Proton Ditches Mastodon

Reply in thread

I am Swiss myself and I feel like things are changing since Trumps second term, at least my friends seek closer ties to Europe now.

Proton gives me a bad feeling in the stomach, I would encourage people to not trust it. The guy is either a big Trump fan or most of his customers are from that base. The best option for e-mail is selfhost + pgp, the second best option are the various small companies offering email all across Europe.

Is starting massively pirating things the right thing to do?

In my opinion, if you want to have a real impact, it is probably more effective if you buy European things instead. My arguments are:

  1. American movies and music also push the American narrative onto Europe and acts as propaganda
  2. If you pirate stuff like Windows, you will automatically subject to American control - since they decide what software you can run on their operating system and what stuff you see in the Microsoft store. Therefore I would claim it is better to switch to Linux in that case. This is true at least in some way for a lot of software, including Office365, Apple stuff etc.
  3. If you buy European things you directly support European companies, which then have more money to create new products and they get better chances in raising money from investors as well.

Mozilla under fire for Firefox AI "bloat" that blows up CPU and drains battery

Reply in thread

Well this is obviously personal to some degree, but for me it would be to fix bugs, don't crash, dont make me restart after an update and lose my incognito tabs, focus on being w3c compliant, block ads, maybe allow blocking annoying cookie banners and maybe allow good keyboard navigation. I like some features other browsers have, such as integrated tor browsing - but since I am not a big fan of bloat, I'm not sure whether that should be handled outside of the browser

I learned a bit of rust and I think it's just about getting used to it. It's fairly subjective, and people say the same about C++. I also prefer the C syntax because I find it's simplicity extremely elegant and prefer it to have fewer features. And I like it for it's consistency, on linux the FHS is based up on C, and it just somewhat feels ugly to break that consistency.

But I also acknowledge the advantages of rust.
