  1. Non-Westerner that never have or realized alternative platform exist.
  2. Artist that dependant on mainstream social media reach. (some artists already have 100K+ followers there, fedi also have limited reach due to instance blocking, e.g. you're on Mastodon.art and want to reach Japanese audience (mainly misskey.io, but t was defederated on most of Western instance.)
  3. People with social network bubble outside Westernsphere, they only have exclusively local feed on their Twitter.
  4. People outside Westernsphere that already tried fediverse, but moving back as fediverse is still Western-centric or does not have their own community on feidverse.
  5. Community that does not have monetary power to invest on their own fedi instance.

No. Importance of UX simply means advance users can customize their workflow while making it easy to use for casual users.

Kinda like Krita or Blender. Both are not perfect, but the dev are working on it, together with the community.

Even GIMP dev also working on that, they have GIMP UX issue tracker here: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/GIMP/Design/gimp-ux/

"your program should look and behave exactly like this other program made by a corpo, because I've learned that one already"

Oftentimes established workflow is already simple. There's no need to reinvent this from scratch. Example: Npainter and AzPainter are heavily inspired by PaintToolSAI. Inochi Creator is a clone (with unique feature) of Live2D Cubism.

PewDiePie has switched to Linux

Just a reminder for people here: People can change and do better.

A lot of his old content are basically edgy, toxic, and too much. He basically did racist joke towards various groups of people, just for the sake of anger them. Even a lot of his fans also often recognizing those mistake and asked him to do better.

He's now a husband and a father. He's not doing any these joke anymore. He already recognizing his past mistake and do much better these days.

All of his content is now simple wholesome and even inspiring. His several drawing content is actually often being shared among art community.

Let's celebrate when people recognize their mistake and doing things better!

EDIT: I recommend to watch his video: I Drew Every Day for 100 DAYS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJDtQTTAogk which highly regarding on art community for its art journey. Even a lot of illustrator, both professional and hobbyist started reacting to it.

Wrong.

"GIMP is a cross-platform image editor ... Whether you are a graphic designer, photographer, illustrator, or scientist, GIMP provides you with sophisticated tools to get your job done." - gimp.org

Shape tools is a universal basic tool for any software that handle some sort of image creation or addition.

Photo editing, general image editing, painting software, page layout design, vector design, PDF editor, all of them have one.

Photoshop, Microsoft Paint, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, Photopea, Pixelmator, Affinity Photo, ... all of them have shape tools.

Heck, even Microsoft Excel and Word even have one.

EDIT: Shape tool is planned, not yet WIP. Source: GIMP Roadmaps

Linux gamers on Steam finally cross over the 3% mark

What makes the chart "only" on 3% is Chinese users. English Linux user alone has more than 6% percentage of Linux users.

We need Chinese government for their independent tech stack to include Linux further. At the moment, there are already several Chinese distro with big companies porting their basic apps to Linux (like chat app, office app, etc).

If Chinese gov force gaming company to support Linux as well, we will see a huge surge evenmore. There are a huge number of Chinese game that never made out of China, and exclusive to PC only.

What are some examples of original fediverse software, not emulating existing platforms?

Misskey. It's second most used software in fediverse. Used in misskey.io, which has 10 thousands daily active user (possibly 100K-200K MAU).

Developed since 2014. Originally function as self-hosted microblogging, now turns into unique social media. For example:

  • Misskey-flavoured Markdown, example
  • social games (only two so far: Reversi and Bubble Game)
  • emoji reaction like Discord (they're the first one to implement it on fediverse)
  • Antennas (tracking post with any keyword)
  • Pages
  • Channels (groups)
  • Clips (bookmark with multiple groups, kinda like Facebook bookmarks)
  • Achievement
  • optional ads banner (just in case the server admin wants to do community ads, usually used for indie games, comics, vtuber, or IRL art event)

Their community is mainly Japanese, they desperately need English contributor and community to help them grow.

What’s the difference between Mastodon, Bluesky, and Misskey?

Adding random information regarding Misskey. Misskey is specifically created to tackle Japanese internet culture and its own interpretation of fediverse.

For example, Misskey software allow the instance owner to run ads (usually community ads like promoting indie games, open for art illustration, or vtuber) while Western-made fediverse software are anti-ads.

Misskey also allows a lot of fun feature like social games, blogs, groups, emoji reaction, Misskey-flavored Markdown (people are getting wild with it).

It also have drive, which allow user to reuse existing uploaded image without using additional server storage.

Also, fun achievements!

NeoDB is committed to creating a free, open, and interconnected space for collecting and reviewing books, movies, music, games, and podcasts.

Just for unique info:

NeoDB is primarily a Bangumi-clone. Bangumi (https://bangumi.tv/) is Chinese multimedia tracker, with five categorization: animation, comics, games, music, and live action.

Their community is really dedicated to maintain the most correct information, even having unique metadata that English database does not have them, like manga magazine serialization with exact volume and date.

Edit: In the future, fediverse should have solution for universal metadata sharing for media database. Avoiding potential clashes and empower user to choose their preference (which most of mainstream DB simply does not)

For example, Japanese romanization system. Right now, there's two competing used in English database. IMDB, IGDB etc use Hepburn-romanization MyAnimeList, MangaUpdates, VNDB use system inspired by Nihon-shiki. Both format should be supported to avoid clash. Language display for multi-region system should be implemented as well. e.g.:

  • English Asia user might want to see Detective Conan as official title
  • English North America user might want to see Case Closed as official title.

I believe when majority of people saying "Photoshop has this, we should do this as well" are not actually saying GIMP should create a total carbon-copy.

People loves easy to use interface, not carbon copy of Photoshop, even if they don't say that. They just don't know how to articulate their frustration better.

When Affinity Photo emerges as actual Photoshop alternative, no one complains regarding "not being Photoshop clone" because the interface is actually easier than Photoshop, while still being advanced software.

New GIMP user complaining about interface "not being Photoshop clone" is indicator that GIMP interface is not easy to use and intuitive enough.

Amazon also owns IGDB (game database), Goodreads (books), and so on. For music data, they just support MusicBrainz which is open source, open license, and independent database. MusicBrainz have pilot project for books database, but it's not as good as Goodreads or other DB yet.

PewDiePie: I'm DONE with Google

Reply in thread

He got backlash from his own fans from all edgy and toxic jokes. I remember some of his Indian fans are angry for his PewDiePie vs T-series stuff (T-series: Indian music company).

I think around 2019, he apologized and recognized all the edginess he did, and promised to do better.

For the last five years, all of his content are basically wholesome family stuff or creative activities. Even his recent art journey video are widely shared among young art communities that's not even his fans.

What's a niche fediverse software you like?

Misskey. It's not exactly niche, but it has a lot of cool features.

For example:

  • Drive features to reuse your image or other media.
  • Misskey games, so far only have Bubble Game and Go.
  • Groups
  • Antenna, basically subscription for any post with your set of rules.
  • Playful profile decoration, similiar to Discord/Steam.

Why is Mastodon struggling to survive?

I agree with top comment.

I'm Indonesian. Most of trending fediverse are Western related topics which It's not relevant to me.

There's one time when I randomly post about my country politics, and people on Mastodon just assume or comment using Western mindset.

Other than this Lemmy account, I mostly stick with hobby-related fediverse that mostly East Asian and Southeast Asian people (mostly Misskey instance)

Also, Indonesian is currently the highest user on Twitter, recently bypassed Brazil. People still use it as our local feed is... well localized. No Western-related discussion and much more comfy.
