor managed to slip through the gatekeeping, but very glad for it. Maybe they'll learn that there's a market for more than just "childlike wonderment."

No really, why are groceries so expensive now?

I heard somewhere private equity firms are coming for our pets already, buying up tons of local and regional pet hospitals, dog and pet food suppliers, etc. Basically they know kids are increasingly unaffordable and so they need to capitalize on the fact more millennials are staying childless and treating their pet as their child.

TIL about “Second Screen Viewing” and that Netflix pushes writers to make scripts and dialogues simpler to keep viewers who are on their phones engaged

I'm pretty sure this is why andor flew under the radar/gets mixed reviews. Even with friends who are huge Star wars nerds like me, I get 'but it's boring!' a lot, mostly because it builds up to the climax in each three-episode arc. There isn't necessarily a huge, inexplicable 'OK time for action' scene in every episode just because. To enjoy it you need to be plugged in, absorbing the dialogue and connecting the dots scene to scene to understand how the plot got to the action and why it's important, and if you do you understand the tension buildup. Otherwise it just seems like two episodes of babbling and then some stuff happens, while you're still staring at your phone. At no point do any of the characters stop and explain what's happening before or during an important scene, it's all show-don't-tell. One of my best friends is working on his PhD, super bright guy, huge Star wars nerd. Has all the baby yoda this, clone trooper helmet that. I finally understood when we were watching something on stream once and I'm like "what's that? That noise?" It was his other screen on in the background watching a Twitch stream :( now I understand he's never not had a second screen going with a stream lmao feel like I'm taking crazy pills. We might as well pipe video of that stupid railway running coin grabber mobile game directly to the cortex of every citizen atp

What were you ahead on the curve of in hating?

Russell brand, back when he was just a homeopathic, somewhat progressive pseudo-intellectual moron. I remember specifically avoiding Get Him to the Greek bc I thought he was a creep, didn't think he'd actually be charged with SA though. His pivot to manosphere right wing bullshit doesn't get enough attention, bc of worse people like Rogan.

Wah wah, babies. Wah wah.

Okay so largely bc of lemmy's trekkie community I'm partway through my first viewing of Star Trek and enjoying it (starting with TOS ofc). And at some point the first yeoman gets replaced so I looked into it, some sexual harassment apparently she comes back later in a subsequent series. But then I thought I noticed Lt Uhura was also suddenly gone from the show. She wasn't, she was just not prominent for most of an episode, but before that it made me look into Uhura as well, hoping nothing irl made her leave the show.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that actually she HAD considered leaving the TOS for some other gig but had actually discussed with Martin Luther King Jr. prior. Turns out one of the only shows MLK Jr. allowed his children to watch was Star Trek because of the representation of an equal society, and when confronted with Nichelle Nichols' desire to leave the show he became upset. He told her 'Don't you understand for the first time we're seen as we should be seen. You don't have a black role. You have an equal role.'

"less lethal" pepper ball, so yes effectively a spicy paintball. In the video of the arrest of a mayor you actually see one of these goons knock his hopper off and fumble with it for a sec
