I can’t for the life of me figure out why his gf would cheat on him. He sounds like such an honorable fellow.

xkcd #2899: Goodhart's Law
I’d not heard of this before, but this explains a lot of why my call center jobs were such BS.
We were expected to resolve networking, MS Exchange and VoIP issues in 20 minutes or less on average, which just resulted in a lot more customers having to call back because all the agents had to try and rush to a solution without time to test.

People are getting fed up with all the useless tech in their cars — For the first time in 28 years of JD Power’s car owner survey, there is a consecutive year-over-year decline in satisfaction, wit...
I have been saying this for years. The last thing your car should do is take your eyes off the road. This is a 1-3 ton box of metal hurdling at 60+ miles down the highway next to a bunch of other metal boxes that can all kill each other.
And car manufacturers seem to be in love with the idea of you forgetting you’re even driving. Add on all the bs lane assisting, warning bells, alerts, automatic correction, and the driver is convinced that the car will protect them.
These are all systems built on software. Last time I checked, that shit has never been reliable. If the software fails, the manufacturer can just hide behind “They weren’t paying attention!”
Mfer, YOU TRAINED THEM TO IGNORE IT. I don’t know what I’m going to do when all the cars from before touchscreens and digital gauges are no longer running or affordable because I hate the idea of having to look at a screen to change volume or turn on the AC.
Modern cars can suck a fuck.

It Sucks to Be 33--Millenials born in 1990-91 have objectively had to compete harder for everything
As a 31-year-old, I thankfully missed the window and have had it super easy this whole time.

I speak from experience that no one other than professionals should be handling their own mail servers in 2024. I worked for a mail host. The amount of spam and attacks that befall a mail provider, even a small one, is bonkers. Plus, mail is just too damn important.
I wish it wasn’t the case because the idea of everyone privately hosting their own mail servers would be pretty awesome. Sadly the modern internet makes it way too risky.

If someone says their favorite tv show/movie is any of the ones pictured here, the next question should always be “Why?”

Has anyone tried pitching high speed rail to the 65+ crowd like this before?
This would have been so useful for Eddy

How are engine sounds in racing games played ?
Most older games will have 2-3 engine loops that they will blend between and pitch accordingly, however Forza 5 specifically was the first in the series to use granular synthesis which is a much more modern approach.
These will have a series of sound files including all the different parts of the engine, exhaust, turbo, etc. Then the software slices these files into tons of pieces in real-time and plays the slices based on the players inputs.
It’s tricky to explain without examples, so here’s a video that does a decent job of explaining how it works in music: https://youtu.be/ftDLRYnRYZQ?si=SEHOl55K7rimi4Eu

To be honest, it is quite complicated now as well with all of the proprietary software

Don’t forget about the hidden ProgramData directory at the root of the file system. Ableton Live likes to install there for some ungodly reason.

Starfield hating "games journalists" have reached a new level.
I just don’t understand what people were expecting. I expected Skyrim in Space and got that. Expecting a true space sim on top of that? That’s an entirely different ask. I’ve got E:D and NMS if I want to spend hours hopping from one system to the next and deal with space physics. But if I want a story, Starfield is delivering for me.

Why is Windows 11 so annoying?
You also generally do not have to download a bunch of drivers or spend six hours in the command line hand-assembling the goddamn operating system.
It’s sad that this is still the perspective people have on Linux in a lot of places. This describes a small handful of distros that are often the choice for those that know what they’re getting into.

Google Cloud explains how it accidentally deleted a customer account
I think about how many times things like this happen to individuals that don’t have the weight to warrant an article where their entire collection of online data just gets wiped out and Google responds with: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Don’t trust your data to the cloud, folks.

Guys, it looks like nvidia has another faithful fan...
I feel like I’m from an alien planet. I’ve been using nVidia cards exclusively since around 2014 and while I’ve certainly not had a perfect track record, 90% of the time, I’ve been pretty plug-and-play. Maybe I’ve been lucky or maybe it’s because I stick to the popular distros.
In either case, from the perspective of openness, I do agree with the community that drivers shouldn’t be shrouded in mystery.

If I never write about video games ever again, let this be my final plea | Rock Paper Shotgun
I have a fun time with the Rockstar Launcher for RDR2. It’s a 50/50 chance it will actually launch properly. The other half of the time, it tells me I don’t have access rights to the game.
Thanks, DRM!

This quote from Banksy is pretty much my take on advertising:
People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.
You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.
Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.
You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.
It’s not enough to just block them on your own computer. Ads are literally everywhere and pretty much inescapable unless you’re a forest hermit living on the land.
