Researchers confirm cause of Earth’s biggest mass extinction

Reply in thread

“The bad news is, we are on track for Permian-Triassic levels of warming in worst-case scenario projections,” said Sperling. Temperatures increased 8-12 degrees Celsius over thousands of years to cause the Great Dying, and today, over just 100-200 years, temperatures are projected to be 1.5-4 degrees Celsius warmer than preindustrial times by 2100. “But the good news is, we’re still at the point where we can change things and do something about it.”

8° over thousands of years killed almost everything in the ocean. 6 degrees in a couple of hundred is likely on our current trajectory. That doesn't give much time for evolutionary fixes for the ocean animals

I can't see us throttling the fossil fuel companies, and I'm not at all hopeful of any carbon drawdown technology more complex than trees will happen, and I don't think we can plant anywhere near enough trees in places they can grow, and replant those that are burnt down

I think Kim Stanley Robinson has it right in his sci fi that all the coastal cities are screwed in a hundred years or so and presuming we don't fuck the biosphere in general enough to wipe out civilisation we'll be dredging sand just offshore from the old beaches to build new ones

I don't live in the UK or Europe but I wonder if the land rise (the rebound from the last glaciation) can keep up with sea level for long. The 10m rise from the west Antarctic ice sheet failing would have certainly outrun it, being described as like a tide that keeps coming in (look up 10m in a flood map to see how bad that would be for an overnight change!) but that's off the table. The Antarctic isn't melting like the Arctic. At least not yet.

I almost hope for life extension so I can see the disaster, but it'll suck.

When you started your 'forever world'...

It's a random world, no mods initially, now it's shaders, inventory handlers

Hard difficulty, no rule changes.

I started it some time in 2015. Spawn is on an island, from one end of the island you can listen to the local ocean monument's guardians killing squid. I trim the world's chunks outside the local area before updates

I started a hardcore world at the same time, and that game is now really hard to lose, with 1.16 god armour

This is the homebrewing machine I use for beer making: https://morebeer.com/products/brewzilla-grain-brewing-system-gen-41-integrated-pump-includes-wort-chiller-wifi-bluetooth-rapt-65l-171g-220v?_pos=2&_psq=brewzilla&_psid=a03555714&_ss=e

Though I use the 240V version. A 24L extension increases it to ~90L

It has a circulating pump that moves hot water from the bottom near the elements to the top which is useful in beer making.

The next size up is 100L with the same features, but it isn't listed on the American supplier's store: https://kegland.com.au/products/brewzilla-100l-gen-4?_pos=5&_psq=Brewzilla&_psid=6c42baf96&_ss=e

Both of these have parts available to turn them into stills.

These are PID temperature controlled, so could be used to sous vide an entire sheep

Finally a good use for horoscopes

You don't need an excuse. If you're at a party and no longer want to be there, say "I have to go now, thanks for the great party" to the host and leave

No one cares why you're leaving. I'm probably well on the neurotypical end of the spectrum and I'm usually there first in my friend group to leave a party just because parties are late and I wake early. No one complains unless I'm their lift home and they don't want to leave yet

Minecraft 1.0 comes out

Reply in thread

That's what I expected, but no. Greentext tells an old story

It didn't hurt me but fuck Microsoft. How hard would it be to keep the migration system running? 3 years is nothing for this sort of game, loads of people had the game as kids and stopped playing during several years of higher education only to find they've lost their name

My main name is this one (psud) which I've had from before Minecraft 1.0 and I was happy to get it when I got Minecraft in 2011. I would be so sore if I had to use my 10 letter name (which I pulled psud out of) or something with numbers just because a corp gave a short deadline
