PhotoGIMP - The Photoshop Like Experience on GIMP

Reply in thread

This is just wrong. I love foss and the effort put into gimp, but there are so many little ux things that it gets wrong.

The big one for me is non destructive resizing of pasted objects. Photoshop puts the little drag handles on them allowing for resizing, the top middle one allows you to rotate, holding the shift key locks proportions etc, all right away after pasting.

On gimp you can open a menu and specify the height and width, or you can click shift + s, which kind of works like Photoshops but is somehow clunkier & destructive when shrinking.

I also really miss smart objects and the universal tool options menu (not sure what it's called but it lives on the top of the canvas on PS and gives you all the relevant options for whatever tool you are using. I'm sure gimp has an equivalent but out of the box I find it much more correct and confusing.

A review on A Court of Thorns and Roses

Reply in thread

As someone who likes the genre I'm just really happy there's so much content being made. Yea some of it is slop trying to recapture the fad of ACOTAR (the book pictured), but some of the stuff coming out of it is really good. Also, because of this, there's more romance in a lot of genres that didn't have much before (looking at you sci-fi).

Personally, I love love and reading romance brings me joy. Some of these books are cringy teen angst with unrealistic and toxic relationships (mainly the YA side), but I've found that most I've picked up have healthy relationships with interesting plots that don't revolve around just the romance.

That said, pure romance books (the pastel section of the store) have burned me too many times for me to bother trying anymore. Almost everything that this post complains about but 1000%.

Ngl, this post reminds me of the backlash that seems to follow anything coded for women that becomes really popular.

What skill did you learn that was not worth the effort?

Reply in thread

I'm a big believer that computation should be a skill we learn in school. I think a lot of normal people would benefit from being able to make some simple scripts in python for personal use or even just for fun. I hope you don't always think that the coding skills are useless <3. That said I agree the networking stuff you can throw out the window! I know enough to know that I will never fully understand how network topology works. Every time I get to the /24 or whatever that's called my eyes start rolling.

With how layered the irony is in this community it took this piece of hate and the reaction to it for me to get rid of the nagging fear that this community is actually Nazis or something like that.
