Is your cultural enlightenment worth the destruction of the environment and half the population living in poverty?

There's 8 billion people on earth, if even half that number traveled the environment would be toast. The only reason we're alive right now is because 4 billion people are living in abject poverty.
Sustainable travel doesn't stop invasive species from tagging along, besides the fact, nothing an industrial population of 8 billion people do can truly be called sustainable.
Sure travel is good in some ways, but is it worth the cost of being an exclusive club that destroys the planet?

Travel is actually bad. Sure it allows some subset of wealthy people to "become more cultured" and use it as a status symbol but that's because it's inherently exclusive. There's 8 billion people on earth, we can't all get on planes and experience different cultures. Is it good to promote something as important to a life experience that's only available to wealthier people?
If a person needs a plane ride to experience other cultures to no be an asshole, I suspect that they'll be an asshole either way.
Allowing species to move into new areas and damage ecosystems is one of many problems with travel (not just planes either).
I did some traveling, I loved it, but was it worth the damage and pollution? I don't think so.

Dolly Parton, country music icon, dies at 80
Reply in thread
Dolly is one of the few people you can say this about in her eulogy and it wouldn't even be disrespectful.
Dolly was a real one, as someone who doesn't usually care about celebrity deaths, or country music, this made me sad, she will be missed.
Here's a little story: In my garage growing up we had a metal can (idk if it was like a bedroom trash can or what) that had Dolly on it. I'm guessing it caused me to have a dream that I thought was real until I was about 10 years old. I had a memory of pulling up to Dolly's house (which in my false memory was like a 3-bedroom in southern California a few blocks from my house) with my Mom and her and my mom had a conversation sitting in Dolly's living room as I played on the floor with toys. I must've been about 10 before it clicked into my head that there was no way my mom was buddies with Dolly Parton and that she lived just around the way lol. But I grew up thinking she was a family friend. In a way, she was.

in-groups and out-groups
There are 2 types of people, those who think might makes right and those who think consent makes right. The might-makes-right type form rigid hiearchies and well defined in-groups and the group leaders are always working to shrink the group and demonstrate status.

Nothing sinister, we just don't delete what we say we delete. Instead we keep it in your profile to feed the algorithms and set the "deleted" flag to make you think it's gone.

I mean, they're on FB, so ya, they probably thought something like that, if their thoughts even went beyond the words themselves.
It's like imagining what a lizard thinks about you, it's easy and fun to project your intelligence on it, this is what you're doing here. You're projecting your intelligence and logic on others apparently without that capacity. Those FB people didn't think about what their words meant any more than a lizard wonders about your nature.

Asking the important questions
I'd consider from the other direction. If I constantly farted all day, and I had the option of concentrating 99% of those farts into once daily solid waste deposit, I'd be quite excited about the potential of my future social life.

Oh no, Anarchists!
Anti-anarchist pretty much think
This is heavily promoted by mainstream media and language
Many people seem unable to comprehend how a community might defend itself without a standing military and so assume we must be unwilling to defend ourselves.
Because most of us have grown up within strict hierarchies coerced to do things we don't want, we have trouble imagining any other way.
This is probably projection in most cases

How working for Big Tech lost 'dream job' status
They lost dream job status for me when I realized I was facilitating some evil shit. Like "oh! great job in genomics! I can help cure cancer!" Then realize it's "oh, help China build population scale genomic sequencing, wonder what they're gonna do with that?"
And "oh, edge computing, sounds cool", then realizing "oh, edge computing is mostly useful for facial recognition, wonder what people will use that for?"

Vinyl records outsell CDs for the second year running
Reply in thread
Technically CD quality digital is superior, but the recording and mixing can have a lot to do with it. For example, it could be that an decades old Dark Side Of The Moon on vinyl (played on proper equipment) could sound better than a modern remastered CD with maximized loudness (See the "loudness wars").

Sounds like the perspective of a privileged person who's life hasn't been in danger for years because of this person. Why is it bad to celebrate the misfortune of a person who has caused massive harm and is promising to eradicate your kind?
