Chat Control 2.0 has passed the first round of approval
"outlaws anonymous communication" - This sends chills down me more than anything else I can remember. The people and organisations that benefit from this can't be trusted.
The only thing this does is control the law abiding public. Criminals are already breaking the law, and won't care. It is trivial to build an anonymous communication app. There will always be a workaround.
Anonymity, and free speak should be human rights.

Found this when looking for a meme I lost
Reply in thread
When you Google a technical thing you could use the whole sentence like "in a bash session how would you pipe the output from cat to something else?" But that is long winded and can be constraining for the search engine so you boil it down to just the essential words". Start with "how to" then add "bash Cat pipe", and insert "with" because that is the desired adjective.
I've just woken up and I'm wondering if I missed an implied /s. Anyway.

Developer patches Wine to make Photoshop 2021 & 2025 run on Linux — Adobe Creative Cloud installers finally work thanks to HTML, JavaScript and XML fixes
Until Adobe patch's the installer and licencing server to prevent it from working at all. (Too cynical?)

The Best Password Managers in 2023
Bitwarden - does everything, and is free. You can even setup a shared vault so 2 people can have access to shared stuff like online shopping and streaming sites. Takes a bit of admin work but it is not hard.

The growing controversy over Israel’s Eurovision song entry
Call me cynical, but I reckon they fully expect to get booted from the show and are intentionally milking the situation for propaganda purposes back home.

Straight men, what's the weirdest thing you've been told you can't do because it's gay?
Reply in thread
I usually play as a female character in 3rd person games because I prefer to look at a woman's butt rather than a man's. Seems like the opposite of gay to me, but apparently not.

Microsoft's latest Windows update breaks VPNs, and there's no fix
This seems like bullshit to me. I've not seen anyone complaining their VPN isn't working. And any business with staff using VPNs would not be happy if they managed to let that update get applied.

What’s a graphical piece of software you wish existed or was better?
GUI for Pipewire configuration. Being able to reliably change the sample rate and buffer size without having to mess with config files would be nice.

EU push for open source, GIMP3 is out, Firefox gets webapps back_ Linux & Open Source News
For me the EU should make all hardware manufacturers provide open source drivers with the full range of configuration options available. This is one of the biggest hurdles to moving away from Windows.

DAW software for Linux?
Reaper is definitely the way to go. While it is not FOSS I feel it has the spirit of Linux. It is extremely customisable and flexible and it has all the features you expect from a good DAW.
The real issue is finding instrument and effect plugins that work on Linux. The popular ones are all windows or Mac only because they depend on DRM control software that doesn't work on Linux.

[Serious] What's your hot take?
Places of religious worship and formal teaching (e.g. churches, and Sunday schools) should be treated like bars and porn. You need to be an adult to access bars and porn because children do not fully understand what is happening or the consequences of being there. Churches (etc) are the same and there should be a legal age limit.
It should also be socially unacceptable to talk about religious opinions in front of kids, just like most people don't swear or talk dirty, etc.
I agree with schools teaching kids "about" religions, just like sex and drugs. Teaching facts is good, preaching (aka indoctrination) is not.

I switched from Windows 10 to Linux. Its great!
I'm on the yearly trip to linux land. The one thing that bothers me is hardware support, specifically configuration of hardware devices. My external audio device (Focusrite 2i2) works fine but there is no easy to change the bit rate etc without messing with core config files. This is the sort of thing that should be in the GUI already. My PS5 controller works as well but I can't make it automatically go to sleep after 5 mins. Also HDR support is still missing.
That said, so far I'm finding ways to do what I need, but it is clear Linux still has much to improve if it hopes to attract more windows users.

What Linux distro surprised you the most?
Endeavour OS
I've tried all the usual distros many times over the years but never an arch based distro until last year. I gave arch a go first and it was great but then tried endeavouros and it came with the fixes I needed and was more instantly good from the first boot. The AUR and arch wiki stuff just makes the whole experience most (sry to use this term) Windows like in terms of fixes and support.

Is anyone planning on forking Plasma to restore X11 support when it is dropped?
Wayland development continues to push forward. Currently it works better than X11 in 95% or setups, and it won't be long before it covers 99.5%. X11 is legacy now, and Wayland works perfectly for the vast majority of users and is only improving. The time to move on is coming.
For legacy use cases there will be an alternative X11 DE you can use for a long time yet.

Preach.
Until we have physical, undeniable evidence it is all just words. But, the reason I talk out load when I'm alone is for the aliens who might be watching me. I want them to hear my explanations for why I'm worth visiting personally / why I'm reading memes and not building a star gate out a 7 toasters and a mountain bike.
