My guess is that you don't hook viewers, emotionally engage and capture their investment in the plot and characters by producing 8-10 episodes. Shows used to do ~24.

If I spend less time with your character while you've got my attention at the start, the connection will more quickly fade away and when it comes to season 2 I have forgotten caring.

I do like Strange New Worlds and feel that it captures the style and tone of classic 90s Star Trek, that most fans love, best. However, I think the number of whimsical episodes relative to the overall length of the season compared to the length of seasons from the 90s tips the balance too far. I haven't crunched any numbers for this comparisons, it's just vibes but even if the ratio was the same, in a shorter season I feel you need more serious episodes to maintain plot tension and character empathy.

All of the shows "going" are that length these days. That means that the best ones have to be that length and that's survivor bias I think. Just because some shows that length survive doesn't mean a majority will.

I don't listen to anything made after about 2010. I don't have these worries.

That option becomes a more remote opportunity with each passing year as stock diminishes so trying to find a long-term solution now makes sense.
