Feature: Topic Fly Out
So I was just thinking, the way I look at PieFed is that I like to have the main site up, when I find an article I'm interested in I center wheel click it to open it in a new window and then keep going to find other articles. I then go look at all of the articles one at a time and then come back to the main website.
My thought is, what if hovering over the topic, or clicking it, caused a fly out. So the page splits and shows the article on the side or in a box hovering over the topic. A lot of times I just like to see the comments really and if I want the article then I just click through. But most times it's just to get a summary or make a quick comment. Think email client. Show the topics on the left and then clicking it opens the topic on the right.
Just a thought.
Like this? https://piefed.social/c/piefed_meta/p/2072361/browsing-piefed-using-vivaldi-s-follower-tab-feature-is-very-nice
Yup. But that's at the browser level and depends on folks knowing it's there and how to use it. Any chance to build something like that into piefed natively? If it's not possible out something you're not interested in I completely understand. Just thought it'd be an easy way to see the content quickly that you're interested in.
I like the idea, a lot.
But the way it works now is really easy to make it work on both a mobile and a desktop - just squish sideways and move the sidebar to the bottom. Anything more interesting would require quite a bit of skill and more maintenance work to upkeep.
I expect that the projects that are completely focused on the frontend (the ones trying to do all screen sizes like Blorp or Photon, not the mobile apps) will have more capacity and interest to take something like this on. The PieFed project has a ton of things besides UI to deal with so leaning too heavily into that area would come at the expense of others, which we can't afford to do.
Totally understand. Thank you for the time and consideration sir. And thank you for all the amazing work already done and any you will do. This is a phenomenal thing you've created. I adore it and greatly appreciate you. :-)
Thank you :D
I wonder if this could be done with CSS?
Firefox kind of does this with Split View
Yeah, Zen does this. Zen is a Firefox fork. It's nice. I should look and see if there's a keyboard shortcut to open a link in split screen.
Middle click -> ctrl+alt+v -> to close the split, click in the second panel (the one you want to close) -> ctrl+w
Keybinds can be changed in settings
MILLION upvotes for this! This is excellent! Thank you so much for the suggestion! That's awesome. I have a split keyboard, so definitely going to change that in settings, but SUPER cool! Thank you SO MUCH! :)
Actually just created a macro instead on my keebio keyboard! :D So cool! TY! Now just need to figure out if I can move around with the keyboard between those.
ctrl+TAB ?
lol that does work! Thank you! :)
