Trump says some undocumented immigrants are ‘not people’
Former president Donald Trump ratcheted up his dehumanizing rhetoric against immigrants Saturday by saying that some who are accused of crimes are “not people.”
“I don’t know if you call them people,” he said at a rally near Dayton, Ohio. “In some cases they’re not people, in my opinion. But I’m not allowed to say that because the radical left says that’s a terrible thing to say.”
Apparently I’m part of the radical left, because yes that is a terrible thing to say.

Trump wrote to-do lists for assistant on White House documents marked classified
This is so beyond indefensible that I have no words.
A failure to hold Trump accountable for his many flagrant violations of national security laws would be a complete failure of justice.

Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher will resign early, leaving House majority hanging by a thread
Gallagher’s decision to leave April 19 also means that there will not be a special election to fill his seat. Under Wisconsin state law, vacancies after the second Tuesday in April are filled in the general election, so Gallagher’s replacement will be decided in November and his seat will remain empty until January.
If he resigns just a week earlier his seat would likely be filled by another republican. Credit where credit is due, this is an intentional move on his part to express dissatisfaction with house republicans.

House Passes Johnson’s Plan to Avert Shutdown in Bipartisan Vote
The vote was 336 to 95, clearing the two-thirds threshold required for passage. In the end, 209 Democrats and 127 Republicans joined to pass the bill. Ninety-three Republicans opposed it, as did two Democrats.
While this is technically bipartisan, a majority of the votes are from Democrats. Once again it’s up to congressional Democrats to save the GOP from itself (not to mention America from the GOP) and keep the government functioning.

Trump to sign executive orders proclaiming there are only two biological sexes, halting diversity programs
Reply in thread
Fascists need an “other” to demonize. They delight in the cruelty towards the “other”. The executive order gives them a sense of accomplishment, further strengthening the group bonds as they enjoy the suffering of the “other” together.
It really is as simple as “the cruelty is the point”. It helps them because they desire to inflict cruelty, and this gives them a method for doing so.

Rolling Stone Lawsuit Forces Release of Henry Kissinger's FBI Files
Rolling Stone’s Freedom of Information Act request, filed hours after the announcement of his death in November 2023, seeks expedited processing of FBI files related to the former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor to President Nixon.
If this were anyone else I’d criticize Rolling Stone for acting like hungry vultures. But it’s Henry “War Criminal like ten times over” Kissinger. Have at him.

No, actually Trump WON the debate. Because he lied about pets getting eaten. Masterful strategy.
“directionally correct” is a fun euphemism for “false, unless you assume some insane slippery slope argument”.

Trial begins in alleged ‘Trump Train’ ambush of Biden-Harris bus in 2020

It’s only a civil lawsuit - these usually take time.
Note that no one has been criminally charged in this, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Trump VP hopeful Kristi Noem suggests Biden's dog Commander should also be put down
Noem appears to be targeting the “pro dog killing” portion of the electorate. Time will tell if Trump considers this more of an asset or a liability in his potential running mate.

‘What are the odds?’ California family lost one home to wildfire in 2018 — and a second in 2024
”What are the odds?”
Fairly high, apparently:
Overall, Cohasset has a extreme risk of wildfire over the next 30 years.
It sucks but people have to start taking wildfire risk into account when choosing where to live. It’s the same as considering flood risk, earthquake risk, mudslide risk, etc.

Ralph Yarl, Black Missouri teen shot in head by white man after ringing wrong doorbell, earns spot on all-state band
Reply in thread
The whole story is wild, and terrible.
He rang the doorbell shortly before 10 p.m. and waited for someone to respond, Merritt said.
“Whoever was inside took a little longer than he anticipated to respond, and so he just waited at the door,” Merritt said, citing a statement Yarl gave to law enforcement investigators from his hospital bed Friday.
“He heard rustling around going on in the house and then finally the door was open,” the attorney said. “And he was confronted by a man who told him, ‘Don’t come back around here,’ and then he immediately fired his weapon.”
Yarl was shot in the head, which cracked his skull and left him with a critical, traumatic brain injury, the attorney said. While the teenager was still on the ground, the homeowner opened fire a second time, striking Yarl in the upper right arm, Merritt said.
And then
Merritt said the teenager saved his own life by fleeing and banging on at least three neighbors’ doors for help.
At the third home, Merritt said, the neighbor told Yarl to lie on the ground and put his hands in the air. He complied and then passed out, the attorney said.

Is there a way to convert radiation from atomic decay into energy directly, the same way we do sunlight with a solar cell?
Betavoltaic devices are exactly what you’re describing. They convert beta radiation (energetic electrons) into electricity in the same way that photovoltaic cells (solar panels) convert photons into electricity. You can create a nuclear battery by putting some radioactive material that decays via beta emission in one of these.
The downside of these devices is that they generate very little power. It takes a dangerous amount of radioactive material to generate the power needed for say a phone or laptop. Commercial betavoltaic devices generate ~tens of microwatts. They’re useful if you need a low power battery somewhere that you don’t want to replace, like in a remote sensor.

US judge demoted after detaining teenage girl during field trip to courtroom
King is facing a federal lawsuit filed by Eva Goodman, 15, and her mother, Latoreya Till, after Goodman was forced to put on jail garments, handcuffed and put in an isolated holding cell during an educational trip to King’s courtroom.
The trip certainly was educational, though probably not in the way the school intended.

U.S. Govt and researchers seemingly discover new type of superconductivity in an exotic, crystal-like material — controllable variation breaks temperature records

It’s already been published. But it’s superconducting at 10 K. This is a new high temperature record, but pretty far from room temperature.

Project 2025 mastermind allegedly told colleagues he killed a dog with a shovel
Republicans have been spreading racist lies about immigrants eating dogs, meanwhile they have:
Kristi Noem: shot a puppy in a gravel pit (and then a goat to fully sate her bloodlust).
Head of project 2025: beat a dog to death with a shovel.
RFK Jr: claims to be willing to eat almost any animal “except dogs”. Given his whale and bear carcass stories, I assume it’s just a matter of time before the dog eating story drops.
