It's really straightforward to understand, there's no "third places" for kids and kids are generally undesired in US society. It used to be, even if you weren't religious, you had community because everyone in the neighborhood looked out for each other's kids.

It's a lot easier when you're not outnumbered by kids and can swap with other adults, even if it's 30 minutes to get a shower. Everyone is so isolated these days, it's much more difficult to build support like that unless you are religious or have family involvement.

I think this means employees working in DEI compliance roles. So not DEI hires, but people who are enforcing DEI.

I think a lot of the core of the Kamala base is just as out of touch as the Democratic establishment. The fact that the establishment can't understand this outcome just demonstrates their ineptitude.

People are hurting, a lot. Real wage growth has been stagnant, people are having trouble making ends meet, the wealthy are richer than ever leaving the working class with less and less.

What do the Democrats do to actually improve peoples material conditions? Absolutely nothing. The CHIPS act and IRA are great for longer term problems, but does nothing to put more food on people table. Kamala had the gall to ignore the problem all together. The economy is great, look at the stock market! And her big economic plan? Tax breaks for small businesses and your first home purchase. That's it. That's their fucking cornerstone economic policy. That's not gonna help the vast majority of people.

Then on the other hand you have trump. He tells everyone it's the brown peoples fault everything sucks, so we will get rid of them (and, by implication, your problems). It's their fault egg prices are high, just get rid of them and things will go back to the way things were. Of course the rich are the real problem, not immigrants or trans people or any other conservative boogie man, but Trump acknowledged the pain many working class Americans are under.

Now you can think to yourself, how would anyone believe that? Think about someone who's working two jobs to make ends meet, they're surrounded by Fox news, all their family is Republican. They were raised in the public education system (half the country can't read at a 6th grade level) and can't parse the details of domestic economic policy, but Trump says it's the brown peoples fault. Finally they felt seen and acknowledged. They remember the Trump stimulus checks. They remember the tax break (even if it's temporary, they won't look too closely and notice it's permeant for the rich).

You know how Democrats win? By bringing back the party of FDR and really championing the working class. Thanks to citizens united we will never see that again, but it's quite easy to understand their loss against trump. There's only one issue, and thats class conflict. Until the Democrats stop serving their corporate donors they will never win again as it's too easy for Republicans to acknowledge working class pain and scapegoat marginalized people.

Maybe a controversial take on Lemmy to defend religious people but here goes. I don't think it's fair to place the blame on these people. I think for the most part, they are doing the best they can with the skills and capacity they have. None of these people, who you are denigrating by comparing them to literal animals, are born terrible people.

So ask yourself, who is to blame. Is it the fearful, working class person to the left of you in the store? Is it your neighbor who is fearful of transgender people because they don't understand them? Or perhaps the family down the road struggling to make ends meet and don't have the capacity understand the real cause of their struggle.

Or is it the media culture that constantly instills fear and hate into them. And the church that no longer preaches godly values, but is instead filled with grifters and charlatans. The rednecks are not the cause of the US turmoil, they are not your enemy. What is the difference between a redneck and someone with a successful career? Opportunity. Care. Support. Anyone can be successful with support.

It is the capital class that seeks to sow fear, hatred, and division because thats the only way they can retain power. A united working class is an existential threat to their existence. The "dumb rednecks" are vulnerable and hurting and they have been exploited. Place your hate where it is deserved, the ultra wealthy, who for decades have been allowed outsized influence to manipulate the people of the US.

This is the real answer. I forget the exact numbers, but the vast majority of people on reddit are just lurkers. When you have an enormous user base, that still translates to lots of content to consume. Lemmy has way less content and very small communities (if any) for most niches.

Of course you can point to bots on reddit inflating those numbers and that Lemmy has more meaningful interaction, but that's not what most are looking for that are on reddit.

Also, as others mentioned, there's no negative engagement algorithm drivers on mastodon like there is on Twitter. Fact is, a lot of people just like to be angry and combative.

This is just straight up fear mongering. Say what you will about the economics, but the idea that there's no safe amount of radiation is ridiculous (we don't know, but presumably it's okay in some amounts since you're getting radiation doses every day even not living near anything nuclear).

The idea that NPPs are some unsafe technology just waiting to explode is dramatic and untrue.

The challenge is that AI for a video game (even one fixed game) is very problem specific and there's no generalized approach/kit for developing AI for games. So while there's research showing AI can play games, it's involved lots of iteration and AI expertise. Thats obviously a large barrier for any video game and that doesn't even touch the compute requirements.

There's also the problem of making AI players fun. Too easy and they're boring, too hard and they're frustrating. Expert level AI can perform at expert level, which wouldn't be fun for the average player. Striking the right difficulty balance isn't easy or obvious.

If you're not paying for a service, then you're the product. I never understood the expectation that people should just provide you email and storage for free, because?

Definitely seems the prevailing attitude on Lemmy, at this point if people said they WERE having kids I'd be more surprised.

This is the real issue. Companies/shareholders won't accept stable profits, so they will do anything possible to increase profits. AD-free subscriptions will be a thing of the past in the next 10 years and we will be right back to cable. Bundled subscriptions with cancellation terms and ads.

I also need to also underscore that the vast majority of profits are NOT going to the people who actually create the content, so these increases are just lining the pockets of shareholders and executives.

Wouldn't surprise me either. Just understand that my point wasn't that we should go back to the regressive social ideas of that era, but more so that we should return to supporting/expanding the welfare state at the expense of reducing the wealth of billionaires.

This drives me crazy every time I see it so I'm glad to see others recognizing this. Yes game production has gone up, but the market has massively increased. Your costs are fixed; doesn't matter if you sell 10,000 copies or 10,000,000. More people are gaming than ever so when I see all these attempts to squeeze more money from consumers to address rising costs I have no sympathy for the publisher.

This is a lot worse look than Andy saying something on Twitter. It's one thing for a board member to express an opinion as an individual, it's another to have an explicit corporate position... I don't even think the usual big tech suspects are this stupid to publicly support an administration like this.

That's a limitation of the secondary power conversion side and is true for any power generation methodology that relies on steam generation. That said, there's alternatives to the traditional Rankine cycle that could be deployed without modifying the nuclear side of the plant.

I would agree with this, I use Nvidia cards for professional work on Linux and I've never had a problem. Yeah there's some upfront work configuring the drivers, but I've never had it take more than an hour to setup.

I think they were even instructed to be "quiet". And they all just fucking fell in line.
